0000 - Cold Hardiness Observation Master Data 1 2
by kinzyjr- 3 followers

- 9.4k views
Overview The PalmTalk forums contain thousands of observations on the cold tolerance from a variety of locations and climates. One of the primary difficulties in determining cold hardiness of a particular species or variety of palm is that observations vary greatly, even at the same temperature in the same location. Therefore, hardiness can be more accurately expressed as a probability rather than in absolutes. The goal of the attached list is to more accurately calculate the probability and degree of damage one could expect from a freeze on a particular species or variety of palm by consolidating the available data into one document. This list is provided …

Southeast Baltimore County Lowest Annual Temperatures (Past 20 Years)
by LasPalmerasDeMaryland- 3 replies

So being the palm dweeb that I am, last night I was researching the lowest annual temperatures for Baltimore (my hometown) and I realized that the lowest temperatures were recorded at BWI airport. The airport is cooler than my location and I was curious what the same temperatures were in areas closer to me. So on the days where the lowest temperatures were recorded, I searched the temperatures at the weather stations closest to me and these were my findings for the past 20 years: 2019: 8° 2018: 5° 2017: 12° 2016: 12° 2015: 4° 2014: 6° 2013: 15° 2012: 15° 2011: 15° 2010: 16° 2009: 10° 2008: 16° 2007: 12° 2006: 16° 2005: 13° 2004: 8° 2…

Butia Freeze Damage In Virginia (12°F)
by PalmTreeDude- 9 replies
- 1.8k views
So we got down to 12°F a few days ago and now it has warmed up and we are currently in the low 60s and yesterday was in the low 60s as well. My Butia bought simply as a "Pindo Palm" from Lowes in the Spring shows little damage so far. The only damage I can see is a bit of browning on parts of the oldest leaves and a spot here or there on the "middle aged" leaves. The newest ones look fine so far. I will keep everyone updated, but I expected to see more damage and sooner. One of my other smaller ones got burned pretty badly, about 60% defoliation. As for the one that is showing little signs of damage, I must have gotten a pretty tough one. None of my palms were given any p…

We have had some cold nights recently. Last night was the coldest, getting down to 37.5 early this morning under a clear sky with a cold Santa Ana blowing. It seemed that a bit before dawn when it was the coldest, the wind stopped before kicking back up again right at dawn. I couldn't help noticing some damage to my Dypsis scottiana which was planted in 2018. It is in a slightly protected area, between my detached garage and a patio cover with the Dypsis pembana (trunks behind it) providing some overhead protection in the area open to the sky. It was extremely dry last night as well, so no frost forming.

when a frond grows part way out and then stalls...
by Sandy Loam- 5 replies

I have a pseudophoenix sargentii that was badly damaged during this past January 2018 freeze, here in Gainesville, Florida, USA. We had two bad freezes this January, back to back. The spear will not pull out. The post-freeze frond grew part way out in roughly March, yet it simply stalled and only made it about five or six inches out of the bud area. This palm has not grown since then. Is it dead? Should I continue to wait while it just sits there stunted? The partial frond is perfectly green. Realistically, nobody should be growing pseudophoenix sargentii north of Orlando, but I decided to do so anyway. I was aware of the risks when I took on this e…

Freeze Damage update
by The Real Tree Doctor- 0 replies

Just wanted to add a little information above freezing conditions for palm trees . Many people talk about palms that are freeze hardy and they seem to ignore the problems created by stress from freezing conditions on any tropical plant. Stress that is unusual to any palm can attract many different insect problems to the palm. These insects may not kill them immediately, but several years later the palm can die. I have a nice triangle with about a foot or less of clean trunk just put it in the ground about 4 months ago. Noticed over the Last week or so the trunks becoming soft. We have had a good amount of rain but other then that I cant think of a change. Ideas? Is it doomed? I'd love to keep it but shopping for a replacement isnt the worst thing in the world. some pics to come

Texas Freeze Damage Question
by westbay- 3 replies
Last winter after Hurricane Harvey we had a bad freeze in Galveston. It damaged my Bismarkia and Queen palm. The Bismarkia is fine now but the Queen palm isn't. It put out two fronds out about half way and then more new fronds are a foot long or less. The two larger fronds are turning brown at the tips and no getting any longer. I think everything is stuck. Is the such a thing as "crown crowding" or something and what can I do?

