COLD COMING TO CALIFORNIA
by happ- 33 replies
- 3.1k views
NWS-LOS ANGELES 01-18-08 1500 . . .ALL EYES TURN TO THE NORTH AS A REMARKABLY LARGE AND COLD TROUGH DROPS STRAIGHT SOUTH OUT OF WESTERN CANADA AND TAKES AIM ON CENTRAL CALIFORNIA. THE COOLING TREND BEGINS SUNDAY AS THE TROUGH BECOMES ENTRENCHED OVER THE CENTRAL PART OF THE STATE. ALTHOUGH THE MODELS SHOW SOME DIFFERENCES IN THE EXACT TRACK AND DEPTH OF THE TROUGH...THE OVERALL MESSAGE REMAINS THE SAME. NORTHERN AND CENTRAL CALIFORNIA...AND EVENTUALLY SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ARE IN FOR A MAJOR PATTERN CHANGE WITH MUCH COLDER TEMPERATURES AND PERHAPS A LITTLE PRECIPITATION ON THE WAY EARLY NEXT WEEK.

As soon as those ancient Romans started running their plantations, they knew they had it made when it concerning the climate. That's because the Italian South is a subtropical paradise, and the ancient Romans knew it, using the warm, dry, tranquil, subtropical climate to grow all sorts of cash crops like oranges, tomatoes, almonds, peaches, sugarcane, etc. The Italian South rarely suffers from severe weather; all the thunderstorms that occur in the region are non-severe, and at the same time, put on spectacular lightning shows to wow the viewers. Lots of rain comes from these storms, but the rain is delivered in quick bursts, meaning that the sun has lots of room to …

Snow in all 48 Contiguous US States today?
by Keith N Tampa (ex SoJax)- 12 replies

Today (Feb 12, 2010) there are winter storm warnings for parts of Northwest Florida. If it snows here today, there will be snow on the ground at least somewhere in all 48 contiguous states. Obviously Alaska has snow. No word on the mountains of Hawaii, but if there is snow accumulation in Florida today, this will be the first time in recorded history that all US States (excluding Hawaii) have at least some snowcover. I'm pulling for some Snow in FL just so this absurd winter makes it into the record books in as many catagories as possible. That probably sounds weired, but if we've had to endure it, we ought to earn some kind of award! I'm reasonably satisfied how t…

December 2010 Summary
by spockvr6- 30 replies
Today was far and away the warmest day of the month for my station, wih a logged high of 79F. The values for the rest of the month are a bit chillier! The month has ended with an average temperature of 51.2F, which is 2.1F lower than the alltime record for Tarpon Springs of 53.3F (1903). The average high of 61.2F is actually lower than the normal average temperature for the month. Heres hoping for a better January! This could get worse than expected...it's 8 PM Tue night, and already 31f in my lower field. If this holds up, I'll be below freezing for 11-12 hours...It looks like I'm gonna be the CRDB poster child this year. In this field I have, in ascending order(lowest/coldest first) Yucca Rostrata(they should be ok) Cham Hum Cerifera, Jubaea, Butia x Jubaea, Sabal Uresana, Dyp Decipiens, Parajubaea Torallyi Torallyi, Ravanea Xerophila, and at the top, Rav Glauca and Sabal Mauritiaformis. Over 2,000 plants at risk...yikes...help me Mr. Wizard !!!!

Please, no comments on the topic of Global Warming! I do not want this to be debated here and is simply a poll. There are a lot of debate for global warming in the forum, so I thought it would be fun to see an unscientific survey.

We have had a horrible winter, and from the looks of things, it is nowhere near being over. another 4-6 inches of snow expected? Come on! My tulips haven't even bloomed yet. There are barely any trees that are even beginning to show signs of life in them. What a depressing spring!

Let's Talk Sunspots Again
by _Keith- 21 replies

As opposed to last years sleeping sun, and a winter with some 15 year record lows to go with it. So, we now find ourselves in precisely the opposite situation as last year. And this is a great time to start the conversation, too, because the sun has not only awakened, but it is about to throw a screaming hissy fit, a spit Plasma all over us. Will this impact the weather? Let's keep an eye on it and talk about it. BUT NO GLOBAL WARMING or POLITICS. Let's keep it about the sun, please. http://i.engadget.co...-hit-earth-tom/

I was curious what everyone was covering this fine week of lovely temperatures in Florida and the East Coast. Last year I spent a lot of time doing this, this year, not so much. Here is what I have covered: Borassus - because it is low to the ground, frost gets it and it never gets to grow in my coldest area. Gaussia gomez-pompae Tahinas - again, hardy but low to the ground tropical Encephalartos Orania palindan and ravaka Things I am not covering: P. pacifica and woodfordii - if they die, so be it. Tired of being burnt back Raphia farinifera C. fallaensis Bottle/Spindles Veitchias

Hello everyone, I'm sure that most of you are aware of the now happening heat dome. It's been going on for just over a week now, pushing indexes of over 100F to the midwest. It's now moving east, and I hope all of you are ready because it's not nice at all. No matter how good you think it'll be for the palms, it will NOT be good for you. Drink lots of water and stay inside when you can. 22 people have died, lets keep it like that. Jason

Spring weather PNW 1 2 3
by Chester B- 81 replies

Spring? What spring? We've been about 10-15 degrees below normal and today hit with the latest snow in Portland's history. On top of that it's also the most snow we've had all winter. Schools closed, Highways closed, trees down everywhere and at least 50,000 without power. Depending on location some areas have 8", I have about probably about 3". It's the real wet heavy stuff. I'm glad I didn't buy an annuals yet, and left my Ensete in the garage.

Hottest July Ever

Interested in how hot July was nationwide and if any records were broken. July 2006 was the hottest July ever in Los Angeles. Suburban San Fernando valley recorded an all-time maximum of 119F/48.3C. I've been a "weather watcher" for National Weather Service for 26 years. JULY 2006 [elevation 910F/227M AveMax: 94.7 NormMax: 88/31C AveMin: 71.4 NormMin: 66/19C Hot and quite humid with isolated thunderstorms much of the month but nothing more than a trace on several days at my station. Ocean temps have been warmer than normal nearly all summer but periodically spike into "El Nino"-like readings of 80F+ increasing mugginess at night. Haven't noticed …

The upcoming "modern solar minimum"
by Turtlesteve- 6 replies
- 2.9k views
I watched a presentation on climate and the upcoming solar minimum. The short summary is that we're headed for a ~30+ year period of reduced solar activity starting in 2020. The IPCC / global warming consensus tends to discount the impact, but the presenter believes that solar forcing has been underestimated, and we'll see severely colder temperatures in the next couple decades, potentially leading to crop failures and famine. (2nd link is the presentation which is quite long but interesting) https://www.livescience.com/61716-sun-cooling-global-warming.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_yqIj38UmY This certainly wouldn't fit with my long term gard…
