The IPS website, www.palms.org, has now been updated with the information about GP2, and you can place your order on-line. There's a special price for IPS members, and if you're NOT an IPS member it pays to become one just to get the special IPS membership price. As you will see, anticipated delivery of GP2 is quoted as late December. BUT, the shipment is due to arrive at Allen Press in Kansas in a couple of weeks. The "late December" shipment date was arrived at before we knew the estimated arrival date in Kansas, so I'm hoping that shipment of individual books will be possible before late December. At this point, let's just hope for the best and be pleasantly surpris…

Testing... testing... <taps the microphone> is it working? Hmm... a new sub-forum, very good subject. I have been a member of the IPS since the mid 1980's and I can not imagine what the world of palms would be without it. With over 20 years of informative publications and support of local chapters and societies that I have been a member of, I have always enjoyed hearing about what the IPS will be doing next. How long have you been a member and what have you benefited the most from? Ryan

First of all - this poll really belongs in the IPS sub-forum, but I need for it to get maximum exposure, so we'll leave it here for the next several days, and then move it. Background: The IPS will hold its annual Board meeting in Belize on Thursday 12th of March. The number 1 topic to be discussed will be the next Biennial, planned for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 17-24 April 2010. Considering the general economic uncertainty around the world, it's important that we make the right decisions for the next Biennial. The most important, and most difficult, is to anticipate the number of participants. By far, the number one cost of any Biennial is the cost of accomodations, and…

Wrong linked online articles of Palms

Today I renewed my IPS membership and one of my first actions was to read the last issues of Palms. During this, I noticed that a couple of the articles are wrong linked. For example the article "New Species of Pinanga (Palmae) from Vietnam": It is linked as: https://www.palms.org/palmsjournal/2008/palms52n2p63-69.pdf but the address is: https://www.palms.org/palmsjournal/2008/v52n2p63-69.pdf Marcus

Question from newbie attending Biennial
by Randall- 3 replies
I know that it's still early and that all the details of the 2010 Biennial are still being discussed and finalized, but I was wondering how the IPS relays all the details for the trip to it's members and how much notice is given before the event. I am a fairly new member and have no idea how this works, but would some day like to attend one of these events if possible. Having never attended an event such as this, nor found helpful information for someone new like myself who would enjoy these events, I need useful information such as when the cost of attendance is passed along and how soon before the event is it relayed to members. Also what exactly is included in the …

Pre-1989 Palms/Principes

I understand that the IPS is in the process of changing the location and how it deals with back issues. However, I wonder if anyone can tell me whether back issues of the IPS journal (Palms formerly Principes) can be obtained from the IPS (or anyone else) for the volumes prior to 1989?

Question on IPS Membership Renewal
by Gbarce- 1 reply

"I’ve checked on this, and Eugenio’s payment was applied to a 2008 membership. This was done due to the amount he paid ($35). In accordance with the new pricing, all $35 payments coming in through the website are applied to 2008 memberships and all $45 payments are applied to 2009. Because of this, Eugenio will receive the 3 back-issues that have mailed for 2008, as well as the last issue as part of the regular mail list. The back-issues were mailed out on October 9th." The quote above came from an e-mail forwarded to Bo and was part of another thread. Anyway, simply put I just joined in October 2008 but because of the Price difference in in membership the issues of …

2009 Renewal notices for IPS members will be sent out shortly. Please help save the environment by helping to make this an electronic process - avoiding the cost and MOST IMPORTANT the environmental impact of sending out hard copy notices, mailing back checks, etc. It appears that many email addreses in the IPS database may be out of date. If you have changed your email address within the last couple of years, please email your new address to info@palms.org with your first and last name and your city. If we have a valid email for you, we will be shortly sending all members an email with their online account number and password. This information will give you access …

Just to let everybody know what's coming, here's the information about Genera Palmarum 2. This information will be in the next issue of PALMS, due out next month (September): "Genera Palmarum Edition 2 The IPS, LH Bailey Hortorium and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, are proud to announce the new edition of the ground-breaking Genera Palmarum. The second edition is a complete overhaul of the 1987 edition and includes chapters on the structure of palms, pollen, cytology, chemistry, fossils, evolution, phylogeny, natural history and biogeography and the classification based on the latest molecular evidence. The new classification has substantial changes in the composition …

Mike Merritt, a/k/a 'Mike in Kurtistown' here on PalmTalk, has volunteered for the job as IPS Treasurer. The IPS Board has just voted and approved Mike as a new Director (serving the 2008-2012 term), and as our new Treasurer. This is a very important job and we really appreciate Mike's dedication to the IPS and his willingness to take on this crucial position. Mike - thank you very much for stepping forward, and I look forward to working with you! Bo-Göran