2018 Freeze - South Carolina

Now that it's July I wanted to report in on losses and survivors in the January 2018 freeze. I had 5-6 consecutive nights below 20F, with absolute lows of 14F and 13F. Highs in the low-mid 30's. All plants fully exposed, no canopy unless noted. Ground froze to at least 2-3" in many areas of the yard. Most of the results are somewhat expected, I did not protect anything as the severity of the freeze caught me off guard (it was forecast for low-mid 20's here). Palms in the ground: Butia odorata (mature) Silver form, 50% defoliated. (5-7 gal) - Smaller silver Butia 50-100% defoliated but survived without aid. Many seedlings were killed. Butia sp. (5 ga…

A two-three year old plant approximately 2-feet tall to top of frond succumbed to 36 consecutive hours below freezing with an ultimate low of 17F. The palm was under live oak canopy. The spear pulled and all fronds were brown approximately 2 weeks after the cold weather event. Approximately 1 month later at the oncoming of spring, I cut into the stem and found the green growing point. I removed all dead material and treated with hydrogen peroxide. A new spear began to grown, but aborted after about 1 week and expired.

Thoughts on a Sylvester post freeze
by PoolPalm_AB- 7 replies

HI all - wanted to get some folks thoughts on a Sylvester date palm that I planted about a year ago around a new pool in north Houston. Before winter hit, it looked like things were going well and tree was getting established. Then came winter... coldest we've seen in the past decade here. All my palms which were planted at the same time last year took it pretty hard.... lost a lot of leaves on my 3 mule palms but they've come back strong and green. My two Sylvesters took it the worst with both basically losing all of their leaves. One has started to come back (attached a picture and you can see the green crown coming out). The other is not looking good and this is…

Help, please: what is the recommended application mix-ratio for Captan 50WP for bud-drench, trunk and trunk-base-root treatment for post-frost-damage/cool-wet-spring fungus avoidance? I have been told to alternate two treatments of copper and Captan. The Copper (SouthernAg liquid concentrate) has the mix rate, but the Captan 50WP (AgriStar) does not. Many forums recommend the Captan for prophylactic fungus treatment for the Mexican Fan Palm, but none of the manufacturers* have a mix rate on the label for palms - only for fruit and ornamentals. Two local palm sellers recommended the minimum mix ratio on the label. Also: Any position on the efficacy of hydrogen peroxi…

Only about 20% damage from 28f. Performed much better than D. lutescens and D. pembana by comparison. I had always heard these are intolerant of the cold, but my experience shows it performs reasonably well. Additional info can be found here: http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?/topic/55520-2018-freeze-in-central-florida/&do=findComment&comment=834723

Multiple potted specimens, about 9 inches tall, low of 31.5˚, no frost: The ones in with full sun after about 8 am (so no sun during the morning frost) have minimal leaf damage but spear browning and turning soft, but still actively growing (suggesting that it's alive). The ones in all day shade have about 80% browning of the leaves with spear browning as well. A P. pacifica seedling in the location with full sun after 8 am shows extensive leaf damage, so I'd say that P. thurstonii seems a bit hardier.

2018 freeze in central Florida 1 2

Worried all night about my royals, foxtail, Alexander, and robellinii’s from last nights freeze, wasn’t overly concerned with my duo headed sago which pulled thru well. Have to say that I’m impressed of how the Alexander, the foxtail and robellinii’s pulled thru undamaged. The royals on the other hand has some burnt foliage which I sort of expected but the palms themselves survived. We’re expecting one more freeze tonight and I’ll have my fingers crossed. By the way, my t-stat here in Deltona was at 31° at 6:10 am. The weather Channel has us expected to be a low 29° tonight.

Encephalartos ferox

20f, completely defoliated both of these with ease. I have seen burn on ferox begin at 28f and any frost or ice will burn them. These plants took 16f last year unprotected and didnt die. However one only had one abnormal flush that looked like it was close to death. Both have basketball size caudices.
