Every Palm Person In the World

As a young Golf Rat,my mother would drop me off at the Course early every summer morning weather notwithstanding. As a father of two boy's(now moving towards young men)I now have a better understanding.I guess sometimes we can all be 500lbs Gorilla's but particularly when those hormones start popping as teenager's. That day I think I was on my third 18 when the sky became darkly ominous.Lightning bolts were hitting everywhere and the Storm was coming our way.All golfers made rapid movement towards the closest structure as the rain and following lightning were closing in.About 10 of us made it to one structure and we all felt happy to be somewhat protected. This one was n…

Orlando Area Winters- Recent Trends and History
by Matthew92- 1 follower

This thread will be to discuss Orlando, FL's winter climate. Winters have definitely been trending warmer in recent years in Orlando. Vacationing in the area over the last 20 years I've watched the Araucaria get to South FL height and things like bottle palms, rubber plants, and foxtails appear all over the place. Here's an interesting web page that shows the annual low for each year in Orlando back to 1894. The recent warm trend seems to start around 2004, after which getting to the upper 20's or even below freezing (the last 10 years) has become rare (sans a couple notable outliers). Before this period, it appears that one could generally count on getting to at lea…

Florida SE Rainy Season 2018
by Matthew92- 24 replies
- 2.1k views
Just thought I'd create a thread for anyone who wants to share their rainfall situation this season. I had FL mainly in mind, but if anyone from the Southeast or even somewhere else wants to share that's fine too. I just got a strong pop up storm that wasn't weakening or only sideswiping my location (which most of them have been so far). I love it. Classic summer storm: got a little of everything: wind, lightning, about 1.3 inches of rain. I wouldn't want to live somewhere that doesn't get storms like this.

Chris is Coming
by DoomsDave- 10 replies

Howdyall: Tropical Storm Chris is going to whack the Bahamas, which, if my memory serves, puts it at least a bit in line to hit our cherished colleagues in South Florida, as things stand now. It could strengthen into a 'Cane fast, and not sugar. Hmm. Maybe Dr. Robert can pin a sign-off place, for those of you who must? Just a thought. Let the games begin . . . . . dave

Indialantic, FL climate question
by Yunder Wækraus- 1 follower

Greetings, Y'all :-) This is my first-ever post, so please forgive me if I've placed the question in the wrong location. I was born in Florida (4th generation to live there), but I've been living in CA for most of my life. My wife and I just sold our Fairfield, CA house (USDA 9b, Sunset 14), and we're trying to purchase a home in Indialantic near some of my first cousins. Our little garden in Fairfield included a nice selection of unusual (for Solano County) tropical and subtropical plants, including king palms, which had survived the freeze of 2013 without protection, young dragon trees, and a floss silk tree. I really want to turn the house we're trying to purchas…

Heavy rains again for Texas
by Ed in Houston- 9 replies
- 2.1k views
After a relative dry winter it looks like the heavy rains are about to move in again. Deep tropical moister is set to move into Texas. The forecast shows over the next few days 10 inches will fall over parts of Texas. A ten inches rain over a few days will probably not cause much flooding but if the most rain that falls moves a little farther east to Houston and falls over a shorter period there could be some flooding. After 84 inches fell in 2015 at my place, this does not deem so extreme anymore. Ed in Houston

Siberian snow pack and extra cold winters
by PalmatierMeg- 8 replies

The Washington Post has a group of weather gurus called the Capital Weather Gang. They are the go-to people on weather. This posting, which I've only skimmed, examines the connection between the size of the snow pack in Siberian and our spate of extra cold winters in the Northern Hemisphere. Interesting. http://voices.washingtonpost.com/capitalweathergang/2010/12/is_siberian_snow_eastern_us_co.html?hpid=newswell

Good news for east coast winter (or lack thereof)
by SubTropicRay- 17 replies
- 2.1k views
From Accuweather's Henry Margusity NAO, PNA and La Nina Are Just Ruining Our WinterDec 12, 2011; 9:36 AM ET Discussion Videos will resume on Wednesday when I am back in the office. In the meantime, the weather pattern, while stormy, is not the one snow lovers in the eastern part of the country want to see prior to Christmas. Here is why.... La Nina - Remains weak, so pattern remains typical of a La Nina with the cold weather in the West and northern Plains and the warmth across the East. The storm track has been from the southwest to the western Great Lakes. NAO - North Atlantic Oscillation remains positive, so no blocking and therefore no East Coast storm…

Min/Max Thermometer

There was a great thread in the old forum about min/max thermometers, but I don’t recall which ones were recommended or which features people liked best. I would like to purchase about 30 thermometers for our society members to determine minimum temperatures around the New Orleans area this winter. I don't want to spend too much money, but I don't want to buy crap either. Any recommendations? Kate

Palms etc. on my route to work
by PalmatierMeg- 27 replies

Hello fellow palm lovers, I work on Little Pine Island, a Florida wildlife preserve my company is restoring to its native state. After 11 years of driving, I'd stopped thinking about my drive, which is not ordinary commute. On my way, I pass through the village of Matlacha (MAT-la-shay), population ~750 out of season. Matlacha is located mostly on its own island, connected to the mainland by a drawbridge across Matlacha Pass. It is a quirky, funky fishing village trying to remake itself as the art mecca of SW FL (what palm lover wouldn't covet a coconut postcard?). It is also loaded with palms and has more Jamaican tall coconuts in one place than I've seen (maybe LY do…

Do you believe in climate change?

Taking into account your observations when gardening, and specifically growing palms, have you noticed any genuine change in your climate, or evidence of global warming? Or have you become aware through education and through the media? I'm just wondering what people's thoughts are on here...?

Fall in Florida 1 2

What a beautiful day in SW Florida! Temp near 80, dew points in the upper 40's, what more can you ask for. I was actually able to work all day in the garden without having to come in every 30 minutes to rest and cool off. Too bad it was not like this all year round! Was able to finally turn off the air and open the windows, first time since early spring.

Weather Stations For The Home
by Cristóbal- 18 replies

What weather stations you have for your palms and house and how you think is the quality ? I have much curiositey on this theme. Many persons post temperatures they register by their homes. But what brands models of the home weather stations you use ? In the last 2 months I look for a better home weather station. In the last week I order Oregon Scientific WMR200 with UV. Anybody use this ? I find very good reviews for this system.

Zone Changes
by BobbyinNY- 11 replies
I usually like to see a pattern before I say that I really think zones are changing, but for the past 3 years in a row, we've had some of the warmest winters on record.. Last year the temps didn't get below 8f (and only 2x) and this year so far they haven't gotten below 11f - and most of the nighttime lows have been in the high 20's - low 30's - which would technically put us in a zone 8. Today it's a balmy 59f, and all the flowers are poking out of the ground. I'm just wondering if other people across the country are noticing the same thing.

Climate Change
by amazondk- 28 replies

I was searching around for more information on the last ice age and it's impacts on climate and came up with this article, The last ice age to present. There are some intersting points raised here. One is that there have been abrupt changes in world temperatures many times over the last 150,000 years. There have been warm times simlar to today and much colder drier times. I have always been fascinated by the ice ages as I was raised in an area that was glaciated in recent history, northern Montana. Here in Amazonia little concrete is really known about the exact conditions during the colder times, but the forest apparently was much smaller. With the sea level as mu…
