Normally I don't post weather concerns on the main forum but believe all California gardeners should take measures to protect palms from wind damage. An incredible amount of rainfall will occur this week like we haven't experience since 2005. Our normal "yearly" rainfall totals may be reached in this coming week. ...SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT... ...EXTENDED PERIOD OF SIGNIFICANT RAIN AND MOUNTAIN SNOW NEXT WEEK FOR SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA... A STORMY PATTERN IS SETTING UP ACROSS THE EASTERN PACIFIC OCEAN THAT WILL BRING PERIODS OF MODERATE TO HEAVY RAIN AND MOUNTAIN SNOW TO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MOST OF NEXT WEEK AND POSSIBLY INTO THE FOLLOWING WEEK. "Hurrcun Wisdom" and Hebert's Boxes
by bubba- 5 replies

Horrible unspeakable tragedies have been experienced throughout the Caribbean that marginalize any particular hurricane observations by individuals. However, long-time Floridians did have ideas and criteria that they used to judge hurricanes that may have an effect on their area. "Hurrcun Wisdom" from my Granddad and other similar long-timers in the Palm Beaches, viewed a specific time-frame ( Aug.15-Sept. 15) as the period known for the incredibly vicious hurricanes that moved eastward towards Florida. We now know that these are the powerful Cape Verde's that are born as thunderstorms off the African coast that passed through the Cape Verde Islands. My Granddad and …

Buffalo, NY is buried again. Reminds me of 1977 and 1978, when it snowed just like that, only a bit later in the year. I was in Cleveland, down-lake, and it was bad enough there.

"RAINY" dry season
by gsytch- 23 replies

This is the heart of our dry season, yet this weekend we had another 5" of rain. This gives us well over 8" for March. Jan and Feb were also above normal. March has also been on the cooler side, little in the way of heat. Not cold, but not warm. Is this a pattern? It seems like the weather is wacky everywhere.

Climatologist from Jet Propulsion Lab points out the cold nature of these storms. For example, recorded the first sub-50 minimum for the month last night when it was partly cloud [49F\ 9.4C]. That's cold during storm conditions. Colleagues: Here is my take on whether these storms are El Nino. I'm interested in your ideas on this. While the rest of the country has been battered by strong, cold outbreaks bringing storms over the past two weeks, snow and frigid temperatures, California remained mild and dry. Now it's our turn. Riding an extremely strong (200+ mile/hour) jet stream out of the Gulf of Alaska, a conveyor belt of 3 or 4 very strong and wet s…

WXAmerica - October 15, 2006 "If you know anything about how to read numerical model output, you have probably realized that the longer term forecast for most of North America is more than a bit bizarre. It is unusual to get one intense blocking ridge at high latitudes in October. But if you buy into the line of thought provided by the most recent, there are TWO impressive blocks present: a thumb projection complex along the West Coast of the continent and a regressive lateral Rex signature in the vicinity of the Davis Strait and NU. Even if the 0z GGEM (a clear outlier with its presentation of no PNA-styled ridge) turns out to be correct, near-record cold will be p…

Who got the torrential downpour yesterday? Lots of peninsular Florida got soaked yesterday. Almost 4 inches fell here between about 3:30-8PM. quite a bit of lightning and some periods of wind. It was warm so it felt like a summer tropical system. It was a B driving home yesterday in rush hour. Lots of flooded streets and traffic lights out.

Every so often even somewhat trusty weather models greatly get it wrong.. A suggested forecast that is. This thread is dedicated to some of the more share-worthy you might come across.. Tonight's contender: Total accumulated precip. forecast (18z FV3- GFS run), per Tropical Tidbits.. Note the totals on the far right. 12- 18"+of rain for Phoenix?? Ditch the coat, for a boat? ..and still, S. Cal doesn't get much.. Gotta love software glitches

01/30/07 Freeze Damage
by Tag- 1 reply

Well, I thought that I had gotten out of this unscathed, but apperantly not. My two king palms are showing around 35 - 40 % leaf damage. This is very surprising to me. They survived 26 last year with frost and similar damage. We only got down to 30.2 last night, there was visible frost on the ground, but I did not notice any on these two palms. There was definitely frost on a C. Ochlandra, Pigmy Date, and Foxtail, but there is no noticaeable damage on any of those. I know that they'll pull through and look fine in a few months because they grow like weeds, but I thought they would be undamaged after last year. I am worried about the damage getting worse too, there …

Dropped to 31F here at Leu Gardens and is back to 34 now at 7:15. The cable connecting our weather station to my computer failed yesterday so I can't tell how long it was at 31F until I hook the new one up. Tender foliage on the drive in looked mostly alright, a few bananas burnt but not all the way wilted. The bananas and heliconias in my yard weren't black and wilted and the coconut still looked green.

10b in the Desert
by ahosey01- 5 replies

Looking at the USDA map, it looks like there are some areas of 10b in the desert southwest. None of them look to be near any population centers, though, no matter how small. However, it's difficult to really decipher on the USDA map. Are there any small towns in the desert southwest that are in zone 10b, or just up in the hills where nobody lives?

10B zones in SoCal gardens
by Mark_NoVA- 18 replies
- 2.3k views
I've read a lot of comments on the board about the cold-hardiness requirements for palms in Southern California--sounds like the only frost-free areas are rare microclimates, and that typical winters, even in most of the San Diego area, see low temperatures below 30F. Does that sound accurate? Recently, though, I noticed that a fair amount of SoCal-ians list their gardens as a 10B climate. Given the above, that doesn't make sense--10B corresponds to 35-40F. The minimum temperature requirements of most palms, except those in Lipstick Palm range should be fine for 10B. If the above generalization is accurate, though, these SoCal gardens should be considered 10A or ev…
