Mile Markers

Take the virtual road trip (see mostly historic photos at many Keys) and then check out the Photo Search album for more than 900 mostly historic photos of the Florida Keys. I noticed my old navy ship, Howard W. Gilmore AS-16, that I was stationed on at Key West is in the album as well as many more. That was some good duty there in Key West. Too bad I didn't appreciate it more at the time. Website has short "intro" before menu comes up. http://www.mile-markers.org/

The wife and I headed for Geyserville to celebrate our anniversary last Thursday. We were going to spend the first night with family in Walnut Creek. We arrived 2 hours early, so Carol asked if I there was anything I wanted to do before dinner when we were expected. I called information and decided to look up our own PalmGuyWC. The operator gave me 2 phone numbers, and I got the right guy the first time. Dick graciously said to come on over. My sister-in-law was also curious and joined us.

PSSC meeting and SoCal PRAs
by iwan- 26 replies

My wife and I spent a few days down in San Diego to attend the PSSC meeting, see palms, and just hang out. While I was checking out the gardens and socializing, my wife (the real photographer in the family) snapped pictures (not necessarily of palms). I love these. They look like rows of little birds.

Trip to the local plant show in Manila 1 2 3

Actually more on the commercial section than anything. It was The Orchid Show so I didn't really go there for the exhibit -- and even if the commercial stalls were mostly geared towards flowers and orchids some palms and other interseting stuff gets thrown in in the mix. General view going in.

El Sereno Idyll

Howdyall: I know Jack and Lindsay live in El Screamo now, and I've been departed for five years this month . . . But it was a happy home for me and thousands of palms for nearly five years before that, from Jan. 1, 1998 to October of 2002. Some of you might remember. And, before I lived there from 1998 to 2002, I lived there in 1992 when I started law school. I lived at this house, 2828 Phelps avenue. Note how steep those steps are.

Jacksonville, FL "Palmfest 2007"

See Christians thread under "Discussing Palm Trees Worldwide" for photos and story. You would be surprised at the palms they are growing there. The variegated Needle Palm impressed me the most, along with variegated specimens of other plants. Even though it rained everyday, it didn't stop this group of palm people from seeing what the area had to offer.

So I will be leaving for south beach exactly a week from now. I will mainly be in Miami for the nightlife and beaches, but I would also like to check out some of the palms in the area. The main problem here, is that I will not have a rental car. My hotel will be in northern south beach. I'd like to know what I should check out that is in the general area. Thanks!!

Studio 5 Mall
by amazondk- 5 replies

I went into the Studio 5 Mall here in Manaus the other day to get some money from an ATM and took the side entrance which has a bridge over a very nice natural looking garden. The area has a natural spring and contains a nice grove of Euterpe olearcea and precatoria, some Oenocarpus and other native plants. The bridge is around 15 to 20 feet off the ground and is a great little walk. I guess Manaus is really a tropical place and this garden makes you feel it. Side of the mall mirrowed windows. Side View of the garden with some nice Euterpe precatorias.

Visit to the Philippines
by Don Little- 36 replies

I just concluded a two week vacation with my wife and her family to Cebu City, Philippines. Our main reason for going was to vacation and to visit family, but of course what would a trip to the Philippines be (where just about any palm can grow) with out some palm pics. Unfortunately because of the busy schedule and the fact that driving in the Philippines makes the the craziest traffic here look tame, getting around to specificaly go palm spotting is a challenge. Because of this, most of my pics are Palms were either taken while driving or at the resort where we stayed. There were many species that I saw but was unable to photograph. This first pic is of my wife…

A quick business trip to Eastern BoliviaL 1 2

Last Wednesday through Friday I took a a quick trip to the Eastern Bolivian provinces of Pando and Beni. I went with our customer from the States to check out sources of FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Certified wood for some projects of his. Bolivia has the largest area of Certified tropical forests in the world. These forests are concessions granted to local businessmen for sustainable forestry. By being FSC Certified a company has an external audit to assure proper forestry practices. This mechanism assures that the forest is harvested in a sustainable manner and that the local people are also benefited from the activitiy. The area we went to see belongs to a gen…

Howdyall: Howdy especially to BS, Kim, Scott, Matt in SD and everyone else! I didn't make it epicure's garden because I got a late start, and I onlygot as far as Encinitas on the I-5 freeway by 2:30. The Arnold's garden was, as advertised atop a hill in Poway, on 19 acres, and the view was breathaking.

Another PSSC Meeting thread

Just keeping it fresh like Palm Juice Juice! We started off at John Shearson's (epicure3) place in the Torrey Hills area of San Diego. I noticed the difference between 2 queen palms. The robust leaflet variety and the not so robust leaflets variety. I wish you could tell the difference when they're young. John's Spathodea tree was in full bloom and beautiful. I hope some of you other's with better camera got some nice shots. Some bromeliads in flower. End of summer is a great time for a palm tour. Pohonkelapa making his way back to the back yard.....or is he just posing again. ???

PSSC 9/22 (Uncut version)
by Kim- 33 replies

I left my house in the pouring rain, but magically, the sun emerged at the freeway exit to John Shearson's house. Blooms of Portea petropolitana var. 'extensa' greet visitors at the front walk. Wanda and her DH puzzle over a palm ID: Next to said palm, flowers of a Spathodea campanulata captivated visitors: A chattering fountain occupies a shade garden across from the front entry: Wow! If the front is this packed with beauty, what's hiding behind the house?

Surf and Palms
by Gileno Machado- 10 replies
- 1.2k views
Spring/early summer is usually the best season for surfing in front of my house. The predominant wind changes to a more southeast direction, avoinding the protection of the natural reef barrier and the waves come near the shore. This is the only surf point available around here and we've had a few tournaments already in this season, otherwise the beach would be completely desert: Does anybody have any more pictures of other surfing points?

While visiting in Jakarta, I took a side trip to Bogor (~1.5 hour drive) to visit the botanical garden. I am sure some of you have been here before. I am not going to post a lot of pictures here as I am not satisfied with the picture quality. I was using a borrowed camera, since my wife took the good one with her and the palms did not photograph well against overcast mid-day sky. You can peruse the entire album if you wish. For reference, on named palms I tried to take a picture of the name before the palm, but unfortunately not always. I will make no attempt at naming unlabled palms as I am not qualified to do so. Identifications are welcome of course! Intere…

For those that live in Costa Rica or have been there, if you were to choose 2 of the following 3 places to go, which would you select: Tortuguero National Park Corcovada National Park Las Cruces - Wilson Botanical We're planning on coming to Costa Rica for the IPS 2008 Biennial in May. I am not sure where they are taking us on the biennial tours, but the above are options for "pre" and "post" tours. How much rain can we expect the 1st two weeks of May ?