IPS Management decision
by bgl- 19 replies
- 7.3k views
For many years Allen Press has been very instrumental to the IPS. The IPS has had two major, and separate, agreements with Allen Press. One is for the printing of PALMS four times a year. The second contract is for Management, which includes (primarily) keeping track of membership payments and maintaining an up-to-date membership list. After proposals from both Allen Press (AP) and Stansfeld & Fairbrother Inc. (S&F) at the Board meeting in Costa Rica on May 3rd, the IPS Board has now voted to transfer the Management responsibility from AP to S&F. S&F is the company that's been responsible for the development of the new (i.e. current) IPS website, and impro…

I regret to announce that Kathryn Ostadal has resigned as IPS Treasurer, and we are now in urgent need of someone to replace her in this very important position. Here's what the IPS By-laws says about the Treasurer position: "Sec. 4 - The Treasurer shall receive, disburse, and have the care and custody of all funds and securities of the Society in such bank or banks as he may deem suitable, with approval of the Board of Directors. He shall sign, together with the co-signature of a Director, make and endorse in the name of the Society all checks and orders for the payment of money and shall maintain books of account of such receipts and disbursements, which shall be sub…

Idea for a publication
by John in Andalucia- 25 replies

I'm keen on data threads. In a previous thread we discussed a calculator for identifying palms, but we know there are too many variables. We have a freeze-damage data thread with some excellent data from members, and I'm sure the IPS has the combined knowledge to collate some golden information that could be published as a guide book for palm shoppers. I've always liked pocket books, and can imagine shoppers seeing a palm for sale, and with the aid an IPS Pocket Guide, being able to reference its pot size & age, approximate size, hardiness and other general data. Each page in the guide could feature a review by an IPS forum member. Does that sound like a feasible idea…

Palm Society Roster
by PalmGuyWC- 1 reply

I don't pretend to be the brightest light on the block, but........My most current PS roster is missing. I think it got accidently thrown out with the junk mail. Anyway, I've been without one for a long time, and I miss it. I need to get in touch with several PS members in Florida and S. Cal. but feel paralized without the roster. Perhaps it's already available on this web site, but if it is, I can't find it. Wouldn't it be great if the Roster were published on here, and with a couple of clicks on the key board we could pull up any address? Tell me if I'm missing something. When are we going to get a new roster or is it even being printed anymore? Dick

The IPS Website
by SubTropicRay- 25 replies

As you've already noticed, the new Palmtalk forum looks fantastic. Unfortunately, the IPS homepage currently lacks the same excitement and appeal. I am heading up the IPS Website committee and need some ideas from members on how to improve the current homepage. Any suggestions are welcome with the goal being a homepage where one can buy books, see an updated roster, view an extensive photo collection, view all back issues of Principes and Palms and perhaps peruse a database with such relevant info as seed germination time and cultivation experiences. The intro also needs quite a bit of work as it now appears a bit drab and mundane. Palms are amazing plants and the we…

I've received a request how to acquire "A Review of the Genus Pritchardia" which was sent out with the Dec 2007 Palms, and since the information may be of interest to others as well, here's the answer from Rusty Wright at Allen Press: "Contact me directly by phone or email and order the Pritchardia supplement with check, Mastercard or Visa. It is $16. Rusty Wright | Association Manager | Allen Press Inc. | 810 East 10th St. | Lawrence, KS 66044 | 800-627-0326 x215 | 785-843-1234 | Fax: 785-843-1274 | rwright@allenpress.com"

IPS brochure
by bgl- 4 replies
- 3.4k views
Even though we are not quite ready to go ahead with this project (and I have been sidetracked with other IPS issues lately), things will happen fairly soon. I hope! Just a bit of background: the IPS has a number of different Committees. Two of the most important are the Affiliate Relations Committee and the Membership Committee. These two committees have a close working relationship, since they obviously overlap in their objectives. Right now, the Membership Committee is in the process of coming up with an IPS brochure. I'm hoping we're going to have something concrete during the month of July. The Affiliate Relations Committee will establish closer relations with the…

The next IPS Board meeting will be in San Jose, Costa Rica, on Saturday May 3rd, 2008. I have been nominated as the next President, taking over from Paul Craft - "licuala" on PalmTalk - who's been the President since the Biennial here in Hawaii in May 2004. PalmTalk is probably the most effective way for the IPS to reach new potential members, and thus make the organization even stronger, more effective in achieving its goals and even more international in its scope. Everybody who's active here, whether you're currently an IPS member or not, should be interested in making this happen. The more activity we have here on PalmTalk, the more interesting things get! We h…
