Coldest Winter Ever?

It looks like it is going to be a cold one and that means snow. Because we are Palmsters, we need to be aware of our record snowfalls so we can compare.I start this with US but request add-ons from all warm blooded Palmster regions world-wide. The book is for 24 hour records: (1) Hawaii-0 in the cities (2)Arizona-Yuma-1.5 inches Tucson-6.8 inches Phoenix-1.0 inches Lake Havasu-3.0 inches (3)California-Burbank-4.7 inches Death Valley-1.1 inches Los Angeles-3.0 inches Palm Springs-2.0 inches San Diego- Trace (4)Florida-Daytona-Trace …

There is alot of discussion on this Board about Zone 11. The definition of Zone 11 seems nebulous at best when it discusses "an average minimum temperature of 40 degrees F."What does that mean? The last time I remember it dropping below 40 degrees F. in this area was 1989.(Palm Beach)At anyrate, the National Arbor Day Foundation completed an extensive revision of this map ,which is available on the Wikipedia Hardiness Zone article. This article also lists the Hardiness Zones for numerous American cities. In California,San Diego,Los Angeles and San Francisco are identified as Zone 10. The only American cities designated Zone 11 are Miami,Florida and Honolulu,Hawaii. As it rel…

Freeze warning for CA 1 2 3 4

So it is interesting how just a couple days ago the models showed California being protected from the arctic air and now there is a strengthening of a high over the Atlantic, protecting the east coast. If this model holds, it is going to get bad. Probably upper 20s for some areas. Forecast lows are still 32-34 for most areas for central/northern ca but I wanted to put a warning out there just in case. I am going to start now with prep work to make sure all my stuff gets protected. Maybe it will push east or there will be some cloud cover to limit damage. Good news is January is coming soon when this crap starts pushing eastward.

It's back: El Niño expected later this year, forecasters say: https://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/topstories/its-back-el-ni%C3%B1o-expected-later-this-year-forecasters-say/ar-AAyFm39 ".... In the U.S., a strong El Niño can result in a stormy winter along the West Coast, a wet winter across the South and a warmer-than-average winter in the Pacific Northwest and northern Rocky Mountains... El Niño is a periodic natural warming of ocean water in the tropical Pacific that impacts weather in the U.S. and around the world. Globally, the climate pattern can bring dry conditions to Indonesia, the Philippines and Australia...In South America, Brazil can get drought, while Argen…

With winter coming to a close, I thought it would be interesting to know how cold it got in some of our member's yards. That's a hard question for those on hilly properties so maybe give us an average of the lowest temps. recorded on your probes. My lowest this winter was 34F.

Weird weather this winter. This a placeholder for Monday and Tuesday nights in California as a low drops down with really cold air. Today is in the 70s, by tomorrow the temps will be dropping sharply. Average date for last possible frost for my area is Jan 31st, so this is certainly freaky weather. I think it could possibly have some implications on agriculture as well since it is unusual. Currently my winter low so far was a night of 32F. Forecasts say 28 and 29! Oh well. One bonus getting hit so late is it should help with recovery once it warms up again. I didn’t want to have to clean up the bananas after a freeze since they are still up. Other than that, I …

Spring has sprung in the south 1 2 3 4

Must be my turn to start one of these threads... I'll start by mentioning our local Brisbane weather has been pretty good the last week or 2. We had a long winter that had nice enough days but the low minimum temps were the worst they have been for many years, spring has been a long time coming but it has definitely arrived. Welcome to the Southern Hemisphere spring!! Let's all hope it a good one! Our biggest risk is a dry warm spring which IMHO is quite likely??

Coldest Temps of Winter for California 1 2

California will be blasted with extremely cold temperatures into next week due to a pattern allowing Arctic air to flow easily down the West Coast. Frost and freeze warning are posted for tonight and Friday night for nearly all the coastal valleys in southern California. The wind last night gusted to over 40mph in metro Los Angeles yet the temperature still dropped to 43F\ 6.1C at my house. Tonight will not be as windy and dew points will be very low = frost for many locations. Weak storms are forecast to circulate down the trough into next week and usher in even colder air for California and the Southwest. The clouds and wind may be the only thing to save some garde…

What a winter it has been so far. We have had some of the coldest weather in recorded history. We are experiencing yet another cold snap here, with more to come. The strange thing is that our local airport has recorded both the warmest July day ever and the coldest minimum as well. This is a location about 1 kilometre from the ocean. Lucky for me so far my temps have not been as cold as the airport. Here are some stats for the month up to yesterday. Last night the airport minimum temp was 0.0C!!! regards, Daryl.
