I've read on forums here that Brookings, Oregon is about the farthest north you will see CIDP on the west coast, but are there any grown in Portland or Seattle? Those cities have winter averages and minimums that are very similar to London and other parts of southern UK that have CIDP and maybe other phoenix species. Though I realize the PNW cities do get more rain in the coldest months than London, which may be the problem. But I was also wondering about some of the rain shadow towns up there, like Sequim? They're a little cooler but only get 16 inches/year.

I was looking at weather.com and the weather doesnt look likes going to be pretty. Noaa calls for snow showers lowering down to around 1000 with lows in the mid 20's around January 11. The next days it says it will be in the mid to upper 20's. I have found weather.com to be very conservative. Weather is calling for a low of 36 in SF. weather.com also says mid 20's throughout central valley. Just a heads up folks.

Anyone else DRY while the rest get wet? 1 2

Living in Tampa Bay, we always go through ups and downs when it comes to rains. This winter, I received a bounty, and considering the cold, not when I wanted it. Now that summer has set in, I am missing almost all of the rains. In fact, I will be going out to water after 7pm as things are wilting rather badly. Last Saturday we got 2" in less than hour. Since then, nothing but a few showers and HOT HOT SUNNY. 80F this morning's low, 91F high. When I need it most - I miss it! It thundered every day since Monday, storms were pouring on inland areas and to the east. Now they say "drying up" this week! ARGHHHHHHHHHHH Anyone else go through this? It is so frustrating. Just a 1…

Cold cold cold here in the lower midwest...tonight, we're looking at a low of 15F with highs in the 30's all week...Last night, we reached a low of 23 at my place. Wind destroyed my palm protection last night, so only one of my washingtonias was protected...too bad the dog decided to sleep on it. Snapped the trunk off...words can't express the anger I had for this dog...Anyway, back on topic...fronds tied up on everything, blue plastic barrels placed over the top with c9 lights underneath...larger palm (butia) will be wrapped with lights and a thick wool blanket...wish me luck!! Ugh, should not be this cold:((

Anyone familiar with Lorida, Florida?

Super excited, I found some land I’m interested in, near Lake Istokpoga and Lorida. This is zone 9b but curious if anyone is familiar with the area. Is it a low 9b, middle or high? Lorida is northeast of the lake by a couple miles so probably doesn’t have a microclimate. I’m going down there next weekend to check it out. I love fishing and this lake has some nice bass and LOTS of gators. My plan is to get the property, start a new garden and build a cottage over the next couple years. I can’t find anything affordable near me in Brevard county, except swamp acreage.

Anyone here from the Colorado River area?

Hello everyone, I have always been a fan of palm trees, bamboo and tropical plants. I was born and raised in Seattle where I started a palm nursery in my back yard, I had over 400 Chinese Windmill palms growing.....had to get rid of them when I moved. Now I live in Arizona, Mohave Valley along the Colorado River. Elevation is 500ft +/- and growing zone 9B/10A, we get sub-freezing temps, but not a hard/deep freeze and not for very long, usually just a few min-to hours just before and just after dawn. Soil conditions are a mix of clay and sand, very few rocks. Our water table is just 15 feet down or so and the well water has salt (about 1200ppm) along with calciu…

I wouldn't normally post anything on weather conditions like La Nina and El Nino since I just know the very basics of it, but the picture that the AP has included in this article should make you chuckle a bit. https://www.yahoo.com/news/weather-forecast-la-nina-may-last-winter-164559134.html

Apologize For Arctic Blast
by KMartin- 18 replies

For those of you that don't know. I am Kevin Martin. I was the guy that was in the articles about the arctic blast coming. Not sure how many panicked and hope that didn't do that to people. Was only helping in how a cold air mass was coming down, which did in fact bring rare snows to areas that normally wouldn't see it, like Corona / Temecula in upper spots, Banning, and hey even Vegas, so this was about right. True blasts are of the drier sources, such as 1990. Those are brutal to our plant and tree projects. Being a weatherman I enjoy figuring out if these conditions will harm our work. Luckily this one wasn't a drier cold. eek. In Corona, here, it gets th…

April Weather Thread 1 2 3

...hemispheres that is... Anyway, what is going on where you are? California? Australia? England? South Africa? New Zealand? Anyone? A summertime pattern of daytime heat and humidty followed by evening thunderstorms is in place right now. Last day of March and first 2 days of April have seen widespread showers and thunderstorms across the southern 2/3 of FL. Actually kinda' strange to have this pattern so early. Could the weather be forshadowing a nasty hurricane season ??? Palms are loving this spring so far and I like this weather as long as it lasts but I am sure we will have an extended dry spell coming before the real summer rain pattern sets in.

