The proper forum for asking questions about palms, germination, etc. is DISCUSSING PALMS WORLDWIDE, the second section on the main page. In DISCUSSING PALMS WORLDWIDE you will find a large group of participants eager to answer questions, admire photos, and share all things about palms, so please post there for the widest exposure. This is the right forum if you have a question or news item regarding the supporting organization THE INTERNATIONAL PALM SOCIETY (IPS). Thank you, and good growing!

Some forums missing?
by Josh76- 3 replies

Hi all. Is it just me, or did some of the threads on the main forum disappear? Specifically the one that had the name 'Tropical plants - other than palms' or something like that? It used to be on the homepage of the forum for me but hasn't been there for at least the last two weeks. Thanks, Josh

Greetings, I am trying to network with IPS members in Indonesia as I have a good friend that travels to Jakarta and Sumatra a couple of times each year to visit friends and family. English speaking preferred but not absolutely required since my friend can interpret. Anyone can PM me or simply reply. Thanks! Mark Kolbe

I joined the IPS back in March, and I haven't heard anything back since the initial "thank you for joining" email. I can log in on palms.org, but no IPS member privileges here. No Palms journal either. Of course, I have attempted to contact admin through palms.org, but I haven't heard anything back. Are others having this issue? Uncertain where to go from here... 🤷♂️ Chris

Hello, I am the Head Librarian af the Geneva Botanical Garden, Switzerland. We own a full set of the journals PRINCIPE and PALMS from inception in 1956. Unfortunately we did not received the four issues of the vol. 65(2021) of PALMS and now these issues are out of stock. I am looking for these four issues as second-hand issues. May I ask the members of IPS if somebody would be ready to offer/sell these four issues, please? Of course we are ready to pay the postage costs from anywhere to Switzerland. Thank you in advance for your help in this matter. Best regards, Pierre Boillat Head Librarian Conservatoire et Jardin botaniques de Genève Bibliothèqu…

Complete a Quad reservation for Hawaii Biennial?
by Larry Klotz- 0 replies

I'm considering the upcoming Biennial in Hawaii as a single attendee but would like to be part of a Quad reservation to reduce the cost. Do any registrants need a fourth person to complete such a reservation? Thanks for your consideration. I would enjoy seeing everyone -- and visiting Hawaii again since I've only been there one time, and that was in 1992! Sincerely, Larry

Where is the Board going for its meeting?

On the IN-BETWEEN -YEARS, the board usually goes on a mini biennial to discuss Society business and the actual biennials. As a Lifetime Member, I sometimes get invited to these. That is, during non Kung Flu Pandemic years. What has happened lately and what are plans for the future? A better understanding of this might encourage more lifetime memberships and maybe board participation.

I am the cofounder of the Sacramento Botanical Garden. We are creating a botanical garden for Sacramento, which, sadly has none. We are a 501 (c) (3 ) tax exempt nonprofit. On May 6th, Sacramento has its annual Big Day of Giving. I want to promote our cause, not so much for the donations, but more for getting the work out, and being able to show the city and state representatives of the continued and growing interest in our project. We will, of course, have a 'tropical look' garden, in which we will have as varied a palm collection as one can have in Sacramento's hot summers, and rarely frosty winters. Would I be allowed to post this in the General Palm Di…

Enjoyed Zoom meeting!
by WestCoastGal- 3 replies

Wanted to stop by and relay that my husband and I very much enjoyed this past Saturday morning’s zoom meeting with Don Hodel. Interesting weevil and banana moth topic (moth topic in more detail at later date) and enjoyed the photo tour of the four San Diego area gardens. It was the first one we managed to attend. The topic of holding future meetings on zoom after in-person monthly meeting tours start up again is also why I’m posting. Our vote would be to continue offering them. I’m sure many of our members and not-yet members would benefit from the info presented and simply due to location cannot be there in person. Many people simply don’t have access to this kind …

spread the disease

Let us step back and look at our palm addiction and discuss possible ways of infecting others with this illness In the past i have suggested we look at those visiting tropical locations as most vunerable We missed the opportunity of the 'Green Wave' with both resorts and cruise lines but feel as a educational society we should find little resistance to co-operation. In the resort world a single sheet flyer on the palms on site could bring awareness. I picture it as a yellow sheet with sepia drawings...left in the room at the resort.. the diff tween fan and feather is new and eye opening and suddenly theyre not just palm trees WOW. Please be creative..thin…

Now that you are as confused as I am, I just received an email from noreply@palms.org with the above bizarre topic and the content: MargaretY6 wrote: NpMFz3sbM SkJGy0fhR FdFMc4hwZ DtMYs7bqF PMDJ8887NDHE Topic Link: https://palms.org/forums/topic/vtghc5hjq-sbdjc9gpc/ I am fairly certain that the above was some kind of glitch, but I sure am not going to click on it to find out what this coded message means! Anyone else get a weird email from palms.org?

