Last night I got down to 27.6F. Hard freeze. Much of the ground was frozen till noon in the shade. Warmed up quickly when the sun came up. Scared me. Good thing all my cold tender palms were inside the greenhouse. Temp right now is 34F. Falling fast.

Cairns in trouble
by Walter John- 3 replies

One of the tropical star towns of Australia, and the world for that matter, Cairns, is copping a caning of late. Huge rainfalls combined with high tides have caused flooding and that is following on from another scary outbreak of Dengue fever. Perhaps the NQers might like to comment, you there Mikey, Michael and Bill, what's happening ?

Well, they are predicting an El Niño but seem much more confident on this one. I'll believe it when I see it, but we might have our drought worries taken care of. http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-32704506

California Fires 2016
by WestCoastGal- 0 replies

I took a look at the wunderground map with the Fire button activated and was surprised to see all the fires ongoing in the State of California right now. We have been occasionally impacted by the Soberanes Fire's smoke here for a few days at a time (Big Sur State Park) since it started but fortunately have been spared much of the dense smoke. Heard that San Francisco could even smelled the smoke the other day. Looking at the latest CalFire/USFS maps I have to wonder if the whole park is going to burn. Found this blog a few weeks ago, bigsurkate, published by Kate Woods Novos with nice updates of general info, fire maps, personal stories and photos if you're interested: ht…

California freeze data

Comments and info are spread all over the place here on this board. I'm proposing a specific thread that we can share data re location , elevation, duration, lows/highs, wind/no wind, as well as effects, good or bad. We need to learn from our losses..share what worked and what didn't. Also visit freinds garden who aren't PalmTalkers, and gather info. Kinda like CRDB, but Calif specific. Lets share ideas on this thread, and maybe post the DATA thread as a sticky once we figure out format..thoughts? PS..sorry I let you guys down with no 'Countdown to disaster...Trilogy' last night...I just didn't want to play anymore

California Freeze Watch 2014

Oh no, here we go again, I was crossing my fingers I would not be posting this, because as of yesterday, most of the various models runs all showed the cold airmass to move East and bypass California. The outliers showing the arctic airmass heading into California were discarded. However, several of the other models have now switched to this more disastrous solution. There is a potential for a hard freeze Friday into Saturday night in California. It may not come to pass given the high uncertainty in the models, but better be prepared. See the NWS discussion re-posted below. Either way, the rest of the week features some definite frosts every Morning until Saturday, an…

While my family in Kansas City is complaining about how Summer never came, we are having a late surge of serious heat with humidity. Check out these (Oceanside Airport) numbers for the past 2 weeks: Aug 22 83F Aug 23 82F Aug 24 83F Aug 25 91F Aug 26 96F Aug 27 100F Aug 28 95F Aug 29 96F Aug 30 96F Aug 31 88F Sept 1 86F Sept 2 95F Sept 3 96F Sept 4 86F (unofficial) Keep in mind I live 4 miles and 4 degrees hotter inland. Did I mention the humidity? And the lack of air conditioning?

California heat wave breaking

California seeks energy conservation for 10th day in heat wave (msn.com) This has been a baddie. Other heat waves have been hotter, but a lot shorter. In Sept. 2020 I had about 112 F on Labor Day weekend (and a lot of people bought palms anyway!) but it was only a couple-three days. This time it's been hot since Sept. 1 with no letup yet. Supposedly that 'cane from Mexico will cool things down, but we'll see. Any one have any heat wave stories?

California Highs

This question is for the real meteorologists on the board (and of course those who want to take on the other obvious meaning of the title)...... Why do these large high pressure systems sit over the state for such extended periods? What is the mechanism for their creation/destruction? Are they occurring more or less frequently? Anytthing else that is informative or helpful in understanding? and yes, I understand the hot air that is emitted from Sacramento, gentlemen, no need to enhanve that part of my understanding..... Thanks!

California November Weather Thread 1 2
by osideterry- 47 replies

November is a month where our all time record highs are well into the 90s and our lows have seen 29F (Oceanside Airport). We have more sunshine days in November than any other month of the year. At 11:45am my sensor is reading 88.2F, and it was 47F at 7 this morning. It's too hot to do yard work, and so dry you keep dehydrating which can lead to a nasty headache. Loving the heat though, and living with the lows.

California Reservoir Levels

With all the rains we have been getting the last couple of days, I thought it would be interesting to see what our water situation looks like. Here is a very useful link that shows how much water is currently in our reservoirs: California Reservoir Levels We are currently OVER 100% of historical average. That's without today's values. Here in Huntington Beach, CA, we have accumulated over 1.25" of rain for 12/6/2018. Haven't seen this level of rain in a while.

California v Arizona v Texas

Cruising around on Weather Underground and checking some of the Hotter locations. Where is it hotter? I checked a site in Death Valley that topped out a few days ago at 117.3F with a low of about 90F. Yuma checked in with a high around 109F and a low near 90F but the humidity levels were substantially higher. Specifically, California humidity was generally at it's highest around 20%. As it moved towards the High temperature, the humidity dropped to around 10%. In Yuma, the humidity was around 40% but moved down to around 23% at 109F. Checked out a little place in Texas called Hearne. It had a High of 110F on July 2,2009. However, the humidity was around 50% but dipp…

August 20, 2020 3 AM a wall of furry fire storm bears down on my garden like a tidal wave. Twelve hours later there was a smoldering chard landscape as far as the eye could see. This story may take a while to explain so I will spill it out in pieces as there is so much to say. I began my garden when I joined the Society in 1977. Many of my palms came from the Seed Bank at that time. Others came from my collections of travels to remote places. My garden contains about 100+ species/varieties of palms, some 400 or so trees about a 28 acre property. Many are now 30- 40 years old. Basically palms are survivors! A good percentage retained small canopies that never burne…

I had two really windy storms come through this month, getting 50MPH+ gusts on each. And luckily besides some toppled bananas etc, this is the worst damage to my palms. How did everyone else fair?
