How close to house?
by BeyondTheGarden- 20 replies

I have a few queens and mules that I'd like to put in the ground, but of course they're not hardy here (mules may be marginal I guess). I'd like to plant them right up against the house to get that extra bit of protection and microclimate (still planning to box them in, in winter). I know a lot of palms can be planted up really close to the house, and they'll tip out away from the house, toward the sun as they grow. I just don't know how close I can go (I know both of these palms develop very large crowns). Thanks.

Heating idea

I probably won’t do this for the upcoming winter but when I move and plant a few long term Trachy, I’m wondering if something like this would be effective during those 24+ hour cold snaps. A large perimeter of burlap to block the wind, planted near the house with mulch for soil warmth, and this heater mounted above the palm. The crown could stay open to avoid fungal problems with top heat which would probably dry it out a bit. Trying to think like a botanist. Would it be enough during some Z6b winters?

Oregon queen palm - for real.
by Chester B- 3 replies
I was walking my dogs in the subdivision next to mine and I came across a house full of palms and exotics. To my surprise in the front yard was a pretty big queen palm. I plan on going back to talk to the owners to get some more info. They also had either another queen or mule behind the fence. No idea how long it’s been there or if it gets protected. This is in the Portland Oregon area.

Spear development and color

I haven’t noticed before when spears Start to open up but the color isn’t very green on this new spear opening up. Is it lack of chlorophyll from the sun? And will get more green as it opens, or is there something I need to address for a nutritional deficiency?

Before and After

Don’t talk much about my Needle palm but it’s really grown into a nice three larger, two smaller clump of trunks...three trunks are about 12” and the other two are smaller but it’s gone from about a 3’ high by 2’ wide in-ground experiment in 2014 to a 5x 5 picture of health today...what a fantastic cold hardy palm. Aside from a bit of protection its first winter, it’s faced every winter on its own. Surprisingly, the main trunk died a couple years after planting but the suckers prospered... First winter: Somewhere in the middle: To present: Anyway, sitting at the base of a slight slope, it gets a fair share of runoff and…

Which of these is a nicer palm and why? Cold hardiness is not a problem for me. I think I need some Sabal minors though. Hell... I guess maybe I should just buy both.

Sabal Siamese Twins at Naples Botanical Garden
by PalmatierMeg- 2 replies
This past Sunday my husband and I visited Naples Botanical Garden for our anniversary. Among the many palms we saw was this (these?) apparent twin Sabals that are joined at an extra wide trunk ~5' tall, then separated into two separate crowns. I saw no plaque identifying what species of Sabal it (they?) are or anything about them. I am not sure of the species but the sight was so unusual I took the following photos. I have seen photos of solitary Sabals that split into two crowns due to damage but they have normal solitary trunks up to the split. This palm has an extra wide trunk with a "valley" between two halves all the way up to where the crowns separate, as if two pal…

Anyone got any constructive critisism on this method or if i should do thing otherwise I love to hear from you. Side question can Bottles be wrapped up for a extended time as well?

L. chinensis
by ahosey01- 11 replies
Planted an L. chinensis today. Was in a 15G pot. We’re a weird 9A here. Freezes are short and daytime temps always warm, with low humidity and never any precipitation. No such thing as a long duration freeze here. I hear super mixed things about these palms. Some people say they’re not nearly as cold hardy as expected - others say they’re rock solid. Whats your experience? Heres a photo:

Could Rocks help me make a better microclimate?
by Palmfarmer- 3 replies
I got fairly warm temps in the daytime in winter 25c more or less but several nights in 0c. Someone on this forum once recommended i put some rocks around my Royal palm since i was told soil tempratures at night is probably the most important for growth. I am thinking if there is truth to this I could spread black lava rocks all around my yard and some bigger rocks around the palms also to hopefully be able to make some of my palms grow in winter by raising the soil temprature at night in the winter. What you guys think? Sorry for rambling

Canary Leaf Opening, Pt. 2
by ahosey01- 6 replies
A few weeks ago, I started a thread called “Canary Leaf Opening.” For 4-6 weeks after planting (from a 24” box), my new CIDP just kind of froze without growing or decaying. However, beginning a couple weeks ago, this thing has now gone on a growth rampage. It has fully opened two new fronds and half-opened a third in right around two weeks. There are also three spears inside the crown that I’m sure won’t take long to open, either. Just how fast do these things grow?!

Sabal etonia Slug
by ahosey01- 1 follower

I have a small Sabal etonia purchased from Jungle Music as a liner. This thing is a slug. It had 3 tiny strap leaves when I first planted it. It now has 5 strap leaves nearly 10 months later. It looks great - it has a deep, green color, has no issues with the desert sun or heat, receives plenty of water and is in a good, well-draining soil. For what it's worth, near as I can tell, it's happy as a clam. Just not moving one bit! Am I going to be 63 by the time this thing is an adult?!

When to plant Washy Filifera in zone 7b?
by knikfar- 5 replies
I just recieved four baby Washy Filifera's. Each is between 5 and 6 inches tall. I know this is going to be a palm that requires protection in my zone but I'm wondering when I should plant them? I have lots of sabal palms about the same size that I planted last year and they sailed through the winter, completely unprotected with no damage at all. I've also read some of these trunking palms are hardier when small because they're focussing on establishing their roots vs gaining height where they'll be more exposed. At the moment, I have them potted and I'm thinking I'll keep them this way over the winter and plant them in late February, when all danger of temps in the teens…
