Continued issues after Texas snow & ice storms

Need some serious help and advice, please!!!! 2/21 Texas Snow storm. I got 6” of snow that stayed on ground and kept us in the dark for a week. I lost all 6 of my 30’ Mexican Fan palms. Serious damage to 3 smaller ones, 2 - 15’ Pendos and 3 other hardier Texas trees. i can’t get a break, 2023 we got an ice storm. I have since since lost two of the three smaller (4-5’) Mexican fan palms that showed initial new growth of 2’ fan stilll not opened and then all of a sudden the fan just fell over and turned brown. In pic 1 is my last fan palm. It too is still struggling. If i get a fan, it turns brown. I originally planted them in 2009, but since snow and …

Only about 20% damage from 28f. Performed much better than D. lutescens and D. pembana by comparison. I had always heard these are intolerant of the cold, but my experience shows it performs reasonably well. Freeze Damage update

Just wanted to add a little information above freezing conditions for palm trees . Many people talk about palms that are freeze hardy and they seem to ignore the problems created by stress from freezing conditions on any tropical plant. Stress that is unusual to any palm can attract many different insect problems to the palm. These insects may not kill them immediately, but several years later the palm can die. 15G, burned severely 23.6F under shade cloth Feb/March 2006, but recovered. Was brought in after the first (advective) night of the freeze ~22-23F. Similar damage as 2006, but as the temps warmed up it started losing "trunks". I was holding out hope with the radicalis genes, but it seems to see damage similar to potted seifrizii. Toast now.

Full sun by fence for years 2 of them . At cold I do protect w sheets or maybe light but even when I didn’t it recover just fine. The reason I like to protect because I don’t want to take chances and also it gets fuller as they don’t get any damage im in Jacksonville Florida at Pulaski exit

Beccariophoenix alfredii

Well from my experience of germinating seeds of Beccariophoenix alfredii, the soil needs temperatures in the high 20s to 30s, for it to germinate. After sprouting, the soil high temperature still needs to be maintained to develop the rooting systems and the first leaf. Soil temps in the teens will stop early growth.

Pictures from an all time low of 0.5F in Sarepta Louisiana. I wrapped them up with blankets and a tarp/trash bags. The small Sabals I covered with 3 gallon pots and a 10 lbs weight. They have obvious sign of burn. So far all center spears are good. Thanks for all the good advice to keep it dry on the front end. I believe that was the difference for survival in what is called a 100 year storm.

So far, this appears to be a fairly hardy palm for So Cal. I had a small 1 gal sit outside ALL winter in a pot (only brought in when I thought might reach mid 30's, about 4-5 times) It regularly saw high 30's, and although slow, continues to plug along! I do know of a larger one at Matt P's and it is in the ground and growing...

RAPHIA AUSTRALIS

A robust seedling, almost 3' tall, growing in a pot, after persistent cold weather and many nights and days with temperatures steadily below 8C / 46F, but no actual freeze (the lowest it got was around 1.5C / 34.5F), finally succumbed to the cold. Better said, it was completely toasted. So, not cold hardy at all, at least as a seedling in pot culture.

Chamaerops Humilis, 15 degree hard freeze.

So far, we have had a colder than normal winter in South Mississippi. We saw 15 degrees F in early January. I know it's not over. I have over 100 sabal palms, both S. Louisiana and S. Palmetto. 8 of the S. Palmettos are over 20 feet tall. The larger sabals have gone dormant, and there is a bit of a singe on the tips of the fronds, not unusual. The rest are totally unfazed. I have 3 Chamaerops; the largest is about 6 feet tall. They all have some freeze damage. The lower fronds are all brown and about 1/3 of the upper fronds have some browning. These palms saw 9 degrees F one winter and were totally defoliated, but usually they will hang on to their fronds down t…

The one in my backyard was protected for both freezes, but it was protected differently for each one. The first one, which saw a low of 18.1F, it was fully protected. The second, which saw a low of 23F, had only the trunk and spear area protected. The fronds were left out in the open. The fronds have shown no sign of cold damage, not even spotting. Will continue to monitor and provide updates as needed. I protected it in some way for both freezes as the cold hardiness with these is not widely known. As it gets bigger ill allow it to be exposed to deeper freezes to experiment.
