USDA climate zone map updated

Do people know about this? Apparently the map was updated in November to reflect the last 30 years of climate data, and quite a few areas have been upgraded. Link for those who can access Washington Post articles: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/interactive/2024/climate-change-backyards-plants-birds-migration/?itid=hp_opinions_p002_f001 And a link to the new map: https://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/?itid=lk_inline_enhanced-template You can search for your zip code and see whether it has changed. Sadly (or not), our zone remains 10a, cooler than most of San Francisco which is 10b.

USDA Hardiness zone is not a good way to have a abstract view on minimum temperatures 1 2

USDA hardiness zone is calculated by the average annual minimum. I know that temperature is not the only factor that kills palms in the winter.... but lets take extract only the temperature factor. I consider is a bad way to calculate someones minimum climatic temperature. let see the following example year 1: -4C year 2: 3C year 3: 5C year 4: 4C year 5: 4C so this would mean that the average annual minimum would be 2.4C or hardiness zone 10b If someone plants a 10b palm would be fine for a couple of years until that one cold year will strike back (in our example -4C which would correspond to hardiness zone 8b) and the palm will fry! As many palm lovers have se…

USDA Zone 10 in Arizona?
by insipidtoast- 15 replies

This USDA zone map perplexed me the other day. http://www.arborday.org/media/zones.cfm If you look at the area around the Colorado River between California and Arizona, there is clearly a large landmass labelled as zone 10. How is that possible so far inland? I'm skeptical about the map, but it seems other maps corroborate this evidence: http://www.cliftyview.com/img/usda_map_full.jpg As seen there as well, most of the area east and southeast from Palo Verde is labelled as zone 10. http://www.arborday.org/media/zones.cfm

USDA's Temperature Zone Map

Hi to all this fine January late afterrnoon!: I am seeking obscure information from my fellow palm fanciers! :: I was wondering if anyone has ever seen (and know where I might find) a USDA Minimum Temperature Map of the Americas that has gradations including areas with Zone 12: (50-60 F.); Zone 13: (60-70 F.) and Zone 14: (70-80 F.) Or does this extension not exist. As you might know, my farm in NW Panama has never had temperatures lower than 64 F. so I guess that some map somewhere must have it colored in as Zone 13??? I would love to print out that kind of a map if there were such an animal. Any guidance would be relished! Luego, Pablito

Using palm species to accurately assess USDA zone

I purchased property just south of Daytona Beach on a barrier I am located about 1/2 mi from the Atlantic ocean on the east and about the same distance from the intracoastal waterway to the West. According to the most updated USDA zone maps this area is listed as 9b. I have a theory that where I am may actually be 10a due to some of the true tropical plants growing in the area. ie. Coconut palms with 12 ft of trunk showing. I have planted 107 different species of palms across my property. It has been very fun collecting, planting, and growing the palms. I hope that the performance of the palms will be an accurate indicator of the true USDA zone that i am in . Volusi…

Using supplemental heat source for frost protection
by WestCoastGal- 12 replies

Question about using supplemental heating for frost/freeze protection on your palms or plants. This is our first year with the yard being fully landscaped and haven't had to worry about it before now. The palms we planted in our yard are cold hardy for our area (Zone 9b, Sunset 14) so not concerned about them during this upcoming cold spell here in the SF bay area. However to complement the tropical look of our palms we did plant out some more frost tender plants this past year like Strelitzia reginae (orange birds of paradise, cold hardy range 25-30?) which have been looking great in bloom and near bloom and I really hate to see them damaged at this point. Picked up a…

Watching the Local TV news this AM , and they all were showing the Daytona Temperature at 47 deg , while at my home it was 60.7 . So , here are some ( a bit later ) shots of PWS's in Daytona , Orlando , Gainesville via Weather Underground . I know we've talked about this before , many times . This is a classic condition , when the winds are beginning to shift to onshore , during the 2nd day or so of a Cold front , and of course would be different with a NW wind flow etc . Our official reporting station does not represent the majority of town very well . In this day and age , it ought to beep possible to present an average Temp. to represent an area …

