Best/Warmest Microclimate Along the SoCal Coast?
by Alex High- 3 replies

Hello all, I have recently been reading a lot about people's attempts, failures, and also wonderful successes zone pushing with many tropical and less hardy palms in Southern California, and it got me wondering: what is the best/warmest microclimate along the Southern California coast? I have been monitoring the weather in several different cities along the coast for the past couple months during winter to see which stays the warmest, and from what I've found it seems the San Pedro area near Long Beach has highest lows, notably higher than inland Los Angeles and San Diego as well as many other coastal cities nearby. Since San Pedro is facing south, as the coast juts …

It won't quite be the 2010/11 freeze we had, but it is a 10 year freeze event. I have been bringing in in potted plants, and trying to decide what action, if any to take on others. I will let quite a few of them go. I am really on the fence about whether to brings in those 6 new Mules, still in pots. The are all tucked together, with bags of Oak Leaves piled around them. Still they are investment I don't want to loose, not even one of them. But, they are kind of large. So far the wife is amenable to sharing the home for a few days. This is our latest forecast. Trending is still going downward. How are you looking for the Big Freeze of 2014?

Way way early - and still a lot of advertised uncertainty - so let's hope they are wrong. But if they are right, this would get dicey again. They have it as a hurricane Sat, poised to make a direct hit.

So, So-Callians how much are you getting? I'm in the Dark Tower and it's coming down hard, since early morning. Forecasters call it light rain. Bring on the heavy. (Hope it's over for the PSSC meeting. Rain or no rain, I'm going!)

Blizzard coming

Get ready for the blizzard if you are in it's path. The weather is generally poor in the SE US into Thursday night. By Friday night, the blizzard will start to take hold starting in eastern Tennessee even down into Mississippi. After that a swath of the blizzard will pound the Mid-Atlantic including D.C. with up to two feet of snow and strong winds. Ed in Houston

The news is grim, but preparation is key. Tomorrow night from about 9PM to 9am, 28d F and possibly lower in our colder valley locations(like mine). Then down to 30d F the next day, and 31d F after that. My afternoons the next three says will be protecting the palms, plumeria, and hibiscus all over my yard! And the banana and pineapple. The last prolonged below freezing temps here wiped out a ton of ficus trees and burnt a lot of green vegetation into the ground. More to come...

I planted one in 94 and its nearly 7' tall. Roughly when will it flower? I appreciate that will depend on many factors. It is in a warm, sunny position. I have certainly seen a few in flower at 10' and once in Spain at only 8' or so. Any opinions or is that an impsosible question? Many thanks for your help guys. Regardez Juan

Bright lights in the Sky

As someone who has studied weather about as long as i have all things green and leafy, i have always been fascinated by the countless ways the sky can offer up something interesting at any moment. From the look of frost on the ground at sunrise on a cold winter morning, to how menacing the sky can become while storm casing, and avoiding an approaching tornado and softball- sized Hail, there is always something worth looking up for. When it comes to some of the more"optical" things that appear above our heads, some, like Haloes and Rainbows are pretty common, others are rare enough that you'd have to be in the right place at the right time to observe. Some are so uncom…

Brisbane vs. Byron Bay
by Laisla87- 12 replies

Hi all Just wondering for those Aussies amongst us with experience in NE NSW/SEQ, which climate is more subtropical and conducive to growing warm climate plants. Logic would, at first instance, indicate Brisbane as it is further north but observing the temperature variations, Byron Bay is more stable (warmer lows/cooler highs) while Brisbane is more extreme (i.e. 12 - 25 vs 15 - 22). I do see more Plumeria obtusas in Brisbane but more Heliconia psittacorums in BB. Then again, the temperature readings in Brisbane may vary according to suburb and proximity to the coast. I'd be interested to know what is your take on it. Adam

Brookings Oregon is a southern coast town. Sunset 17, zone 9b they hit 99F/37.2C today 9/25/2016. The old record was 93 back in 1937. I new it was going to be HOT there today when I saw 80F in Brookings at 9:30am. Normal high this time of year is 68F. LOL! I hear the bay area also got into the 90’s.

Brownsville Climate 1 2 3

Texas, being a big state, has a wide range of climates. You have arid towards the west, subtropical towards the east, colder temps north, and warmer temps south. For a long time I’ve been questioning Köppen’s classification for Brownsville / Eastern Cameron county. At NOAA’s averages for this area, we fall into a subtropical climate. Now, what troubles me is the plain, visible differences in the vegetation of Brownsville/surrounding areas to that of areas outside of the lower RGV. For those that have visited/ are natives to this area, it’s clear that Brownsville is visibly a lot more tropical that most areas of the Valley outside of the Lower Valley. Once you leave north …

Brrr it got cold in Houston(Katy)

Hey Ya’ll I am new here and I am looking for a current status that I could talk about my Queen palms. June 2017 I had five 15’ Queen Palms planted around my pool. (I had 4 there earlier but lost them all to a freeze) In December we knew snow and a freeze was coming so my tree guy wrapped all four of them in burlap...4 layers thick up to the fronds. Well..it froze and it snowed. Then in January it froze again. The fronds are brown and several are sagging because they have broken. I called my tree guy who planted them and he said “We are not going to trim yet. Although they look ugly we need to wait.” Do you think he is correct? I know I’m not jumping in my pool…

Weird weather this winter. This a placeholder for Monday and Tuesday nights in California as a low drops down with really cold air. Today is in the 70s, by tomorrow the temps will be dropping sharply. Average date for last possible frost for my area is Jan 31st, so this is certainly freaky weather. I think it could possibly have some implications on agriculture as well since it is unusual. Currently my winter low so far was a night of 32F. Forecasts say 28 and 29! Oh well. One bonus getting hit so late is it should help with recovery once it warms up again. I didn’t want to have to clean up the bananas after a freeze since they are still up. Other than that, I …