Arctic Oscillation

I was just reading from the NWS how the AO has entrenched itself once again, up north, near Greenland. It is pulling down cold, cold air and overriding the La Nina effects. However, this year is different because La Nina is keeping the air dry, so the rains are fewer and far between. It states that this next freeze event will once again spare the coast (mostly) because of the flow out of the N and NW. After a brief respite, more cold air is on the way toward Christmas as it cycles. Now - let us all gather and move that damn thing outta there! Winter has not even arrived yet and once again, I am sick of it! I spent the entire week with little heat in my classroom. I taught…

Arctic Storm Octavia Florida Damage Report 1 2

This thread's purpose is to report palm damage around Florida. It can be utilized as a informational gathering tool all in one thread. Easier than sifting through all the individual threads that were sure to pop up. Thread can facilitate venting if it will make you feel better. My garden - low 42 F. Surprisingly a Coccothrinax montana is not looking very happy. I'm sure that the strong winds were a factor along with the cold. It will survive, just beat up looking. Licuala grandis - another looking very unhappy. These are pretty sensitive to cold. It was in the ground in 2009-10 winter so its survival is pretty certain. Moose out

Desmond Muirhead's book on Palm's reported that freezing temperatures had been recorded on the pier at Santa Catalina Island and accordingly no location in California could be considered "frost-free".The discussion on this board suggests that their are many micro-climates in California that are "frost-free".Where are the micro-climates in California that may be most suitable for the growing of coconut palms?

Are Miami's winters milder?
by Wizardmiami- 4 replies

I am located southwest of Miami International Airport and low temperatures here track a few degrees lower than the airport. I use two indicators, the lowest winter temperature and the number of nights the temperature falls below 50 (my arbitrary indicator) I use 50 as a benchmark based on the point I will see leaf burn or stress on various palms or ornamental shrubs. The two graphs reflect minimums back to 1957 as does the "cold night" chart. Some notable points- 1. Lows below 50 are less frequent (average now 9.58 nights a year- 1962-2022) 2. The last time the airport went below 32 was Christmas 1989 3. Average annual low 40.14 (1965-20…

Are the zones still the same?
by Palmy- 11 replies

As many of you know, there has been a very cold freeze in the west. My question is do zones change becuase of it getting so cold. After this freeze am I still zone 9b, considering it was 21f? I hear it was in the mid/upper teens in the 1990 freeze and the zones did not change. As much as I would love to say Im 9b, its very hard to grow 9b species here. Still 9b? 4 days of under 25F, 3 just recently and 1 earlier this year.

Are there any other Zone 5a palm growers out there?

I live in Ottawa, Canada. I have been growing palms for about seven years in pots. This year I am trying my first palm planted in the ground and overwintering it outdoors (with protection, of course). It is a washingtonia robusta. If it survives the winter, I will be planting two or three more in the spring. I also want to try a couple of Trachycarpus Fortunei. I am also trying to overwinter some musa basjoo and a dracanea by covering them with mulch. I also have a yucca which has been outside for three years now with no protection. If you have experience with any of these in zone 5a, or less, I would love to hear your experiences. If you want to check out my yard on YouT…

Are you suffering from Climate Grief?
by Xerarch- 13 replies
Climate Grief: A human psychological condition wherein a person suffers emotional distress caused by the inability of local climatic conditions to grow desired plant species. These species usually include palms or other plants of a tropical nature, therefore, a person living in Hawaii would have very little reason to suffer from climate grief. Most poor saps on PalmTalk suffer at least minor symptoms. Symptoms may include but are not limited to: agitation, stress, and sleepless nights during a cold event; repeated, compulsive buying of palms that are known not to thrive in the local climate; spending large amounts of resources and time attempting to protect non-a…

Areca palms turning yellow.
by Mr. Flagg- 3 replies

Hi, first time poster here and palm tree novice. I live in Oceanside Ca about 8 miles east of the Ocean. I planted 7 Areca palms this last summer in August, they are about 4 tall. They were very green when I planted them now they are turning yellow and some of the leafs are turning brown and frizzled at the tips. I have irrigation that runs 3 times a week for 15 minutes at 3am. Could they be overwatered? I flowed the instructions the tree seller gave me as far a fertilizer goes. They are 3’ from a tall fence and they do get sun most of the day until late afternoon when it goes behind my house. Is this normal for these palms in winter in my location or am I killing t…
