The proper forum for asking questions about palms, germination, etc. is DISCUSSING PALMS WORLDWIDE, the second section on the main page. In DISCUSSING PALMS WORLDWIDE you will find a large group of participants eager to answer questions, admire photos, and share all things about palms, so please post there for the widest exposure. This is the right forum if you have a question or news item regarding the supporting organization THE INTERNATIONAL PALM SOCIETY (IPS). Thank you, and good growing!

I'm in the "frozen North" of Massachusetts - and obviously there won't be many growers up here, but if there are any, I'd love to hear from you! And maybe we can set up a palm/plant sale/swap? Just an idea. I could not find any forum on here regarding "where is everyone" , etc.

Now that you are as confused as I am, I just received an email from noreply@palms.org with the above bizarre topic and the content: MargaretY6 wrote: NpMFz3sbM SkJGy0fhR FdFMc4hwZ DtMYs7bqF PMDJ8887NDHE Topic Link: https://palms.org/forums/topic/vtghc5hjq-sbdjc9gpc/ I am fairly certain that the above was some kind of glitch, but I sure am not going to click on it to find out what this coded message means! Anyone else get a weird email from palms.org?

Am I the only one...?

I received the emailed invitation to join the webinar with Dr. Baker on Nov. 14. Sounds interesting. Am I the only one who noticed that half the leaves in the background of the email are Monstera deliciosa? Although it's tropical, M. deliciosa is an aroid, not a palm. This may be evidence of my warped sense of humor, but I think that's funny.

Having been nominated by Palmtalk active IPS Director Ken Johnson, and seconded by Palmtalk active directors BGL (Bo-Göran Lundkvist), Kim (Kim Cyr), and DoomsDave (Dave Bleistein). I am proud to announce my candidacy for the IPS Board of Directors My experience - I have served on numerous boards and commissions in my 57 years, in roles from founder to board member to executive committee member to chairman. The organizations have ranged from High School Academies, Chamber of Commerces, Annual Conventions involving 1000+ attendees, multi-million dollar Technology Centers and State Advisory Boards. I am familiar with the organizational dynamics, technicalities, and …

To the PalmTalk Community, After considerable thought and consideration I have decided to step down as Chair of PalmTalk and also remove myself from the PalmTalk Committee and I have sent an email to this effect to Leland Lai, the President of the IPS, and the entire Board of Directors. I have had this responsibility for the past seven years, and I have worked closely with Dean Ouer, our Moderator, and the rest of the Committee, during this time. I have truly enjoyed this opportunity, and it’s been very satisfying for me to see how PalmTalk has grown and evolved over these years. I am a firm believer in accountability and transparency, and during my tenure as Pre…

Discussion about the standard Biennial being too expensive for many people has got me thinking. I have come to believe the main attraction for the standard Biennial is exotic destinations with habitat viewing. The reason people are willing to pay for an expensive trip and travel with a large group of people is because of the access to palms in unusual places. Correct? Many people have waxed poetic over the helicopter ride to view palms in the Dominican Republic -- not an experience you can easily arrange on your own, right? Now in 2014 we have a Biennial in Miami, and interest from US palmophiles is kind of so-so, probably because so many have already been to Flori…

In order for this info not to get "lost in the shuffle", decided to start a new thread, rather than adding it to page 3 in the other thread. This is from Jim Cain: "I am the person to contact if there ANY questions about registration for the Biennial. I am the "IPS 2008 Biennial Registration Coordinator" and am the sole person responsible for tracking and confirming all registrations. My email address is all over the biennial website as the person to contact. The procedure is that ALL registrants get several emails from me, as follows: 1) Auto generated email sent immediately when online Registration form is submitted (whether submitted by Biennial participant of …

Biennial photos needed

I want to thank all that have added their comments on the earlier website improvement thread and invite others to do the same. The IPS website will be undergoing many improvements over the coming months. Once completed, it should be an invaluable source of palm information. One noticeably absent feature is the mention of past Biennials. A large majority of IPS members have been unable to attend a Biennial and are curious about what exactly is involved. I had no idea how great the week can be until attending my first in 2004. That said the best way to convey the true nature of a Biennial is through photos. One look at the many Costa Rican Biennial threads and a…

If you want to run, here is a BOD Campaign Platform I Could Get Behind First, get over the palm snobbery. We should not be about rare palms, tropical palms, or even limited to palms in general. Think about your palm interest, I bet for almost all of us it encompasses just a part of picture, it is just as much a feeling as it is a thing. We have a lifestyle to share and sell with palms at its center. This will get us the “mass” we need to monetize and survive. Comprehensive marketing and monetization “strategy,” including a single document management platform integrating the IPS website and PT under one umbrella (same site, no more separation, which is partly…

BRAZIL - April 2010 1 2 3

As most of you know by now, the next Biennial will be in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil in April 2010. During the IPS Board meeting at DuPlooy's Jungle Lodge in Belize last week, this was our number one issue, and all aspects were discussed. Some of the more important pieces of information: Official arrival date will be Saturday, April 17, with the welcome dinner that same evening. Exact itinerary is still to be worked out, but it goes without saying that the Rio Botanic Garden will be one of our main destinations. Jill Menzel, who is an IPS Director, has a large ranch about 90 minutes away, with palms in habitat, a garden as well as Golden Tamarind monkeys in their nativ…

John DeMott and I have just returned from Brazil where we met up with Jill Menzel and Randall Quirk, who some of you will remember from the Dominican Republic Biennial. We went to Brazil check out the various day to day sites for the 2010 Biennial and take care of some of the details to make sure this will be an enjoyable and smooth trip for all attendees. To whet your appetite, we thought it would be fun to show you some photos of our trip so you can see what will be awaiting you next April. Over the next several days I will put more and more photos up of the various places we will visit. I will say right now that I think anyone choosing to go on this biennial wi…

For those that have been to Brazil and have gotten a Visa, would you please share your experience with us. Attached is a PDF of the Brazilian Visa Application There are several items that you must have before applying including your airline tickets. It also says " If attending a conference or seminar, a letter of invitation from the organization in Brazil which is hosting the event. " Could IPS supply a letter of invitation that we can all use - it does say from the organization in Brazil. Brazilian_visa_application.pdf

Since we will be in Brazil, we don't want to miss seeing Iguassu Falls. According to the Biennial Package download, the IPS lists it in under "Other Potential Side Trips", but they are not sponsoring any side trips. Anyone else interested in going ? Anyone (maybe someone from Brazil) can give us some recommendations ? a tour company ? etc.
