So far it has been a very dry spring here. A little on the cool side today but it looks as a brief day in the 80s before we head back down to cooler temps next week. There is also a chance of rain this Sunday.

Where is the Rainy Season (Florida)? 1 2

I can't remember a dry and cool May...much less late May...in South Florid. Highs have been in the low 80s the past 10 days, with low humidy and of course, no rain other than a few random sprinkles just enough to get the car messy. Even the ocean temps are below average, with all this wind as of late. Does anyone look at the models and that can tell me if and when they are showing and increase in moisture for Florida? I don't see anything on the local 10 day forecast....it seems like we are stuck in a lovely, early Spring pattern which is great however, my tropicals want and need humidity and rain!!

Where were the weathermen?????

Hi all, Last night was an awakening to the power of mother nature. This is not hurricane season but the cold front that passed through last night was enough to damage my shadehouse throw leaves all over my yard, overturn 3 gallon pots filled with heavy soil and even pushed down some trees and electrical poles. Many homes of the island including my own was without power late last night. Some reports said that wind gusts were as strong as a Cat 2 Hurricane. Another report stated winds of only 70 mph , just under Cat 1 force. Either way...It was windy!!! Thank goodness my small palms pulled through. I was hoping they wouldn't snap and they didn't. Where the heck wa…

Where will climate be in another 10 years?
by ColumbusPalm- 15 replies

I am not all trying to be political about this, just wanted to open this if anyone has any predictions they wanted to share. When I was in high school over 10 years ago, I overwintered a Trachy in, at the time, a zone 5b. Now that same area in NW OH is a z6b. Crazy in my lifetime seeing the USDA zone map change like that. Even in Dave Francko’s book, the old USDA map is in there. Makes me think growing the truly hardy palms in this area may be a challenge now, but very rewarding in a decade. What do you all think?

Which Weather Phenomenon Do You Fear Most: Frosts/Freezes or Tropical Cyclones' Aftermath?

It looks as though nature (or Divine Providence) is sparing the Miami-Lauderdale, FL area "Is-Aye-Ee-Ahs" That is a nice way to begin August! I guess that this is a temporary "reprieve" though as the next 60-70 days are a virtual shooting gallery in the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico! I wish all our palm-loving, palm nurturing & growing members the very best of wishes (and freedom from bad storms) during this stressful season ahead. It kind of makes up a portion of my mind that asks itself: "what do I most fear as a threat to keeping my palmy landscape intact?" Is in tropical cyclone season, or is it winter with it's potentially fatal, or at least damagi…

Who ordered the cold?

We've been lucky so far this year with only a day touching down to ~32 when others closer to houston were getting 30 and snow. So today I heard the weatherman (on tv) say the coldest weather in 10 years is coming, I shuddered and immediately started making plans for the palms in my yard... Then I thought, Wait lets see what the weather sites have to say about this... Unfortunately they agreed, We havent been below 30 in my yard since 1996, I guess this is one of those zone jerking colds coming....I guess the cold that is currently hanging over FL is headed our way. Ill be lucky if I have 1/2 a yard left after this one, IKE took 1/2 the yard, looks like the sunsp…

Why am i considered 10a? 1 2

So I live in Golden Gate, which is basically a subsidiary of Naples and its a few miles east of downtown. On maps it is listed as a 10a hardiness zone, yet the coldest it gets here in winter is the lower 40s with a Cold Front. Winters here are windy however, which brings with it wind chill. Does this count towards the plant hardiness zone, or not? If not, I've NEVER seen it in the 30s here (besides like 2010) without factoring in wind chill.

Why Do Belem And Manaus Stay So Warm
by Rick Santos- 2 replies
- 1.3k views
What are the biggest reasons Manaus and Belem are always warm, compared to latitudes right at the Tropic of Cancer ? Is it the sun intensity? Or is it that they much too far away from the temperate latitudes that air might not be able blow down there? I imagine sun intensity has something to do with it also.

Why do people exaggerate how cold Italy gets during winter?
by rossifer2010- 1 follower

- 1.3k views
Its always been peculiar to me since I started looking at posts in this forum; people keep talking of this "severe cold" and "drought" the Italian South sees that is supposedly absent in every other subtropical environment. It is a notion I do not understand; as we all know, Sicily, and Apulia make up a significant area of the Italian South, and both of those areas are Zone 10 climates at least. Even in other parts of the Italian South, winter minima often aren't that cold; in Palermo, and Catania, for instance, it is rare for winter temps to fall below the mid 30s, and when they do, a quick warm-up to a mild afternoon is almost always ensued. Those cities are solid USDA …

Why Do Some Beaches Have Clear Water While Others Don't?

Why I got hammered
by osideterry- 2 replies

I'm not going to post photos of my sick collection of toasted palms. Plenty like them on this site. What's been bugging me is how I got hit so much harder than other yards in my own neighborhood. I decided to hit the topos, and then made this lil' show-and-tell map. The San Luis Rey River is at 90ft above sea level at it's closest point to my house. I filled in all land below 100ft above seal level in blue. My yard is the red dot near the center of the map. Imagine a river of cold air coming out of that narrow channel to the northeast, and then spreading west and south. After winter lows of 28F, 28F and now 26F, I'm conceding to Zone 9B. (By the way, my map is…
