The long range forecast for winter in the Great Southern Land. It looks like my coconut is safe this winter, which is good as I can't protect it much any more as it's too big. http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/ahead/rain_ahead.shtml http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/ahead/temps_ahead.shtml

Winter Slam

Well ... Old Man Winter has delivered a punch to my area. It's rare to see such an occurrence, but when it does happen you never quite know what the end result will be. I heard a cracking sound after mid-nite and thought a tree limb broke under the weight of heavy wet snow. Stepped on out and found a 60' Eucalyptus urnigera down. Lucky it landed right where I wanted it to. (3' concrete retaining wall for reference) The thaw is on and looks like my chainsaw is in for a workout when the weather picks up. How did others fair in the latest PNW blast?. Cheers, Barrie.

Winter solstice 2017
by Tracy- 5 replies

I thought it worth noting that it's the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere today. I like to celebrate the fact that after this, the days get longer even though autumn has come to a close and cold winter has arrived. I'm sure my friends in the southern hemisphere are excited at the arrival of their summer today as well! The good news locally was that we actually got rain in my part of Southern California which was a welcome break after a very dry late autumn which correlated to all the fires. I haven't looked at weather maps to see if Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties were so lucky as to receive some rainfall, but I know it would be a helpful respite in fighti…

Winter Storm Diego

Looks like my predictions for this winter were correct. Greenville is projected to get 1” to 3” inches, which is about our yearly snowfall averages in a just a few hours. At least the air temperature will be above freezing so I doubt anything will accumulate.

Winter Storm for California
by happ- 33 replies
- 2.5k views
A deep trough of Arctic air is pushing southward down the West Coast this weekend. Showers & mountain snowfall is forecast. The air mass is quite cold and would be considered chilly even for January with snow levels dropping to 5000 ft or lower in southern California and down to 2500' in northern California. In-fact snowfall could be observed near sea level in the Pacific Northwest. With such a cold system moving into California there must be concern about minimum temperatures once the storm shifts east early next week and nights clear. Frost has to be a real possibility in the usual calm low-lying regions of the interior valleys, desert and coastal areas of north…

Winter Storms Kai and Lucius

Man oh man! Did we have some heavy rain here in the last couple of days. I don't remember the last time we had strong storms like these - it must be several years since a similar storm hit us. Usually after a big storm, I wake up to see snow covering the Sierra Nevada Mountains. This morning, both the coastal range and the Sierra were coated in white! What a sight! Snow to the east and snow to the west. Rarely is a storm cold enough to bring snow to lower elevation ranges like the coastal range in central CA. How did youguys in the coastal ranges fare? Reports say CA-17 was closed in the Santa Cruz Mountains waiting for snow clearing equipment! https://www.wa…

Winter Weather for Socal this week!

I'm sitting here trying to make my stiff fingers work the keyboard wondering how cold it is today. 48F for the high today!!!!! I've never seen it this cold for the high!!!! Wind advisory in effect which means at least 35 MPH winds expected with gusts near 45 MPH; once we start to get above 40 MPH it gets real nasty blowing up through our canyon. Snow levels are predicted to drop down to about 2000 feet by tomorrow morning and low temps will be in the 30's for at least the remainder of the week. So we can count on at least a week of no warmth at all, just cold cold cold. Post some links people! Let's talk this thing out! frackle jack it's cold like an eskimo's pie!

Winter Weather Threat - February 2011 1 2 3 4

Hi all: I wanted to create this thread, with the correct year, as a continuation to the January thread. A few weeks ago, I had posted about the models latching-on to a possible outbreak of very cold arctic air spilling down the plains. Although the models were consistent, they were questionable as the cold air that was needed never really built-up in Canada as depicted. It's very common for the GFS to show some scary scenario 10-14 days away but the cold air needed to make it all happen is lacking. We have had the two fronts come down, and while very chilly, it's nothing record-breaking. Still - it's been below freezing at my house now for about 12 hours so this …

Winter’s Numbers/Where are you?

In South Florida, we are enjoying what is likely our last cool breeze. That stated, it is possible to now look back on the Winter of 2019/2020. In this area, it has been exceedingly warm. Using the Trewartha climate classification system, the designation Tropical (A) applies to climates in which all 12 months average 18 degrees C. or 64.4 F. This is the norm here but this year has exceedingly warm. Specifically, the following constitute the average temperatures for what constitutes our Winter. December/2019-72.41 F.; January/2020-70.56 F; February/2020-72.41 F. These temperatures were compiled at PBIA. The low temperature took place on January 22, 2020, when we had …

Winterizing contradictions
by Than- 16 replies
I am considering winterizing methods and I read lots of advice online. However, some of them seem to contradict each other. Can anyone help me clear the mental fog? 1. Cover plants under tall evergreen trees to stop frost from falling on plants and also to trap heat VS use deciduous trees so that sun rays can pass through in the winter and warm plants up. 2. Mulch the soil around the soil to insulate it VS keep soil clear because it absorbs heat during the day and releases it during the night. 3. Keep the soil dry during cold spells to avoid freezing the roots VS water the plants because wet soil absorbs much more heat (again, if there is mulch on it, how c…

Current forecast has the eye coming about 40 miles or so from my house. I am boarding up windows all day. All potted plants are in the house. Boat out of the water. I have a generator and lots and lots of gas and water and food. I plan on riding this out unless the eye wall is going to give us a direct hit. Anything under 120 mph winds I'm staying. My home is block with hurricane straps. I hope my palms can handle the winds. I'm not looking forward to inevitably losing some trees.

World Weather in May 1 2

It seems there is not much interest in the weather in May around the globe. At least not being expressed in a monthly weather thread. Here in Northern Brazil the rains continue, the rivers are at record level. And, the damage is increasing as houses and cropland go under water. dk

Hello, I am curious about the big freezes that have hit traditionally subtropical areas like central and south Florida, south Texas and southern and coastal California. For example, how bad was the freeze in '89 here in Florida? Did the native Royals see damage in thier habitat in south Florida? Thanks, Bill

Worst weather ever recorded
by Nigel- 33 replies

The metoffice today confirmed what a lot of us in the UK already knew. 2007 is the worst summer ( 2/3rds in) ever recorded in 250 years. Much of the country under floods. Zero heat, in Bristol not one day has reached 25C. Almost no sunshine. Apparently people are falling ill to a new illness related to SAD. They are calling it SWISS, summertime winter induced symptoms syndrome . Theres a lot of it about ! Global warming is not what we thought it would be here ! 18 months without a summer is a long long time.
