Scary Fire Pic
by MattyB- 8 replies
- 1.5k views
My mom sent me this crazy pic of one of the fires. The large Mountain in the background w/ the lights/towers on top to the left of the fire is Mt. Miguel. The two ridges down the slope on the right are also part of Mt. Miguel. The hill right in front of the two ridges is Dictionary Hill where Fouquieria and I live. I believe this pic is taken just before the fire came over Mt. Miguel and started burning down the other side.

So we stepped off the plane at DFW last night at 1930 hours and it was a balmy 72F. I had on black knee length cargos and a black spagetti strap cami. And sandals. Woke up this morning at our GO-JUS suite at the Fairmont and it was....72F (Kismet, you say? NOT.) The cold front swept through and dropped the temperature faster than a rock.I don't know what itt is out there right now but its colder than hell. The low will be about 38F tonight, and when the 40th Annual running of the 8 mile Turkey Trot starts tomorrow at 0900 wind chills are expexted to be in the TWENTIES Tat girl was unprepared for this decidedly unsavory development, havin brought only FLORIDA run…

gophers on slopes?
by MattyB- 13 replies
- 2.5k views
I know , I know, I know. Enough about my gophers! But I've got a real problem now that I have no clue how to go about solving. Everything is being planted in cages for now because I have so many gophers. In moist ground (even on my hillside in back) I am able to dig down and find enough room to put traps, bombs, poison in. My method needs some perfecting (haven't actually caught one yet) but at least I can get to the tunnels. My major problem right now is the embankment between the street and my driveway which is the steepest slope on my property. It's dry also so this adds to the frustration. I'm seeing gopher mounds but they're not mounds. The slope is so steep…

Some video of lava flow on Big Island

The "MattyB vs. the Volcano" thread was lost when the Palapa was nixed. I had some video left on my camera from last trip to the Big Island so I finally figured out how to get it onto photobucket so you guys could see. Jen is narrating for her students (she teaches science). You might catch a glimpse of me or Bo in there too. http://s146.photobucket.com/albums....113.flv

Flying to Hawaii
by doubravsky- 12 replies
- 1.3k views
Since there are quite a few IPS folks that have places or jobs or reasons to fly between the Big Island and SoCal, How do you all book your flights? Do you use points cards or programs? Do you use particular web sites like Hotwire or SideStep? Go through a particular airline? Do you book spearately the mainland flight and the inter-island, or together? We picked up the Citibank points card, thinking we should start using the points and the "companion travel free" piece... but found that we could buy two tickets through ATA online to Honolulu cheaper than the Citibank one ticket/ one free ticket price. Oh well, at least the points part will help. So, I'd love to…

FORUM ACTIVITY 1 2
by gsn- 48 replies
- 4.1k views
Is it just me or has anyone else noticed how quiet (decreased activity) the forum has become over the last month? I know we had the big PALAPA debate. Did people leave because of this,or are they taking a break like me, to see what the forum evolves into?I'll be honest it did leave a rather bad taste in my mouth regarding the site. I PM"D several people durning this debate with what I thought were legitimate questions, and they were received according to the PM logs, without even the courtesy of a response. I wonder if anyone else had this same situation happen? At ant rate I hope the forum comes back better, bigger, and stronger since the controversy. As I had …

Best cell phone plan in existence
by jenks- 0 replies

What's up gang. First, let me say that I do not benefit in any way form the deal I am about to tell you all about. I just want to share it with you all because I think it is the best bargain out there- maybe a little payback for all the knowledge I have accumulated from the fine posters on the board. My family business has had a 6 line Verizon account over 10 years. While waiting for Verizon to come out with a PDA phone with technology less than three years old, I stumbled upon a couple of phone geek web sites where others were waiting for the same thing. While following these potential release dates (and watching them come and go with no new phones), I noticed doze…

Saw a movie today at the Balmoral cinemas "Across the Universe", strictly for Beatles fans (probably covers most people), I loved it, something different, I think the genre would be musical romance comedy ? "Across the Universe" home page I intend to see "Death at a Funeral" soon, has anybody seen this at all ? What's everyone else seen recently ? At the movies or dvd will do.

Wish me Luck
by metalfan- 11 replies

Tomorrow is the first half marathon of the season for me. Its in Micanopy, and starts at 8am. The temperature should be a balmy 40-42F. This will be th first major run I have done in over a year, since I blew up my Achilles and have been suffering from chronic tendonitis. There's no way I will turn in a good time, I am shooting for just finishing between 2 hr10min and 2 hr30min. My hubby will be running it too (but not with me, he never hangs back with me), he's using it as a training run for the Boston Marathon in April. I plan to wear black shorts and a black bra top, and a long sleeved Killswitch Engage T shirt that I can take off and tie around my waist if it…
