On day 2 we visited Bélouve forest in the centre of the island. We saw mountains covered in lush vegetation, sometimes hidden in the clouds, one of the 3 calderas of the island, tree ferns and Acanthophoenix crinita.

IPS Pretour Maui!

My adventure started as I left my house in PR en route to pick up my neighbor and head to the commuter flight in Puerto Rico to connect with the San Juan airport. Just some giant bamboo toppled by hurricane Fiona that happened to fall during the night. I am pretty quick with my sawzall and by headlights I cleared the path pretty quickly. Glad I had recharged the Ryobi batteries with my little generator the night before! All our flights were on time and we were treated to an amazing pre pre tour dinner by hosts Andy and Arlene Hurwitz near the LA airport. See the group photo in the most current IPS newsletter. Many of us opted t…

Just so I can better prepare financially and commence packing my duffel bag (and I apologise if this has been discussed before and everyone else knows!) where will the two next IPS Biennials be located? Now that I'll be retired beginning in 2021 (and hopefully for a bunch of years thereafter before the "reaper" calls me home!!) I DO want to get out of the USA, for at least one of these wonderful events, that I've only read about and dreamed of!! I couldn't even imagine the majesty in the sightings of some of my favourite palm species (at home!!) Wow! Thanks for the information too. I would be in absolute awe to get even ONE chance this lifetime to see palms in their …

Madagascar Tour - Pre or Post Biennial May 2020
by SW_FL_Palms- 5 replies

IPS has posted it's pre & post tours. Unfortunately, the do not go to areas where you can see the Spiny Forest, Succulents, Baobabs. Of course, it is the palm society so they are focused on palms. Is there anyone out there that would like to join us on Madagascar tour that would take us to see the iconic plants that I listed above ? A tour company will customize. and provide a quote So let me know if you are interested, and preference for either before or after the biennial in Reunion.

Postcards from Colombia

Hello from Cali, Colombia. It is the evening of the Farewell Dinner, but I will take a few minutes to post some pics from the adventure. Bo (bgl) and I spent a few days in Bogotá in advance of the Biennial. We visited the Jardín Botanico de Bogotá and also went up the teleférico to the top of Montserrate to take in views of the city. The elevation of the city is 8,675 ft. (2,644 m.) and the top of the hill is 10,341 ft. (3,152 m.), a good way to acclimate for hiking at lower levels to see Ceroxylon.

Biennial 2016 Coco de Mer

Still sorting out my 8000+ photos of the 2016 Biennial and Post-Biennial. Both trips were a perfect mix of cultivated palms and palms in habitat. I had a great time, so a big thank you to everyone who organised and attended the trips! One of the higlights was of course the iconic Double Coconut with leaves up to 10 m2 growing in the botanic gardens of Singapore and Darwin. An amazing palm considering the poor conditions in which it grows in the Seychelles.

Hello everyone! I'm conducting a survey in order to create an article for the IPS newsletter to help promote the IPS Biennial. It would be greatly appreciated if you could answer some of the following questions by responding to this thread or by private message. 1. Which Biennial was your favorite and why? 2. What made going to the Biennial special? 3. What was the most fond memory you have made while attending a Biennial? 4. What valuable information have you learned by going to the Biennials? 5. Do you plan to attend the Sarawak Malaysia/Singapore Biennial in 2016? 6. What incentives does the Biennial have to offer someone who has never been? We would love to hear…

2014 Miami Biennial - Pinecrest Gardens
by Walter John- 5 replies
- 2.2k views
Pinecrest Gardens is the former site of the esteemed Miami Parrot Jungle. It was located very close to the hotel and was on our way to Fairchild gardens. The palm collections here were originally begun by one of the IPS founders, Nat De Leon. Personally I was glad they didn't keep parrots in the cages there any more, as I'm not a big fan of this. The landscaped tropical settings here were fabulous, I loved it. Here we go.. We picked this day to wear our "Aussie Ratpack" tees, as can be seen in the gathering of people about to enter the gardens. Our guide explains a few things about the garden history and if anybody plays up or goes off the path they'll get thro…

2014 Miami Biennial - Highlands Hammock State Park
by Walter John- 4 replies
- 2.2k views
In keeping with my recent penchant for posting biennial photos represenative of the locations and themes, here are selections of photos I took from Day 2 of the biennial at the Highlands Hammock State Park. It took a while to get there but it was well worth it, I loved the walk and seeing three separate palm species in habitat, namely Rhapidophyllum hystrix, Sabal minor, and Sabal palmetto was fantastic. I'm also a huge fan of Tillandsias from the bromeliade family and seeing many of these adhered to the vegetation was a real buzz. I implore others to add to these threads I have begun, I remember before I went on a biennial (two now), I used to love reading about the …

2014 Miami Biennial - Bahia Honda State Park

Sometime mid biennial, on bus tour to Key West we stopped at the Bahia Honda State Park for a look at Cocothrinax argentata growing wild and there were some Leucothrinax morrisii also. We really liked the beach view so I took some photographs there as well. A nice vibe about this beach.

Orchid & Plumeria photographs from USA / Biennial adventures
by Walter John- 4 replies
- 2.2k views
Hello folks, much has been said and shown already from the recently completed IPS Miami biennial. I would like to introduce a specific post on the orchids and some plumeria I and others saw up close and personal. I know Daryl took a number of very good orchid and plumeria photographs as well and when he finds the time I'd love to see his as well. It won't matter if they of the same plant, there's always a different angle and of course with more superior cameras than mine, a lot more definition. Most of the orchid pics are from our visit to Autobon house in Key West, I'll just post them array style, tell me what you think and add your own pics of course. One of the man…

A beautiful morning at Block Botanical Garden

Earlier this year, I was fortunate enough to have been chosen to help out during the Block Botanical Gardens stop, for the IPS Biennial. As such, I got to know the gardens and the man behind this jewel of South Florida, Dr. Jeff Block, who has been maintaining excellence in horticulture for nearly 25 years! Spending time with Dr. Block, at his fantastic garden is an amazing treat on its own--getting to meet a lot of the people I have come to know and respect, on Palmtalk, was icing on the cake. I will start with a few photos and then let anyone chime in with recollections or pictures of the day, then I will further the thread with more photos--thank you everyone for such …

I've finally sorted through my photos from the biennial, which I'll now post in more or less chronological order. I have IDs for almost everything, bug please correct any mistakes you see. Our first stop was Highland Hammock State Park, which contains an amazing old growth forest. The mid day light was brutal for photos, but here's a couple (mainly with Sabal palmetto in them).
