So how cold did I really get?
by iwan- 16 replies
- 2.2k views
I am having a hard time trusting the readings from my thermometer this last freeze. My low today was 21.9F and yesterday was 23.1 with 12+ hours below freezing both days, but the plant damage doesn't seem to correspond. The remote sensor is at 5' under a small tree and above lawn. My rural temps average 3-5 degrees below official airport readings (also fairly rural, but probably some heat island effect there). During the big freeze of 2007 I referenced this digital thermometer with a traceable thermometer in our cold room at work in the range of 36-39F. The sensor was actually reading .8 degrees higher than the traceable thermometer, which actually makes my measured …

Cold Weather Neurosis
by PalmGuyWC- 25 replies
- 2.2k views
I'm starting this as a new thread because what I see most in the weather threads is angst. We all complain about the weather, but there is not a damn thing we can do to change the weather. We could change our behavior by not growing tropical plants that we know, deep down, don't have much of a chance growing in our climate. We all grow marginal stuff which we go to great lengths to protect from the cold. If in containers, they can be brought inside, or if outside covered, or heated......at great expense. If we were all a little more practicle, we wouldn't suffer winter neurosis. We bring it on ourselves. Dick

Summer started already

As usual, we skip right past spring and go straight to summer in South Texas in Mar/Apr. It was 105F (40C) in Laredo yesterday, 104 in McAllen, 101 in Kingsville and Alice, 96 in San Antonio and so on. The 90 degree heat surged all the way north to North TX, was 88F in Wichita Falls along the Oklahoma border. Another hot day today (90-100) throughout most of South TX from San Antonio to the Mexico border.

Expanding tropics?

Hurricanes and typhoons at their peak intensities are shifting away from the equator and towards the poles, scientists reported Wednesday, potentially placing coastal areas that are unaccustomed to deadly storms in their path if the trend continues. Satellite data going back to 1980 show a global average shift of about 35 miles each decade on both sides of the equator, the experts announced in the peer-reviewed journal Nature. This “pronounced poleward migration” means “potentially profound consequences for life and property” if the trend continues, according to the scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Massachusetts Institute of …

Awoke this morning to the kitty cat burrowed under the covers, snug and comfy in a cold house. Outside, it got down to 32 F in the upper part of my yard, and 28.6 in the lower part. Cold, but no damage. The tender stuff had been covered up. How about the rest of you?

Thermal effect of water
by Walt- 1 follower

December of 2010 was the worst month of cold I've ever experienced in my 13 winters living in Highlands County, Florida. You can't get any farther inland between the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. As such, there is no thermal influence from both bodies of water. However, there is a thermal lake effect influence, but it doesn't carry far. I have three friends who live in a lake front community. All are master gardeners (as myself), hence they are concerned about and record low temperatures. Two of my friends live right on the lake (3,504 acres in area) and one friend lives about 500 feet of the east shore of the lake. On my coldest night last December I recorded a low …

What Is Up With Hawaii?
by PalmTreeDude- 4 replies

When you look at Hawaii on the USDA Zone interactive map, it is all crazy. It goes from 9a all the way to 13a. Are the 9a - 10a parts mountains (volcanoes)? I know that on the very tops of the mountains it can snow simply from high elevations, but wouldn't right below them be warmer?

'Once-in-a-lifetime' La Niña draws to a close Press Release, Monday May 16, 2011 - 13:14 ESTOne of the strongest La Niña events on record has finally concluded, after playing a major role in the record breaking rainfall and flooding seen through eastern and northern Australia over the last 10 months, according to weatherzone.com.au. By many measures this was one of the strongest La Niña events on record, surpassing those seen in the 1970’s and rivalling the 1917 event. La Niña events are characterised by colder than usual sea surface temperatures through the central and eastern Pacific Ocean (near South America), along with warmer than usual waters near the Austr…

Im just curious at what temp does frost start to occur on the grass? What about trees? If its on the grass is it on the trees? I would think not because the cold air sinks. Why is it I see no frost on trees and palms yet on the grass. Im full of questions, also when you see frost on the ground, like a hard frost, what temp does that occur? I have never seen frost on the trees here. Yet I see it on the grass and sometimes everywhere on the ground. And why on the roof too? Lol, sorry bout all the questions. If you can answer them, I would be happy because on most clear nigths in the winter, there is usually frost on the grass and roof.

Warmest winter city/region in southern California
by Sandy Loam- 17 replies
- 2.2k views
Hello. I am not in California. I am located over here in Florida, but I am trying to figure out which parts of southern California stay the warmest in winter. I'm not talking about coastal areas that never get cold at night, where the daily high temperatures might be 65 F at best. I'm talking about places that might be much colder at night than the coast, but where the warm up is so dramatic by day that by 10:00 or 10:30 am, it's already semi-warm outside. When I look at weather patterns, the only place which really fits this bill in southern California is the strip of warm air that runs from the Mexico border diagonally up the valley surrounding the Salton Sea, per…

COLD MORNINGS!

BS in another thread made me think of this phenomenon! It seems just before sunrise is the coldest part of the night most times. I was wondering if anyone knew why the coldest part of the night was about an hour to an hour and half just before sunrise. It seems the temp can drop a few more degrees in that time frame. On the surface one would think it would get warmer as the sun begins it morning ritual of rising. What is the mechanism behind this drop in temp just before sunrise? I realize other factors might come into play ,but in general this what I have noticed since I started watching, recording temps!

United States Severe Weather 1 2

I got bored and started thinking, what if i create a thread specific to severe weather events? I thought about this partly because of the event that has occurred across portions of Texas and Oklahoma today, this activity is spreading over Arkansas as i type this. If you do not know, the Storm Prediction Center has 5 severe weather risk categories. Marginal (1/5) - 5% severe threat Slight (2/5) - 15% severe threat Enhanced (3/5) - 30% severe threat Moderate (4/5) - 45% severe threat High (5/5) - 60% severe threat So what do the percentages mean? Well, say you are under a Slight Risk, this means there is a 15% chance of seeing severe weather within a 25 …

All those in CA understand what I'm going through... This week 112, 113, 114, over night lows upper 80s, recorded the highest overnight low in history @ 90 on Monday night and matched it on Tuesday. My plants are dying, even with daily drenchings... Tree ferns, in the shade fried, I mean brown-Fried, dried up and dead. The grass is loving it. Tropicals, hating it... Anyone else in weather trouble??? Can someone post a picture of snow, just to make me feel cooler?

As a young Golf Rat,my mother would drop me off at the Course early every summer morning weather notwithstanding. As a father of two boy's(now moving towards young men)I now have a better understanding.I guess sometimes we can all be 500lbs Gorilla's but particularly when those hormones start popping as teenager's.
