Prichardia pacifica

Although this palm hasnt been through a freeze, I felt these photos were still informative. I have found that the reported extreme cold sensitivity of Prichardia pacifica is true. Fro two years in a row now, when temps get to the 42-44F range, this palm will start to spot....more heavily on the older leaves and lightly on the newer ones. So far this winter (2006-2007), the palm has seen down to 42.6F (December 9, 2006). But, this palm is good looking enough to merit the trouble IMO. Overall Newer Leaf (midway up crown) Older Leaf

7 gallon plant, removed from green house 5.5 yrs ago, 6 fronds or so,10" height, just starting to grow well this past summer, high wind exposure (!), saw 32F (measured far side of prop. under patio cover, temp was almost certainly lower for this location), no canopy, frost at least one day, spike pulled out on 3/14/07, total loss. 3 gallon plants, ~3 fronds, 6" height, virtually same location, w/ less wind exposure, no damamge.

Small in ground palm which stands about 24" high. The "official" air temperature on my weather station (at about 4-5 ft above ground ) was 34F. But, due to the still air, I measured 29F at ground level. This palm was in the open and not exposed to frost. Certer portions of skyward facing leaf surfaces on several leaves were damaged.

2022 January 2022 Florida Freeze Report 1 2

This topic is started to document the cold damage, or hopefully lack thereof, due to the cold spell. Initially, it looks like most of the damage done locally was due to frost. As you get outside of town, the damage can get pretty severe on the "high-9b/low-10a" palms that have become more common due to the advent of Lethal Bronzing. I'll begin with this photo I captured west of the airport on Medulla Rd. The damage didn't even wait for the warmup to manifest. For my own garden, I'm going to wait until it warms up to do my report. There may be palms that look undamaged now that will show damage after the next three days go over 80F. There may also be palms tha…

The coconut palm in the below photos was the first one I discovered when I moved to Highlands County, Florida, in 1997 (and inland county situated equal distance from the Atlantic Ocean to its east and and Gulf of Mexico to its west). I've been tracking its growth ever since then. The palm is located approximately 10 miles NE of the small town of Lake Placid, Florida (I live 2 miles east of town). But on the morning of January 5, 2001, I experienced the coldest freeze (radiational) in the 11 years living here. That morning my low temperature bottomed out at 22 degrees F (-5.5 C) with heavy frost in the open yard. Archbold Biological Station, 9 miles to my south, rec…

AAA...Data reporting

In order for this project to be successful, we need the following info... Temp, duration below freezing(a good guess anyway), microclimate(under eave, down in a windless hole, etc) and VERY important: Plant size !!! A 24' box sized plant will take considerably more cold than a 1 gal size. If you look at Mattys and Geoff Steins posts, they are providing whats needed(others are too, just using these as examples) Comments like"my stuff looks great" will certainly end up on the editing room floor. ~3 year old seedling in 2g citrus pot in shade house. Slight dark splotches during the December 2006 on fronds partially exposed under shade cloth. Spots disappeared after a few days. Temp measured under shade cloth 24F. Three days in mid-20's. Jan 2007, low @18" two feet away was 15.8F. Multiple days with upper teens. Initially unprotected, except for shade cloth for several days. After reading mid-teens, I threw a light blanket over it. Minor dark splotches, same as Dec. 2006 freeze. No serious damage so far.

OK folks, I've been in Texas for a few weeks, chilling my bones for a while, but I've been watching the pending gloom and doom for the first week of '08 in FL. Not saying I want to see the damage, but let's start seeing the results. Here's to a warmer rest of 2008... Ken.
