So tired of this !@#$%^&*! wind! Experiencing some of the strongest winds EVER here. Looks like there will be a lot of damage to the yard...Pool and grass are filled with pine needles. Tender fronds are getting bent backwards and small tree canopy completely blown out. How's everyone else's yard in Southern California faring?

WINDY WEATHER
by www.dadluvsu.com- 3 replies

Lots of wind today, my shadehouse has been blown around in its first mild bit of wind... The wood structure ripped a couple small tears in my shadecloth. Some pots that were stacked in a corner fell over and my groundcover has been blown all over the place... This is the first time I have encountered any kind of wind since I built the second shadehouse. I can imagine now how catastrophic hurricane force winds will be if they ever come across my palm operation... It will be bad ... Did anyone else have any wind damage? Here's a couple photos around the shadehouse....

OK, it is officially winter here, and it will be a northern summer in a couple of weeks I guess? The weather has been nice here, with some rainy days, some sunny, and warmish nights and warm days...I certainly can't complain. I hope this continues for another 8-10 weeks... How is everyone's season shaping up? Daryl

After a very warm December 2013 in Florida but a cooler than normal California, the roles flip/flopped this January. Air temperatures are one aspect. Ocean/Water temperatures are another issue. Here are some examples for Jan. 26, 2014: 1 Cape Canaveral, Fl.-65F. 2 Ft. Myers, Fl.-62F. 3 Pensacola, Fl.-52F. 4 Mobile, Ala.- 48F. 5 Grand Island, La.-52F. 6 Galveston, Tx.-50F. 7 Port Aransas, Tx.-53F. 8 Camp Pendleton, Ca.-60F. 9 Santa Monica, Ca.-60F. 10 Fernandina Beach, Fl,-50F. 11 Palm Beach Inlet, Fl.-75F. 12 Key West, Fl.-68F. Interesting to note that the Ocean at the Palm Beach Inlet is a full seven degrees warmer than Key West, which is over one hundred and fifty miles…

Thread to talk about the Winter 2015/2016 in all Europe I will maintain updated this thread with temperatures and information about all Europe, via Wetterzentrale and weather.com , anyways, it's very grateful if any other European user enters to tell how it's the Winter in his zone/area/country , mostly because a lot of European users have their own weather stations, recordings, etc... We started the winter of 2016 like in Spring, in almost all south Europe. But, Winter officialy started in 21 December 2015, and the first week and a couple of days of the Winter it was hot in all Europe... In my zone for example we had most days with maximums above 20ºC and unl…

Winter 2020.. A glimpse ahead..

With October quickly moving along, thought it might be time to take a look at what may lie ahead for the up-coming winter here in the U.S. Climate Prediction Center released their latest update to the CFSv2's North American Model plots/ Ensemble thoughts on how the next 3-4 months could pan out. Take a look.. **As is the case with any forecast, nothing is set in stone and any pattern set ups not presently noted atm, that might occur later, can shift what is suggested presently. Keep in mind the CFS itself has it's hiccups and can lean either too warm or dry or vice versa from time to time** That said, the 8 or so models depicted here are all used when making l…

Winter 23/24 in UK & Europe with an early freeze! 1 2

After the crappy winter last year, it seems we are going to be starting this winter with below average temperatures as well. Far from ideal. Thankfully it won’t be too extreme as it is quite early on, limiting the extent of cold, but it is still quite a significant cold wave either way. And this appears to be effecting almost the entire continent too. This is coming down from Scandinavia and the Siberian arctic. Any cold will be heavily moderated / watered down by the seas around the British Isles, before it arrives on these shores. Here are the ECMWF and GFS runs. They are very similar looking now… both rather cold and wintry. I don’t …

A Weather Underground location on Kenlyn Rd. at the North-end of PB reveals the expected large micro-climate between PB near the super warm year round Gulfstream and the reported temperatures at the West Palm Beach airport (PBIA). There is no question that this was a ridiculously warm winter in South Florida but this micro-climate cuts both ways. Between Dec.1-31 2016, the high temperature at PBIA was 87F on Dec.6, 2016. The high on the same day on the site in PB was 82.4F. The low at PBIA for the month was 49F on Dec. 31,2016 while PB recorded 59F on the same date. Between Jan.1-31 2017, the high at PBIA was 86F on Jan.3, 2017 and the high the same day was only…

Time for a new thread now Summer is well and truly over. The next three months I have to be careful don't get caught out by a surprise frost, sometimes amount of wind/cloud cover defies even the professionals best efforts to forecast it. From 1 September it gets much easier, to get a significant frost that late needs perfect conditions which are easy to see coming. Count yourself lucky if you never get frost where you garden.

