I am spending a few days a long way from Amazonia in Great Falls, Montana. It always seems to snow when I come here and this trip has been no exception. 8 F below zero and falling. Well on Tuesday I will be back south of the equator with a bit of a different temperature. dk

Who would have thought, a polar vortex in the middle of Summer. I thought we were done with that. Highs in the 50's and lows in the low 40's for the Great Lakes. The NBC headline reads: 'Polar Vortex' Flashback? Experts Say Rare Summer Cold Front on the Way.' The Washington Post calls it the "Poorman's polar Vortex": Poor man’s polar vortex to make shocking summer return in eastern U.S. next week.

So yesterday was the Summer Solstice. Longest day of the year and the start of summer in Southern California. I woke up in the middle of the night to the sounds of rain. What a crazy year of weather we are having. But, it sounds like things are going to be heating up shortly as it is forecasted to be warmer than normal. Anyone else get rain last night?

First Frost!

First frost today here in Wickenburg, AZ. I don’t have many frost-sensitive plants, except a potted aloe species under the patio roof, so this doesn’t really effect my garden. Many of my deciduous trees were still in leaf and hadn’t turned colors yet, so it toasted a bunch of green leaves that were due to fall off sooner or later. Other than that, no meaningful impacts to the garden. Doesn’t appear we actually hit freezing - it was just very humid last night from a couple days of rain. Anyone else get frost yet? What were the impacts!?

The AP had this story, and we tend to hear quite a bit about it. Do you think it's alot of political/ News Media hype? Or do you think it's real? Scientists Predict Southwest Mega-Drought Added: Apr 8th, 2007 1:42 PM Climate models indicate region will be as dry as Dust Bowl for decades The Associated Press WASHINGTON - Changing climate will mean increasing drought in the American Southwest — a region where water already is in tight supply — according to a new study. “The bottom line message for the average person and also for the states and federal government is that they’d better start planning for a Southwest region in which the water resources are increa…

Just looked at the forecast synoptics for this week and on Thursday the north island of NZ looks like it will cop a very strong low that will just walk down the east coast of NZ and then as the system breaks up the rain will walk north from the south right up the west coast, but of course with less wind strength. It looks like a cyclone but that far south it likely will be a cold core storm system. Take care PT members in NZ over the next few days.

The western palm areas of the United States experienced a traditional December 2021 while the eastern palm areas of the United States experienced what can only be described as wildly warm. While I have not verified where this December 2021 lines up historically, I can only assume that it must be approaching Los Angeles, California Had a high maximum temperature of 69°F, a mean temperature of 55.2°F and a minimum temperature of 40°F. San Diego, California had a high maximum temperature of 70°F, a mean temperature of 55.81F and a minimum temperature of 39°F. Highest Zone / Lowest Cost

Having repeated flood control issues at the house, my wife and I are considering selling the place and moving somewhere else. Just a thought experiment at this time. Would like to stay in the West if possible. Curious anyone's thoughts on the highest climate zone / lowest cost you're going to find out here? IMO it seems like Yuma, AZ - Zone 10A with reasonably affordable homes. Anybody else have any thoughts? Adam

Bright lights in the Sky
by Silas_Sancona- 0 replies

As someone who has studied weather about as long as i have all things green and leafy, i have always been fascinated by the countless ways the sky can offer up something interesting at any moment. From the look of frost on the ground at sunrise on a cold winter morning, to how menacing the sky can become while storm casing, and avoiding an approaching tornado and softball- sized Hail, there is always something worth looking up for. When it comes to some of the more"optical" things that appear above our heads, some, like Haloes and Rainbows are pretty common, others are rare enough that you'd have to be in the right place at the right time to observe. Some are so uncom…

Brookings Oregon is a southern coast town. Sunset 17, zone 9b they hit 99F/37.2C today 9/25/2016. The old record was 93 back in 1937. I am attempting to understand an anomaly that I have observed in temperature recording stations near Lake Havasu, Arizona (Bullhead City Airport)and Yuma, Arizona. Bullhead City, Arizona is located at latitude 35.15° north and is 547 feet in altitude. The location at Yuma, Arizona is located at latitude 32.97° north with an elevation of 200 feet. Notwithstanding this rather substantial difference in latitude, Bullhead City, Arizona is consistently warmer in the winter months compared to areas surrounding Yuma, Arizona. One prime example is during the 2007 January freeze experienced throughout the western United States. Bullhead City, Arizona (Airport) recorded a low …

New toy + weather data project
by ColdBonsai- 3 replies

Howdy all. Just thought I'd show something I started working on. I recently added an Ambient Weather station to the yard and have done a little Python programming for the data it provides. I'm sure I could have used another app to get the same information or even just made macros in excel, but where's the fun in that? The goal is to have my own master data file that I can add to and reference for years to come. To make using it easier I wanted a script that formats and pulls out all the data nuggets for me, so I really just have to download a cvs file and let the computer magic do its thing. So here's what I got so far: - One master data file th…

The 1st of October is the official start of the Wet Season in the Top End of the Northern Territory. And as if it was scripted, we had a beautiful little downpour about 9.00am this morning. This was the first rain in the Leanyer ( my suburb ) gauge since 28th April, ie; 5 full calendar months without rain. Without checking official records it would be right up there with the longest droughts recorded. We have an extreme Wet/Dry monsoonal climate that is hard on man, beast and palms. Last 'wet' I recorded 100" until the end of April and not a drop since until this mornings welcome rain. I shudder to think what my next water bill is gunna read.....I have been pouring it on t…
