Burning/spotting/yellowing up to 20-40% on trees in ground 15g to 20' size. Similar damage to 15g potted trees with blanket around trunk. Still working on the temp numbers, but 16 out of 18 days below freezing. Most days 12+ hours below freezing, rebounding to mid-40's. Official lows in Madera and Fresno in low 20's. Some frost every day, but nowhere near as heavy as normal 28-32F freezes. No overhead canopy.

2018 freeze in central Florida 1 2

Worried all night about my royals, foxtail, Alexander, and robellinii’s from last nights freeze, wasn’t overly concerned with my duo headed sago which pulled thru well. Have to say that I’m impressed of how the Alexander, the foxtail and robellinii’s pulled thru undamaged. The royals on the other hand has some burnt foliage which I sort of expected but the palms themselves survived. We’re expecting one more freeze tonight and I’ll have my fingers crossed. By the way, my t-stat here in Deltona was at 31° at 6:10 am. The weather Channel has us expected to be a low 29° tonight.

Dypsis pembana, 2 gallon size plant, in ground, 2 feet tall to tip of new spear. 24.1F, no frost, planted under a Queen Palm and next to a hedge, covered with a sheet. No immediate damage/burn. This palm normally shows some spotting during winter, which it's been doing for several weeks due to the ongoing cold.

My Arenga, growing open and exposed and getting a LOT of summer sun, looks toasted???? I thought it was hardy? I know, it prefers shade, but that was where there was room and the palms nearby will need to grow up to shade it. It was REALLY exposed to lots of frost as it is wide open and in a drain. 27.8 F was the lowest but it was below freezing for 10+ hours in that area. Should I move it come spring? I'm bummed! Greg

Pygmy date palm
by Blake johnson- 12 replies

I live in southern Georgia (zone 8b) and have my first Pygmy date palm that is fairly large. This winter of 2015 had a light maybe 1hr of snowing with temps getting to exactly 32 degrees. My Pygmy date palm was covered with about 3 old bed sheets and rapped in Christmas lights but still got severely burned during the cold. The fronds are now solid brown but the newest ones nearest to the spear still have some green. Will my palm survive?

Livistona nitida
by Jon T- 14 replies

Kind of toasted after two 14-degree lows and several 8b nights, plus lots of low 20s. Had thin sheets on each of the three three-footers sometimes, but they were blown off at various times, often all night. I'd call it heavy to severe damage, though the spears and just-opening leaves are only moderately damaged. Gotta say that they looked pretty good until it started to drop below 20 -- maybe a little better than my l. australis and chinensis. DL. decipiens/decora is actually about the same as nitida, and doesn't look so bad comparatively, since half the fronds were frayed and straw-like even before the cold. Jon T.

0000 - Cold Hardiness Observation Master Data 1 2
by kinzyjr- 3 followers

- 9.3k views
Overview The PalmTalk forums contain thousands of observations on the cold tolerance from a variety of locations and climates. One of the primary difficulties in determining cold hardiness of a particular species or variety of palm is that observations vary greatly, even at the same temperature in the same location. Therefore, hardiness can be more accurately expressed as a probability rather than in absolutes. The goal of the attached list is to more accurately calculate the probability and degree of damage one could expect from a freeze on a particular species or variety of palm by consolidating the available data into one document. This list is provided …

In January of 2009 I had three back-to-back nights with low temperatures that read: 27, 23.5, and 27F. My small African oil palm was totally defoliated. This palm, without a doubt, is the best palm I'm currently growing that comes back so well and fast from a total defoliation. Further, this palm doesn't exhibit the typical stunting of fronds as so many other species do (first 1-3 fronds, until they finally return to normal size).

Zone 8b Woes

Hey! new to the site and not really sure where to begin: finally decided to just make a general post about cold hardiness with palms in NW FL zone 8b. My botanical interests started when I fell in love with the lush northern canopy trees living in Illinois. Moving back to Northern Florida (where I had lived as a child) though, my interest in growing palm trees just took off. After moving back in 2007, I have had a long list of palm and tropical plant endeavor's with many of which never pulled through brutal zone 8b winters. Here's some detailed experience I've had with some "hot" species that are attempted to be grown here frequently. Chinese Fan Palm: F…

AAAA...not so fast

Bossy Bob here again... I'm starting to see damage on palms that I thought were going to be OK. My big Rav Glauca is now just starting to show damage, and a Pritchardia that was on the south side of my house next to my constantly used and warm chimney, is starting to fold. Three days ago, these palms looked perfect... Please be thorough, and if need be, edit your posts to reflect final damage. I'm waiting to share my data when damage shows in its final stage. Remember, this is a thread dedicated to gathering cold damage data, and we may not(hopefully)have the opportunity to compile such important data anytime soon. So, please update damage as needed...

AAA Florida General Palm Hardiness Data

This was found posted on a website and summarizes a lot of cold hardiness data. Reposting this here for general availability. reprinted from "The Palmateer" Dec., 1999 My main purpose in tackling this particular subject is to demonstrate to palm growers (the hobbyist & the commercial grower alike) the vast array of palms that can be grown with a little effort in central Florida. However it is necessary to preface a subject this "all encompassing" with a few of the obvious disclaimers, the first being micro-climates : lakes and other waterways to the north or north west of our gardens, tall plants that can provide windbreaks and large oak trees or other eve…

For some reason I have aquired at least 5 of these from good 1 gal size to hefty 5's. Some sheet covered, some not. 4 nights under 30F, 2 of those at 26F can't see any damage. Small ones seem more susceptable to root rot than cold...

2-ft. 5g Rhapis multifida (multiple stems, > 10) upslope from a measurement station recording 28.1 deg F on a hillside in Menlo Park (CA). Exposed to sky. No damage. I've heard that these palms can take sub-20 deg. F.