WINTER HAS ARRIVED!

Bottomed out at 37.4F here in coastal Tampa Bay. The temps just kept dropping overnight as the wind died down. Crystal blue skies. Coldest Thanksgiving morning in my 26 years here. The quick warmup begins as 75F expected by Friday afternoon. Long range expects milder weather Dec-Jan BUT a quick shot of cold, like this one, can always sneak in. I saw 31F in Gainesville FL. Ouch.

Winter hit us hard (Western European)...

Hi, This winter is the baddest since i started with exotics since 2003, but also if i remeber me the last winters i can remember a winter like this. Since 22 november 2008 untill now i got only 3 days that the tempetures was above 10C/50F. During december 2008 a cold period was developed on the cards, but this happend every winter but always the milder options won but this time not. The frost started on second christmas day and normally a period is a week or some days more but this time the milder air didn't come to us and it was getting only colder on the forecasts. In the southeast of The Netherlands has got snow and because of that tempetures from -20C/-4F recorded …

Well we all hate this season, but how is it going in your part of the world. We started with a 26C day, then the next we had thunderstorms and some heavy rain then it cleared by noon and got to 24C. This morning I woke to a cloud forest in my garden, with mist and thick fog in the canopy and water condensing and running off everything. The palms are springing open new leaves everywhere. Best regards Tyrone

Well, winter has been here for one week officially (In Oz we go by the calendar month, so winter is June-July-August). We got our first single digit night last night at home, down to 9C. That's about as cold as I'd like it to get! Unfortunately we still have a l o n g way to go. Days are picture perfect with cloudless skies and no breeze...millpond conditions, with temps in the low 20s C. No palm yellowing yet, but it always starts to show once minimums go below 10C (50F). Winter in the subtropics of South America

Of the the three major humid subtropical regions of the World: The southeastern United States East Asia (central and southern China, southern Japan, etc) The Pampas of South America (northern Argentina, far southern Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay) The last one listed is the least affected by severe cold waves and is also favored biologically since it is contiguous with the Neotropics. Even so, I am mildly surprised that the subtropical latitudes of South America are not immune to moderately low temperatures, even brief freezes. For instance, at the end of June 2021, a cold snap brought temperatures down to 0.8C at Asuncion and -1 at the airpor…

Winter in your neighborhood

An index devised for the estimation of energy demands for cooling and heating is referred to as Cooling and Heating degree days. The number of degrees that the mean temperature for the day falls below 65 degrees F.are heating degree days; the number of degrees that the mean temperature is above 65 degrees F. are cooling degree days. I selected some locations for the month of January (Winter) to compare neighborhoods. Those in the Southern Hemisphere can use July. Key West (h) 49 © 164 , Miami (h) 76 © 141, West Palm Beach(h) 92 © 99 ,Lakeland (h) 198 © 74. How do your neighborhoods compare to these numbers?

Any recommendations for thermostatically controlled 110v switches? Last year I left my heating lights on a day/night timer, but that wastes a lot of electricity. Looking for something preferably programmable, or that turns on at 38F or so. Should be outdoor rated.

Funny (not really) that just a couple weeks ago our highs and lows were 20°f warmer. Now our days are in the 60s and nights here down to the mid 40s. And rain. My palms don't know it is winter yet. I was out of town for a week. When I got back today I noticed growth on several of them. But I am sure that will change as soon as the cold rain accelerates the cooling of the soil. 2016 was fun while it lasted. As the garden gears down I will be working hard to prepare for next year along with Winter survival. All goes well over the winter I plan to... - Add SulPoMag to my palms in the next couple of weeks - Finish my irrigation system by moving h…

Winter of '80-'81 in Central Florida
by Bill H2DB- 9 replies

Being a weather nut of sorts , I have kept weather data/info for a long time in central Fla. Here is a scan of late December 1980 into January-early February 1981. I was basically tracking the difference between Daytona area weather ,and the area of Fla in the Heartland area. The data for Wauchula was taken from the local weekly paper the Herald Advocate . The station is a cold location overall for the area . It is the Ona Fla agricultural station . Quite a run of cold compared to recent times in the same areas . The intrusion into the Data around Jan 24 is from a graph that was on the next page , and the scale was insufficient , so .....
