Anyone here from the Colorado River area?
by Desertlife4me- 8 replies

Hello everyone, I have always been a fan of palm trees, bamboo and tropical plants. I was born and raised in Seattle where I started a palm nursery in my back yard, I had over 400 Chinese Windmill palms growing.....had to get rid of them when I moved. Now I live in Arizona, Mohave Valley along the Colorado River. Elevation is 500ft +/- and growing zone 9B/10A, we get sub-freezing temps, but not a hard/deep freeze and not for very long, usually just a few min-to hours just before and just after dawn. Soil conditions are a mix of clay and sand, very few rocks. Our water table is just 15 feet down or so and the well water has salt (about 1200ppm) along with calciu…

length of nightly cool down and plants
by flplantguy- 1 follower

Like the title says, Im wondering about the length of time a given location reaches its low (high) temp for the night (day) and the effect on plants in the garden. If the time is only minutes (like a light freeze) does it have any effect at all? If a plant likes cool nights and its warmer before a small drop at sunrise can you even count it? We average out numbers for plants in heating and cooling degree days for this purpose but its more for farming and less for plant microclimate. In Florida inland locations cool more than the coast and warmer nights are an issue on the water, but what about the adjacent lands that hit lower temps for short periods? How does that ef…

Recommendation on thermometers
by chad2468emr- 2 replies

Hi all, Hope this isn't too off-topic for this section, but it seems to be the most appropriate area. Does anyone have any recommendations for an outdoor thermometer setup that will allow me to record daily highs + lows from two different sensors easily that are accurate and under $50 total? I feel like that's a reasonable price point, but let me know if I'm wrong. I've had a hard time finding anything online that reviewers seem to consistently state has been observed to be accurate. You all understand more than most that 33 degrees vs 32 degrees makes a large difference even if just for 1 hour between 5:00 am - 6:00 am, and I need to know that my thermometer …

Cold air drainage and Abq's "Box"
by SailorBold- 0 replies

With cooler Fall-like weather moving in and the growing season coming to a close I thought I would share a video form the Weather Channel explaining a local weather phenomenon known as the "Albuquerque Box". This phenomenon is related to cold air drainage in a valley setting during colder mornings which in turn effect air currents/movements. The local balloon fiesta wrapped up last weekend with near perfect weather for balloon launches... this video gives a visual representation of how colder and warmer air moves around during the colder times of the year. At any rate... What is interesting to me is how low a cold air pocket is to the ground..and how the balloons hel…

I 've been in the blue areas before ( above ) when much of the world map was in showing warmer than average temperatures for certain years . My ultimate Low may not have been that bad but I was very cool during past periods , with late springs and nasty wet winters . I'll take this for a change , and hope it pans out .

Cold Beginning to 2010, but Moderation in site

Well the results for the first 3 months of 2010 are here. It's been real cold. So far I've lost only 2 palms: Phoenix rupicola and Ravenea rivularis. Neither is a big loss. More may die as we get into the season of rot when heat and humidity encourage composters to attack weakend palms. Hopefully it won't be an issue! Anyway, here's the note from the National Weather Service (sorry, temps are in F). [i]... New record set for consecutive days below 80 degrees at the Jacksonville International Airport... ... Still remains the coldest start to a calendar year in Jacksonville climate history... Today... Monday March 29th... Marks 104 consecutive days wit…

Accuracy of NWS Data

This will be a long post, but I'm hoping someone can help me resolve my cognitive dissonance. Once upon a time, @kinzyjr pointed me to an interesting tool through NOAA where I could select a station and have the historical data delivered to my e-mail. This was when I had thought I was moving. Turns out I never moved, which is good because I have 100+ palms, cacti, trees and other interesting plants in the ground that I didn't want to leave behind. Anyways, through some perusing on that site, I discovered there is a weather station less than a half mile from my house, at nearly the exact same elevation, that has over 100 years of weather records. "Interesting …

Regarding the tornado in the Tampa area yesterday, the National Weather Service rated it an EF2 in Pinellas County, and an EF1 into Hillsborough and Polk Counties. Hope everything is okay! @kinzyjr is everything alright there? https://twitter.com/NWSTampaBay/status/1339650213305176064

On this day in 2011, 62 tornadoes struck the state of Alabama. 252 people died in the state of Alabama that day. I do not remember anything personally from that day as i was still quite young at the time, but looking back at this event, it scares me to think that something like this will happen again. The big question is, where will it happen? Here is a video, that i recommend you watch, from James Spann himself. Never forget this day, never forget the people who died, never forget the families that are still feeling the impact TO THIS DAY. The impact doesnt just last for a few years, it lasts a lifetime.

Is the climate of Dallas closer to Minneapolis or to Miami?

This same topic was made and exploded on the ol' City-Data Weather: https://www.city-data.com/forum/weather/3375676-climate-dallas-more-similar-climate-minneapolis.html Emman85 (a member both there and here) participated quite a bit, but to my knowledge no one else on here did, so I figured to make it here because you folks here on Palmtalk might find it of interest. Not just for the comparison between the climates, but for its overlap in premise with much discussed climates on here. Here's the comparison and contrast that overlaps what we discussed. "Dallas may not have continental winter temperatures but it does get continental winter patterns and can …

Up here along the northern Gulf Coast, ive been getting waves of soaking rain, temperatures in the upper 70's to low 80's for highs since March. Well, looking at models that will probably change this weekend going into next week. So here is the situation, a ridge of high pressure is expected to set up over the Southeast US, this will bring on the Summer heat for everyone in the SE, and possibly higher than normal summer time heat. Most of the models that i can view that go out into next week are currently showing an 8+ day heat event, with temperatures from South Florida to the Carolinas reaching the triple digits. The 12z run of the GFS even showed 107F west of Jacksonvi…

Backyard Microclimates

Do you live near a large mountain or hill that helps keep temperatures warmer? Do you live next to a large body of water that keeps temperatures warmer? Have you planted tall windblocking evergreen trees in your backyard? Do you have other backyard features to help keep it warmer? If so... Post a Picture! I want some ideas an data on what works and what doesn't work to squeeze out ever 1 degree of more warmth I can. I live near some hills and a river runs through my city. I'm debating on if it would make sense to get a house near the river or at the base of the hill to help have a warmer backyard. Also pondering what would be the optimal backyard setup for micr…
