by Jeff Searle- 23 replies

I was recently told that the dates for Thailand might be moved from Sept. to now October. Is this possible? For some of us that are planning a trip like, we need to be sure on correct dates for various reasons. And for one big reason...flight dates including connecting flights. Could one of the board members that knows something / anything, please chime in. Thank-you. Jeff

Most of my pictures from the Amazon pre-tour feature our fellow travelers and the people we met along the way. But I’ll make sure to throw in a few palm pictures as well especially in the later posts. Here’s a teaser: first, a fisherman cruising in front of a stand of Leopoldinia major; second a hillside of Euterpe precatoria, both pictures taken on the Rio Negro.

Lorenzi's Plantarum - last stop of Post Tour
by Al in Kona- 23 replies

This was our last day of the Post Trip. We left Belo Horizonte, M.G. on an early (one hour) flight to Campinas, Sao Paulo state. Then a short bus ride to Nova Odessa where Harri Lorenzi's PLANTARUM is located. Offical name is: Instituto Plantarum de Estudos da Flora LTDA. It's a beautifully landscaped botanical garden not yet open to the general public. This garden has a fantastic collection of most of the Brazilian palm species (minus a few of the Amazonian species only). Here you will find all the known Syagrus, Butia, and Allagoptera species, many of which are not yet grown or known (some newly discovered) outside of Brazil. Here are some of the palms we saw ther…

Just saw a few pictures of Rio in this weblink and decided to share the link: Rio photos UOL It seems the sun is shining there again, but the "marvelous city" was badly hurt last week...some attractions are still closed down for access problems and repair. Hopefully things are improving there and we'll have a great Biennial.

Sabal lecture in Rio
by Scott Zona- 1 reply

Many of the Biennial attendees enjoyed Tomas Font's presentation on Sabal, which led some folks to ask if my monograph of Sabal is still available. I have a pdf scan of the monograph, which I am happy to send to anyone who wants it. It's a large file (51 MB), so I have to send it via yousendit.com, which is free and easy to use. If anyone wants a copy, please send me a message to zonas@fiu.edu. Scott

Tijuca Forest National Park
by Gileno Machado- 1 reply

One of the main attractions of Rio de Janeiro was unfortunetly closed down for visits during the IPS Biennial. I haven't visited the place since I was very young, with my parents, and I was expecting to come back last month with our IPS mates but the strong rainstorms in Rio in early April resulted in several landslides so the access to all roads and trails (including the old Imperial Chinese Vista and the tram to Corcovado) was forbidden for tourists and visitors for security reasons so we went to Flamengo Park and Pão de Açucar instead. The Tijuca Forest was the first National Park established in Brazil and it represents the largest urban Forest Eco-system in the world…

Deluge in Rio de Janeiro
by Gileno Machado- 7 replies

I'm very worried about the IPS Biennial which starts next week in Rio because of the terrible weather conditions there at the moment. In the last 24 hours they had a 15 hour continuous storm, with a record high precipitation there, reaching 339 mm (13 inches+) in some areas of the city, which has caused floodings at several places, many landslides with several dead people, etc. The Airport Santos Dumont is still closed down, all schools are closed and driving around the city is impossible at the moment, with chaotic traffic jams and drowned cars everywhere. The weather predictions are not optimistic for the next couple of days...I hope everything gets back to normal life…

Rio de Janeiro Biennial
by Gileno Machado- 38 replies

I decided to post a few photos of our trip to Rio last year as a teaser to the upcoming event. I've just noticed, from Bo's post in another thread, that many reservations were made in the last few days and that the IPS is contacting the hotel in Rio in order to book a few extra rooms, so I guess a great participation is expected this time. We'll also be attending the post tour to Minas Gerais and São Paulo, guided by Prof. Harri Lorenzi, and I was wondering what other members of Palmtalk are planning to come for this Biennial and the pre or post tours that will have more people participating, in April. Here are some pictures taken during our last trip to Rio, in Ju…

PalmTalk Names?
by Kim- 16 replies
- 4.5k views
Hello everyone, One of my contributions to the IPS Biennial in Rio de Janiero, Brazil will be printing up your name tags. So I have a question for you PalmTalk attendees: in addition to your name, would you also like your PalmTalk name on your name tag? For some of us, this is not an issue; my name is Kim, and my PalmTalk name is Kim -- no confusion there. But if your name is Arnold and we know you here as The Palminator it might be helpful so your online friends can identify you. If you have a preference one way or the other, please send me a message! Thanks, and see you in Rio! Cheers, Kim

PERU....IPS POST TOUR 2008 1 2 3
by Jeff Searle- 110 replies

When the IPS Biennial in Costa Rica ended, my wife Andrea, our good friends Judy and Jim Glock and myself returned home for only a short period of 1 day and then caught another flight out of Miami for a 6 hour flight down to Peru. We just had enough time at home to get our dirty clothes cleaned and then repacked, mow the grass,go to the nursery and plant some newly acquired seeds from CR, check on our pets, eat a good meal and one good night of sleep back in our own bed. We were on our way to stay at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica in Tambopata, Peru. This reserve is 678,774 acres or 274,690 hectare in size. To get there, one must take a boat ride down the Madre de Di…

Ryan, I'm happy to see that you've finally sorted out all your Costa Rica photos and that you're ready to begin posting! I know I'm not the only one looking forward to this! At some point within the next couple of months, we will add Biennial photos & info to the IPS website. Considering your professional approach and excellent coverage we may, among other things, simply add this entire thread to the Costa Rica 2008 link on the website. However, in order to avoid having to do major editing, it would be great if EVERYBODY who has a comment OR question to your thread could post it here IN THIS THREAD so that we can keep your Costa Rica thread completely "clean". In o…

Pre-Biennial Trip to Corcovado 1 2
by Jeff Searle- 54 replies

Andrea and I decided to jump at the oppurtunity to visit Corcovado National Park while in Costa Rica for the biennial. This is an area that I always wanted to see, but in my previous visits to Costa Rica, I was never able to plan for a trip to this vast rainforest down in the OSA peninsula. To get there, we took a 12 seater airplane ride down to a small town called Palmar Sur. From there, we boarded a small boat which we then took for a 2 hour boat ride on the Rio Sierpe to the mouth of the Pacific Ocean, then followed the coast line until we reached our jungle lodge. Here's Andrea getting ready to board our flight. Jeff

As luck would have it, Corcovado was my destination for the Biennial Post-Trip. I had no idea who else was signed up for the trip, and received my itinerary at the very last minute, but I knew I would have to take a flight and a boat ride to get there. I didn't know the flight would be in this plane: It was a 12-seater, so I settled in directly behind the pilot. The building you see in the background is the airport where we landed, resembling nothing so much as a 1950's filling station with the added attraction of a souvenir cart.

I am assuming this may be the first post from the IPS biennial in Costa Rica. Just a short note wishing you were all here, and to demonstrate that if you "mice" are thinking of playing while the "cat" is away...........make my day. I'll try to get a few pics posted, but the schedule they have planned here looks grueling. Be good.