Am I the only one...?
by TNAndy- 0 replies

I received the emailed invitation to join the webinar with Dr. Baker on Nov. 14. Sounds interesting. Am I the only one who noticed that half the leaves in the background of the email are Monstera deliciosa? Although it's tropical, M. deliciosa is an aroid, not a palm. This may be evidence of my warped sense of humor, but I think that's funny.

PALMS Journal printed copies
by Pablo Palma- 1 follower

Hi everyone, I've recently joined the IPS, I'm studying to get my PhD in Mexico and my main interest is to read as much articles as I can from the PALMS Journal about several topics. My love for palms began about 3 years ago and hasn't stopped growing ever since. I have a couple of questions regarding the IPS membership: Do printed copies that get sent outside the US can be traced? To me that's an important topic because in Mexico the local mail isn't a 100% reliable (don't know if people from other countries have this problem as well). My other question is: does the IPS sends an email or some type of notification to members when the copies get shipped? I don't know…

Trouble with IPS membership
by Grasswing- 1 follower

Hello, I had started IPS membership again after some pause last year in August, with paid delivery of the Journal. Unfortunately there was some mistake in the database, since I made a new membership and the first two journal volumes didn't arrive. I wrote on IPS facebook page, and resolved the issue with Yvonne Feltman later by email. She said that she will update the database to prevent this from happening again and I received the Journals together soon after that. Unfortunately, it is September now and I still dont have the other two copies as well. I tried to contact IPS on Facebook twice since this August, with no reply (the admin only read the message). I t…

What's up with IPS? The web site is still showing information for the Biennial 2018 - Colombia - May 26 - June 2, 2018 event, along with a link to register. The link to the "latest" newsletter pulls up the October 2018 letter. I also received a membership renewal notification 3 months late. Am I missing something here?

What does the LIKE button do?
by Steve Mac- 2 followers

So before the new 'like' button, it was 'Rank' for participation or number of posts and 'Reputation' for 'Upvote' which was a 'Thanks' for your knowledge or effort in helping from someone in the thread. usually the OP (Original Poster, the thread starter). It seems to be an extra step to thank someone for their knowledge or effort now and raise their Reputation for that help. There are now more likes given than upvotes because it is easier. Like is the easy default. Where do the 'Likes' go if not to reputation? (where I think that they were intended). They are going somewhere, I imagine they are worth something to someone. We know that rank or rep does not mean m…

On sign in the remember me button is clicked by default. I always deselect it because I don't know what it actually means. What does it do? This is probably a question for the Mod.

Hello IPS, just a suggestion. I am not criticizing, I want to help you, not real help, (like doing this myself) just advice like you often get here. There has often been talk here about getting new members, like there is always in all of the groups that I am or have been involved with here locally in Sydney. A while ago if a new member here, asked a question, they would be inundated with welcomes and advice offered. It is not the case now. Recently I responded to a New member, count 1, "Help with palm please" , No one had answered for over two weeks. I almost did not bother either, because if I had joined a new group and asked a question and not had an a…

Contact IPS Bookstore?
by Valhallalla- 1 follower

Is there any way to contact a live person at the IPS bookstore? There are several books I would like to purchase but the shipping is ridiculous. I have selected six books with a total price of $139.45. After I enter my location info (Florida) it calculates the shipping to be $88.00. $88.00!?! Holy smokes, that is almost $15 per book! The only shipping option is USPS Priority Mail. Assuming each book weighs two pounds (seriously, they don't weigh close to that much) I could still ship the entire bunch for less than $10 total by using USPS Media Mail. USPS knows that books (and other media) are heavy and they have Media Mail Rate just for that reason. It is totally unn…

IPS membership badge

Hi guys! So yesterday I decided to become a full-blown IPS member. I purchased a membership and according to the site, I am now a member. Woohoo! However, my PalmTalk profile did not "auto upgrade" me from plain ol' Forum Member to IPS Member. Will that automatically change with time or is there something I need to do myself, like write someone specific a message? Thanks for your guidance! Zoli
