New thermometer recommendations
by RedRabbit- 8 replies
What do you guys suggest for a new thermometer? Here’s what I’m looking for: - Accurate - Has max/min readout - Ideally, connects to Wunderground or has some other data recording. - Don’t want to pay extra for an anemometer, I don’t have a decent place to install one and the HOA would probably throw a fit. Davis are great, but they’re overkill for my purposes. My last thermometer was a simple Acurite one that connected to Wunderground. It only cost something like $60, but it did the job. Unfortunately, they stopped selling this model. I know you guys are weather experts so I’m curious what you all would recommend.

by bubba- 0 replies

DewPoint’s of note around the Continental United States ranged from 82°F in Miami Dade near Kendall with most of Florida in the mid to lower 70s. Lower Louisiana averaged approximately 67°F. The lower Texas coast at Laguna vista had the highest at 75°F but had dropped to 46°F by Rio Grande City. The Texas coast through Houston averaged lower 70s° Fahrenheit to San Antonio, which averaged lower 60°F to El Paso at 7°F. Moving westward, Tucson was 15°F, Phoenix was 28°F, Yuma was 41°F, La Quinta was 33°F, Santa Monica/LA was 49°F and San Diego was 51°F. Honolulu was 63°F and Key West was 77°F. Brief sweep globally, I saw 81°F at a Brazilian location in th…

UK Winter 2022/23 & rainy season
by UK_Palms- 1 reply

I figure I better do a thread for this coming winter so that I am not clogging up the 'what is your current yard temperature' thread again. So far it has been incredibly mild and almost summer-like at times. The rain and unsettled windier conditions have arrived though as the Atlantic oceanic influence has reestablished, taking over from the high pressure, subtropical ridging associated with the Azores high and Csb conditions in southern England. No sign of any cold potential though yet, assuming we even get any this coming winter. ECMWF has temps pushing 26-27C / 80F on Halloween in London and southeast England. A far cry from the weather that we used to experience …

New Toy Sunlight and Temp Logger
by D. Morrowii- 0 replies

I was looking for a way to get accurate light measurements for fun and for just nerding out on palms . I found these pretty cool data loggers from Onset/HOBO They have some expensive serious stuff but they have these little pendant loggers that you can just bluetooth to your phone as well. The little device can log once a minute for 37 days or so. It exports to .csv .xcel or .png. I got a light and temp pendant MX2202. $80 isn’t cheap but not too terrible either. This data is for a B. condopanna living under a banana plant. I’m logging data for a C. nucele this week to see how much light its taking. North America Monsoon 2023: The unknown, & Stranger Things... Pt #1

It's that time of year again when the Southwestern U.S and N.W. Mexico enters the best season here.. The heat, towering walls of dust ..Lightning filled evenings, and humid, Hawaii-esque mornings.. That time of year when somewhat boring dry and thirsty landscapes are magically brought to life and can resemble places far wetter than one would assume.. Unlike prior years, i'm breaking this year's Monsoon thread into 2 parts: ....The here and now, and some personal thoughts on what may lie further out on the horizon.. Some interesting insight on what plants can tell us about weather patterns at certain times of the year as well.. Starting things off... …

Best Caryota for Zone 9b
by Ezekial- 3 replies
Hello, I live In Inland Southern California and would like to grow a type of Caryota. Where I am temps in the high 90s sometimes low hundreds are not uncommon but winters are mild (low 40s at most usually) and most of the time get decent rain for here. My question is which type of Caryota would do best in the climate? I cant put it in full or partial sun. I really want Caryota urens cause of the speed of growth (I’m not very patient) 😂

Sparta vs Cordoba
by southathens- 4 replies
Could Cordoba in Andalusia, Spain lose in the near future its title as Europe's hottest summer mean max location to Sparta in the Evrotas Valley, Greece? Below you can check Cordoba's summer mean maxes And here is Sparta So here is a hypothesis: As you can already see Cordoba stands at 36.9C mean max for the hottest month, while Sparta stands at 36.0C. However Cordoba's data come from a passive Stevenson Screen station while Sparta's come from a fan aspirated station. Here in Greece due to our extremely rich fan aspirated stations network from the National Observatory of Athens we have noticed that when we run parallel comparisons with passive SS …

California heat wave breaking
by DoomsDave- 1 reply

California seeks energy conservation for 10th day in heat wave (msn.com) This has been a baddie. Other heat waves have been hotter, but a lot shorter. In Sept. 2020 I had about 112 F on Labor Day weekend (and a lot of people bought palms anyway!) but it was only a couple-three days. This time it's been hot since Sept. 1 with no letup yet. Supposedly that 'cane from Mexico will cool things down, but we'll see. Any one have any heat wave stories?

Help me understand this!

This fall, I got a weather station in my yard. I am at the bottom of a river valley in the desert, and my neighborhood is full of large trees (cottonwoods, pecans, ash trees, cypresses, etc.) because the groundwater is so close to the surface. Many of these trees are not on irrigation and they look beautiful. Anyways - because we're in this valley (and in the desert) the cold air seems to sink down to my property. I find that every night, I am between 28F and 33F. What's unusual, though, is that my temperatures appear inversely related to the rest of Wickenburg. In the morning, when I check my station, I check the local Weather Underground ones also. What I…

Winterizing contradictions
by Than- 16 replies
I am considering winterizing methods and I read lots of advice online. However, some of them seem to contradict each other. Can anyone help me clear the mental fog? 1. Cover plants under tall evergreen trees to stop frost from falling on plants and also to trap heat VS use deciduous trees so that sun rays can pass through in the winter and warm plants up. 2. Mulch the soil around the soil to insulate it VS keep soil clear because it absorbs heat during the day and releases it during the night. 3. Keep the soil dry during cold spells to avoid freezing the roots VS water the plants because wet soil absorbs much more heat (again, if there is mulch on it, how c…
