Windmill palm stopped growing

I have a trachycarpus Nova planted near two others of the same variety, all planted at the same time, coming up on two years ago. While two of the palms have grow fairly steadily, one of them has slowed to almost no movement at all. I think it might have pushed out a single frond all summer. It has healthy looking spears coming up but those have been still for months. I'm tempted to dig it up and see if voles have damaged the roots, and maybe that's why the stunted growth. I hate these situations where I don't know if trying something will kill it but also leaving it as is could kill it. Any advice?

Palms in Idaho zone 7a

Hello all! Just thought I'd use this to share my adventures in trying to grow these plants here. My climate is a high desert with hot summers and coldish winters. Although most winters are relatively mild (last winter was a solid 8b at my house), we do get a few every once in awhile that go beloew 0. I'm not sure how many people in Idaho try to grow these, but I've seen a few get good results with windmill and a couple other varieties. Right now I have a needle palm thats been in the ground for a year, along with a recently planted waggie and windmill. The windmill and waggie are on the south side of the house, a couple of feet from the foundation. I don't …

Are there distinguishing characteristics for this Trachy? I’ve read they have thicker trunks and bright yellow tips on their more rigid leaf segments?

Of the 9 that are in the palm section. Only 1 is alive. There is also one at the entrance up against the wall that is doing the best.

Waterlogged Mediterranean fan palm

Does anyone have experience with medi's in poorly drained wet spots? I have been sweating on a flower bed for my wife this past week and I had to add a deep edging barrier to prevent the &^%x!@*! Bermuda grass from invading everything (about 5/6" in ground). Since the medi is in the lowest point in the bed, I found it completely waterlogged after the rains of the past couple of days. It drains, but slowly, and it will probably be sitting in that swamp for a day or two before it seeps into the soil (heavy sandy loam + clay). The medi has been in that spot for years and relatively uncared for (never watered or fertilized). It survived Uri unprotected, btw, s…

Nice Minor Volunteer
by WSimpson- 2 replies

A lot of Minor seedlings come up where you don't want them , like right up against the sidewalk or driveway , but when I was cleaning out a certain jungly area of my yard ( an overgrown butterfly bush ) , I happened to see a nice shapely small palm in a perfect spot . I think I will take care of this one and let it get large . I really never knew this Minor was there until I pruned back that wildly out of control butterfly bush . Anyone else have a nice shapely volunteer , of any variety of palm , that popped up in the "perfect spot " ? Will

How close to house?
by BeyondTheGarden- 20 replies

I have a few queens and mules that I'd like to put in the ground, but of course they're not hardy here (mules may be marginal I guess). I'd like to plant them right up against the house to get that extra bit of protection and microclimate (still planning to box them in, in winter). I know a lot of palms can be planted up really close to the house, and they'll tip out away from the house, toward the sun as they grow. I just don't know how close I can go (I know both of these palms develop very large crowns). Thanks.

Heating idea

I probably won’t do this for the upcoming winter but when I move and plant a few long term Trachy, I’m wondering if something like this would be effective during those 24+ hour cold snaps. A large perimeter of burlap to block the wind, planted near the house with mulch for soil warmth, and this heater mounted above the palm. The crown could stay open to avoid fungal problems with top heat which would probably dry it out a bit. Trying to think like a botanist. Would it be enough during some Z6b winters?

Oregon queen palm - for real.
by Chester B- 3 replies

I was walking my dogs in the subdivision next to mine and I came across a house full of palms and exotics. To my surprise in the front yard was a pretty big queen palm. I plan on going back to talk to the owners to get some more info. They also had either another queen or mule behind the fence. No idea how long it’s been there or if it gets protected. This is in the Portland Oregon area.

I haven’t noticed before when spears Start to open up but the color isn’t very green on this new spear opening up. Is it lack of chlorophyll from the sun? And will get more green as it opens, or is there something I need to address for a nutritional deficiency?

Before and After
by GregVirginia7- 5 replies

Don’t talk much about my Needle palm but it’s really grown into a nice three larger, two smaller clump of trunks...three trunks are about 12” and the other two are smaller but it’s gone from about a 3’ high by 2’ wide in-ground experiment in 2014 to a 5x 5 picture of health today...what a fantastic cold hardy palm. Aside from a bit of protection its first winter, it’s faced every winter on its own. Surprisingly, the main trunk died a couple years after planting but the suckers prospered... First winter: Somewhere in the middle: To present: Anyway, sitting at the base of a slight slope, it gets a fair share of runoff and…