Very Cold Late February Night In Corpus Christi
by Mr. Coconut Palm- 29 replies

We had a cold front blow through yesterday with a small line of rain showers here (very little rain though), but we still got into the 80'sF after the front passed, but last night was very chilly with a low of 46F at the airport (normal low of 52F this time of year) and down to 44.4 at my place this morning, when I should be a little warmer about 3F or 4F warmer than the airport. But tonight, I am already down to 42.4F at 11:00 pm after a high of 70.8F this afternoon. The airport is predicted to get down to 35F to 37F tomorrow morning, and the dew point there a little while ago was 21F! My humidity level is only 44%, so I am worried that my yard will also be in the mid…

Winds... strong and gusty north to northeast winds will develop this evening and continue through Friday... as strong offshore flow develops around the northwest side of the system. Strongest winds will most likely be in Orange County... the inland Empire and the San Bernardino County mountains... where wind gusts could exceed 70 mph at times... especially through and below passes and canyons. Strong winds are also likely in the apple and Lucerne valleys. Strong winds are also expected in San Diego County... but will develop later than the areas to the north. Strongest winds are expected late tonight and Thursday... when damage to trees and power…

Comming back from Fresno, it started raining like crazy. There was hail, lightning, and heavy rain. I was driving on 5, and nothing I would expect. Its to bad that I packed the camera in the trunk. Nothing to serious, but it was interesting to see this in California. Some of this monsoonal moisture is making close. I have measured trace ammounts of rain 3 times this july. Extreme rarity it would seem...

Warm 2019 In South Texas
by LF-TX- 2 replies

2019 was a good year for tropical plant lovers in the Rio Grande Valley. Information that is available on the National Weather Service Brownsville, TX website sheds light on how warm 2019 was in the eastern RGV. After reviewing the Monthly Climate Summaries for Brownsville (the Airport area to be exact), I found that November 12th 2019 set the record low for the year at 38°. January 2019 was the coldest month overall at a mean temperature of 62.8°. For 2019, Brownsville fell into the 10B hardiness zone! Additionally, we were only 1.2° shy of falling into Köppen tropical climate classification for the year! Definitely loved this relatively warm time, fortunately our …

Warm October day
by Tyrone- 3 replies

Well I live in probably one of the mildest climates in Western Australia and maybe even mainland Australia. Last summer I didn't record a maximum over 33.9C and that occurred on dec 9 2017. Well today we hit 33.3C in October not even summer or late spring. Humidity was way down again unusual for here and my irrigation system is on flat out tonight to rehydrate things. I felt like I was back up in Perth but even Perth is usually milder than that in October. I'm sitting outside now at 7.30pm enjoying a few beers listening to the sprinklers and chorus of all different species of frogs in 26C heat. Loving the balminess of it all, but if this is spring, summer is going to be a…

Warm season, Southern Hemisphere
by Tyrone- 28 replies

I just thought I'd start a weather topic that is about the warm season in the Southern Hemisphere, but if your up in the North, feel free to take part too. We just had the warmest night so far of 23C after a day of 31C, but no thunderstorms mentioned actually came. They are predicting a humid 30C today, and at 8.30am it's already past 28C. I watered like mad last night, so things will start to get into overdrive in the garden with this. My little R oleracea is now about as tall as me and is pushing about 3cm of spear a day. Going at this rate it will have pushed 7 or 8 new leaves by the time winter arrives. This isn't bad weather for us this early in the season. La…

Warm tropical weather

Well down at 35S on the SW coast of Australia you pray for warmth and summer. We almost always have cool nights even after a hot day. Well yesterday we had a warm and humid 27.4C day and then thunderstorms and heavy rain all night from around 6pm. My weather station bottomed out at 16.9C for a very short time but it was above 20C virtually all night. At 2am it was 21.8C. This morning at 7.30am it's 22.8C dead calm with 74% RH and the sound of more thunder rolling in. Just went for a walk in the garden and everything's damp warm and humid and the palms are just opening leaves everywhere. Happy days. I hope summer is going to be just like this.

Just yesterday, as some may already know, NOAA provided their temperature and precipitation predictions for the 2017-2018 winter season. According to their prediction, it looks like a good chunk of the state of Texas is bound to see warmer than average temperatures during this coming winter; good news for us palm lovers! On the other side of the coin, it also looks like, unfortunately, the Texas coast will see below average precipitation. If these predictions hold up, hopefully us Texas won’t have to worry so much about severe artic blasts rearing their ugly heads on our tropical plants. While supplemental watering may be needed, there is no need for dread - we’re no stra…
