18F in north Florida w/ heavy frost. Event was unusual as it was preceded by an extended warm period of over two weeks with several days reaching highs into the 80s(F). Plant showed no damage. Plant is small, not showing its blue color yet and is located in a well drained raised bed. Interestingly, a few Trachycarpus wagnerianus plants located nearby lost their spears (all have recovered) during this event.

I have a small 2.5' B hapala that was directly below one remote sensor that is 5' of the ground. It is against a north facing wall with canopy from treeferns and Ch tepijilote. Not sure how cold it was at ground level under the canopy but the sensor at 5' read 29 degrees. Just checked it again 1 week after freeze and there is no damage to any of the leaves. Will post a pic tommorrow when there is good light.

Great Florida freeze of 2010, multiple nights below freezing with ultimate low of around 20 degrees but in a somewhat protected location next to my pond. Leaves of larger plant look ok but spear pulled and leaves of strap leafed plant are 75% toasted. Reasonably sure the larger plant will pull through (at least I hope -Krishna

Well it's late spring now so I think it's safe to say no latent damage. Palm is roughly 3' tall, less than a foot of trunk. Put in the ground last summer. A week of sub-freezing temps (only got above 32 for 3 hours in a seven day period). Ultimate low 16f. The only protection it had, was that I piled snow around the growth point on the coldest night (16f). ZERO DAMAGE, even to the fronds that were not insulated in snow, fully exposed, not even overhead cover. A couple months later we had 3 or 4 nights in a row that got down into the low twenties and even one night down to 17f. This time no snow and again ZERO DAMAGE. This species seem…

Butia Freeze Damage In Virginia (12°F)
by PalmTreeDude- 9 replies

So we got down to 12°F a few days ago and now it has warmed up and we are currently in the low 60s and yesterday was in the low 60s as well. My Butia bought simply as a "Pindo Palm" from Lowes in the Spring shows little damage so far. The only damage I can see is a bit of browning on parts of the oldest leaves and a spot here or there on the "middle aged" leaves. The newest ones look fine so far. I will keep everyone updated, but I expected to see more damage and sooner. One of my other smaller ones got burned pretty badly, about 60% defoliation. As for the one that is showing little signs of damage, I must have gotten a pretty tough one. None of my palms were given any p…

Although there is some data in the topic Butia/Jubaea X Syagrus, it is unclear whether it involves the hybrids BJxS or JBxS. This topic is for the hybrid BJxQ (B x J) x Q. The Butia involved is either a mutt or odorata. Ten gallon under Acacia (high and open canopy). Some light bronzing to newer fronds from 26.4°F after 2 weeks. Butia/Jubaea X Syagrus

This is a 3 way cross and is in a 5 gal container. Last year it grew extreamly fast and I moved it from a 4 inch liner to a 5 gal pot. It looks like a Butiagrus cross, but has a heavier texture. At 25F I chickened and moved it in my unheated pool bar. I only have one and didn't want to risk it. It will go in the ground in this spring. I expect it will take much lower than 25 F. Dick
