What do you think of this zone map?

I think it might be a bit generous, but the colors at least make it very easy to differentiate zones. http://www.plantmaps.com/interactive-california-usda-plant-zone-hardiness-map.php

Jan 2 Cold Snap 1 2 3 4

Gonna get chilly down here, lows of 31, 27, 33 respectively. At least this is a holiday weekend, so I have plenty of time to prepare. I am bringing quite a few plants in that I would normally leave out. I will hit a few with a good burst of liquid fertilizer which might boost the salts in the leaves just a bit and yes, I know I should have done this at least a couple of days ago. I may throw an old sheet over a couple of things, but probably not bother with a light. So, what are you doing to prepare your plants for a brush with death?

There is good likelihood that the rainy season will kick in next week. Models show good moisture and seabreeze collisions with the S and E flow over Florida. This is great news for rain. While the potential for hail exists in early season storms, it appears that everything will moisten up for those wonderful afternoon and evenings showers and storms. It has been very dry for 2 weeks. Comfortable, but dry. Let us hope for some good palm growing weather!....Papa needs to fertilize!

I didnt quite realize how popular these threads were until this year, so here we are! "Happy" Hurricane Season. We will start off with the forecast for the season, and what we currently have going on out there right now. The forecast from just about every agency or group that puts out a seasonal forecast is calling for an ABOVE AVERAGE season this year. Colorado State University put out their forecast calling for 19 named storms, 9 of those being hurricanes, and 4 being major hurricanes. NOAA has also put out their forecast, and they are calling for 14-21 named storms, 6-10 of those being hurricanes, and 3-6 of those hurricanes being major hurricanes. The a…

Well someone had to do it. Meteorologically it starts tomorrow. So far here is averaging around 9.4C min and 18.3C max and we did have one morning of 2.5C with a bit of crispiness on the exposed lawns in the morning. But we're way behind on rainfall.

The news is grim, but preparation is key. Tomorrow night from about 9PM to 9am, 28d F and possibly lower in our colder valley locations(like mine). Then down to 30d F the next day, and 31d F after that. My afternoons the next three says will be protecting the palms, plumeria, and hibiscus all over my yard! And the banana and pineapple. The last prolonged below freezing temps here wiped out a ton of ficus trees and burnt a lot of green vegetation into the ground. More to come...

Where is Central Florida ?
by Bill H2DB- 32 replies

While it is a indefinite area , I wonder where it perceived to be by those not living in the general area . Economic ties are one thing , but climate-wise etc are another . When I was young , the Daytona area was much more tied to Jacksonvile in many ways economically than now , as the growth of the I-4 corridor has changed everything . I prefer to refer to sub-divisions such as N. Central , S. Central , and even W. Central etc . It does seem that from afar , Florida ( as are many other places ), is seen as one amorphous place . Here is the Wikipedia article . Needs some input . Conspicuously absent is Highlands County , for e…

Tropics at Elevation
by Jerry@TreeZoo- 27 replies

We have discussed where the demarcation line is between the tropics and subtropics often. There are still disagreements but what the heck. What I have not seen much of is discussion of the tropics at elevation. Where does it stop being tropical? At 2000 feet? 3000 feet? 5000 feet? Just to make it clear, what I am talking about is the ability to grow coconuts, Cyrtostachys and Bread Fruit without a problem. We have many tropical areas represented such as Hawaii, Costa Rica, Australia etc that are tropical but also have highlands or mountains. What do you guys think?

Summer down under 1 2 3 4

Some photos of the garden on what's been a near perfect early Summer's day. High of around 24C (75F), and not too humid. Been quite a bit of rain in the past two weeks so everything is growing like mad. Wintered over the banana trunk and one leaf with some polyester frostcloth, which allowed it to take off again since September. This trunk has been going since November 2016 so must flower soon. R. Sapida Oceana small grade only been in ground since September 30th currently pushing out its second new frond. https://youtu.be/_i4WfjVqPDA

Miami Beach Microclimate 1 2
by cocopalm90- 1 follower

Hello everyone! I'm brand new here and new to plants. I have a question for you weather/climate experts. I know about large bodies of water (oceans especially) helping to moderate temperatures. I also am familiar with urban heat islands. With all of this in mind, where in Miami Beach would theoretically have the warmest/most moderated microclimate? On the map below, I would guess that the very slightly north of the dot labeled "Miami Beach - North" would be the most moderated because of the land being so thin. What would you all say? Is there even a difference? Thanks everyone! Glad to be here and hoping to learn a lot and contribute when I can.

Well, as noone has done it yet, I thought I'd start another current weather thread. For me today is going to be 24C, and blue skies. In the next couple of days there is a chance of showers, but maybe the cloud cover will up the night temps. The nights are taking a while to come back. 8.1C last night. regards Tyrone

Where does it start looking tropical for you? 1 2
by philinsydney- 56 replies

We are lucky on the east coast because we have tropical-looking vegetation at least as far as 35S. the Illawarra district south of Sydney has fertile soils and a high rainfall, meaning there are large figs, bangalow palms and fan palms, flame trees and stinging trees growing wild. But when I am travelling north the landscape doesn't really resemble the tropics until I reach Grafton and the Clarence valley. Here all of a sudden there are sugarcane plantations on the river flats overlooked by timber houses on stilts, and some enormous Moreton Bay figs in the paddocks. There is nothing quite like this south of Coffs Harbour. Where do the pseudo-tropics start for you?

Polar Vortex on the Way? 1 2 3

Saw this article in the news this morning. Haven't read it yet but am already shivering. If there is any good in this news, it's that the vortex won't arrive until mid-February. Maybe the effects won't be as severe by then. polar-vortex-may-be-on-the-horizon-scientists-warn Note: I'm reading article now. Polar vortex to start end of Dec. and inflict "one of the harshest winters in years." Yikes! I remember the last one not too many years back.

Rain Machine 1 2 3

The rain machie shut off. Two weeks now without any rain, and almost no clouds to speak of. After an unusually cool 66F MOnday morning, it is hot and humid once again but still, no noise or storms. The lack of even hearing thunder is odd. Even when we miss it, it usually gets loud daily here. My hope is some good moisture returns soon. We need it as May and April were also dry and sunny. What wacko summers we have had lately....

NM Climate and Palms 1 2
by SailorBold- 42 replies

I live in central New Mexico on the northern edge of the Chihuahuan Desert. It is quite a challenge to grow palms in this area due to low rainfall, high elevations, and cold winters. Most if not all palm trees planted in NM are located within this region. The USDA hardiness zones within NM range from 7a to 9a, and mostly within the Chihuahuan desert borders. It is classified as a high desert which differs in comparison to the low-subtropical Sonoran desert found in Arizona and California.
