A blessing, and a curse.. that time of year again
by Silas_Sancona- 4 replies

As mentioned in passing by other local members, the forth coming week ahead looks brutal here in the desert.. Really, this time of year in the Sonoran Desert, and entire Southwest is both something we do and perhaps don't look forward to. June here is typically the hottest and driest month, on average. While daily highs in the lower 100s, and very low humidity/ dew point readings are typical, the exceptional heat building atm is not. As suggested, Phoenix may indeed reach.. if not surpass 120f by Tuesday and/ or Wednesday. The hottest recorded temp via the official weather station at Sky Harbor is 122f recorded on June 20th, 1990. These days, with all the neighborhoo…

A CHANGE COMING? -warmer?
by gsytch- 31 replies

I was just watching my 5 o'clock local news, and our weather man, Paul Dellegatto, stated that he sees a significant change in the weather pattern FOR THE WHOLE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE in about 7 days. I went to Accuweather and they haven't got the message yet. He stated that the AO (Arctic Oscillation) causing all this continued cold and cold fronts will begin moving, thus changing the pattern. He actually, NOW HEAR THIS, put the 8 on the LEFT! Like in 80F???? Normal???? Today was absolutely clear, blue skies, but only 66F yet it felt soooo good in the sun while eating lunch. Dare we actually hope? Greg

For the first time since forecasters began recording data — at least 132 years — the mercury did not reach 70 degrees in downtown Los Angeles for the entire month of February. https://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-cold-february-20190228-story.html And still no 70s in sight with lots of low 60s next week! This winter will be remembered for decades.

I looked on Weather Underground on my computer and looked at the current temperatures map, and where it is warmer right now along the coast basically shows where the climate changes from "Mid Atlantic" to truly Southern.

A little tinkle of rain in So-Cal

Yesterday I came home to find that it had rained while I was away. Not a lot, alas, but rain nevertheless, which fell during the night. The sky was a proper overcast for January, temps in the mid-60s F for a high. This is, of course, far far from being anything like adequate. I talked to my father and brother in Ohio, and they told me their cold spell is finally loosening its grip, and I note that Atlanta is thawing, too. Gonna do another rain dance, wash the car, paint silk with watercolors in the open . . . How about the rest of you? Any rain?

The 2014 El Nino could be a record monster El Nino, experts predict. See http://www.motherjones.com/environment/2014/04/this-years-el-nino-could-grow-monster. Global warming is in full swing, and this monster is only going to contribute to more record warmth. It's gonna be a scorching hot Summer out West, and it's gonna be a warm wet Winter as well. Predictions of the nasty El Nino have already affected the Indian stock market, stay tuned, could be some serious carnage out there.

A New Cold Front Sweeps Through 1 2
by _Keith- 61 replies

Another quickie front will bring ours lows to 38 tonight in So. Louisiana. This is colder than normal for us, but not severe. These early cold snaps start the harden off process for us, so I don't mind them at all. It is back to the 80s again in a few days, but I was out eating some Citrus off the tree and all I can say is brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

A New Subtropical Low?

Check this out. See if there's any beginning of a warm core counter-clockwise rotation (from a stalled cold front) off St. Lucie County, Florida after 12 noon EDT this 03-19-09?? It wouldn't be impossible, would it? Where's Happ? We need a meteorologist's PRO analysis. On the day that "traditionally" swallows return to San Juan Capistrano mission, O.C. Excellente! Pablito

A Nice March Here!

I just cannot "diss" the weather in March here very much. It usually is comfortable both for palms (and other tropicals) & its citizens! In 28 years, I've never reported a March that was anything but a "10!" A rainforest garden of Almeria? Challenging or just plain insanity?
by JasminInYarpshire- 7 replies
- 1.1k views
OK, so my first post here, but hopefully an interesting one! I'm wondering how possible it would be to plan a reasonably fast growing "rainforest" garden in Almeria? The climate data for the area is very temping (to a European!) for a tropical planting. This is the climate data for the area from AEMET (Spanish meteorological dept.) for Almeria airport, which is on the coastal edge of the plain, immediately east of the city at 21m ASL (36.50N 2.21W) Things which I find encouraging are the very high levels of sunshine, which should help soil temperatures stay high even when ambient temperature is sub-optimal, which I *hope* will mean that cold intolerant plants may st…

A rainy day in Daytona Beach- video

There's several more days of rain expected . I've had about 5.6" here since last Friday , including one burst of 3.2" in a little over one hour . That caused some localized flooding here in Holly Hill . During that one , some water got into the garage , which unfortunately sits below the elevation of the house and driveway . You may need to right click the video , to make it run . Rainy day in Holly Hill... by Bill H, on Flickr

A rare sight out west... Hurricane Kay
by Silas_Sancona- 22 replies

With the worst of the heat looking to back off a bit across the west over the next few days, attention turns to potential impacts from a rarely experienced weather phenomenon along the west coast of the U.S. While remnants of dying storms do spread clouds and higher humidity levels, the occasional, brief tropical shower / Dry / high-based thunderstorm outbreak across the state from time to time through the summer and fall months almost each year, significant effects from Tropical systems that manage to reach near shore waters of California are extremely rare. While it has happened, direct hits from legit Tropical storms / Hurricane strength systems are noted in Cali…

A record setting year in this part of Costa Rica
by Jeff in St Pete- 11 replies

A friend has been living in this area of Costa Rica for 35 years and has been keeping rainfall records the entire time. I talked to him today by phone and as usual the conversation led to weather. He said that 2009 was the driest year in his 35 years of living here. During the entire year of 2009 we only received 179.5 inches (4,559.3 mm) of rain. Our normal average is 240 to 260 inches (6,096 mm to 6,604 mm) per year. In addition, during the entire month of October (normally our wettest month), we only received 17.5 inches (444.5 mm) - We normally receive 40-45 inches (1,016 mm - 1,143 mm) in October. He also mentioned that our record breaking wettes…

Not sure if any of our fellow weather nerds had heard but looks like the extremely popular Cat. 6 Weather Blog over on Weather Underground has been ended by the corporate powers that be over there.. Pretty sad to read this earlier this afternoon.. That said, both Jeff Masters, who originally started the blog, known as "WunderBlog" back in the day, and his frequent co- pilot / contributor of blog articles, Bob Henson will be starting a new blog over called "Eye on the Storm" over on Yale Climate Connections site.. so no, their great articles won't come to an end. Bob also has his twitter account. Jeff masters apparently is on Twitter.. but looks like he doesn't use …

A San Francisco ..."Monsoon.."
by Silas_Sancona- 1 reply

As suggested over in the "Current Temperatures" Thread yesterday, a surge of moisture ( 2nd across CA. yesterday ) had been forecast to makes it's way from down by Santa Barbara and make a rare visit to a region of CA. which rarely gets to enjoy summer thunderstorm activity. Around/ after 2AM, compact but vigorous storms came ashore around Monterey/Santa Cruz and continue marching north/northeast across the Bay Area towards/ over Sacramento and the northern half of CA. While not completely unheard of, Thunderstorm activity across this area of the state is normally brief, weak and something that happens only once or twice every few years. Bigger storm events are ev…

A very wet start to winter in the tropics ..
by aussiearoids- 13 replies

Oh well the 1 week drought had to end sooner or later .. been pouring all day . Had several heavy showers down the beach yesterday , so the Monster market was a bit of a wash out . I was a man on a mission and donned raincoat and gumboots as I had some very exotic fruit trees to pick up . Really hope it does not get to cold this winter , don't want recent plantings freezing to death , BRRRRR it is a cool 22C at the moment ... I may have to put on a jacket . yeh yeh , I know what a softie , but once you are completely 'troppo' I think your blood turns to a thick treacle like substance and needs high temps or RUM to circulate properly.
