I heard that the Montebello section of east LA had a small EF-1 tornado touchdown yesterday and caused damage to several buildings injuring one. Supposedly California records an average of 11 tornadoes a year and LA county sees less than one per year. The one yesterday was the strongest one to hit the metro LA area since 1983. I had never heard of one sighted in California before today but it's likely due to the weakness and minimal damage that they usually cause. Makes me wonder how palms would hold up since the vast majority of tornadoes occur in non-palmy areas. I didn't hear any reports of Washingtonia casualties.

Eastern Pacific Hurricane season 2021, A record early start
by Silas_Sancona- 0 replies

While still a few days shy of the "official " start of this years Hurricane season ( May 15th ) Appears things are already getting going southwest of Mexico. While a minimal Tropical Storm, Andres marks the earliest a named system has formed here. Second earliest would be back in 2017 on May 10th. https://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/topstories/tropical-storm-andres-earliest-tropical-storm-on-record-develops-in-the-eastern-pacific/ar-BB1gx34n Doesn't appear this system will hang around very long, and won't bring any moisture north of the border, except maybe across parts of southern Texas later on. Hopefully a sign of things to come and some drought relief later.…

Summer ripening
by Bilbo- 0 replies

This has been one of the best summers for late autumn ripening that I can remember - lotsa sun and warmth = excellent ripening and build up of natural plant "anti-freeze" for winter to come. Hope this proves true for others in UK and indeed everyone in this hemisphere. Regardez Juan

Shallow geothermal energy: a possible solution for anyone growing a palm tree in colder climates.
by macheck- 0 replies

In 2017 I started to experimentally grow a Rhododendron simsii outdoors. The technique that I will describe should also be useful in palm trees growing in colder climates. According to the American Rhododendron Society the R. simsii is hardy down to -9 C (15 F). I currently live just outside the city of Szczecin, Poland (officially USDA zone 7B). Over the last few years however the winters have gotten more mild and usually the temperature doesn't drop below -11 C (12 F). At the beginning I planted my rhododendron in its' pot in the ground and placed over it a plastic garden cloche. This was done in order to limit the formation of frost on the rhododendron as well as shelt…

Cold air drainage and Abq's "Box"
by SailorBold- 0 replies
With cooler Fall-like weather moving in and the growing season coming to a close I thought I would share a video form the Weather Channel explaining a local weather phenomenon known as the "Albuquerque Box". This phenomenon is related to cold air drainage in a valley setting during colder mornings which in turn effect air currents/movements. The local balloon fiesta wrapped up last weekend with near perfect weather for balloon launches... this video gives a visual representation of how colder and warmer air moves around during the colder times of the year. At any rate... What is interesting to me is how low a cold air pocket is to the ground..and how the balloons hel…

I see now that I can look up on line what I think is the the most accurate weather man locally..... The crazy cool John Coleman guy. From my earlier years racing where I watched the weather for weekends ALOT, I found him to be by far the most accurate. Anyhoo, heres a link. http://www.kusi.com/weather You can read his thoughts on the global warming issue if you look about.

I saw some highlights of the first round of The British Open golf championship yesterday. The weather looked brutal for July. Highs were only in the 50's F. There was extreme wind, and of course some English rain. The event was at Royal Berkdale in Merseyside, England. Nineteen players with scores over 80. There were some big names in that group also. I love when the elements demonstrate our insignificance and challange our best atheletes during sports. Or even when weather influences other big events. I guess where I'm going with this is for people to think of some events where weather significantly affected the outcome of something important. A couple exam…

I looked on Weather Underground on my computer and looked at the current temperatures map, and where it is warmer right now along the coast basically shows where the climate changes from "Mid Atlantic" to truly Southern.

La Nina Gone Wild
by happ- 0 replies

http://www2.ucar.edu/currents/atmospheric-river-runs-wild Attached is an article by University Corporation of Atmosphere Research in Boulder, Colorado. This winter, thus far, has not behaved in a way most La Nina's do [i.e. record cold in Florida, record rainfall in southern California\ Southwest U.S.]. Does it mean that the rest of winter [the solstice just started 2 days ago ] will be as "climatic" or will things settle down in a more traditional pattern of mild & dry weather from California to Florida? No one knows!

Just looked at the forecast synoptics for this week and on Thursday the north island of NZ looks like it will cop a very strong low that will just walk down the east coast of NZ and then as the system breaks up the rain will walk north from the south right up the west coast, but of course with less wind strength. It looks like a cyclone but that far south it likely will be a cold core storm system. Take care PT members in NZ over the next few days.

The wet stuff...
by Silas_Sancona- 0 replies

Well, after a very dry and much warmer than average start to 18, looks as if the West/ Southwest is in for a bit of a pattern change. How long or brief? We'll see but anything is welcomed, esp throughout S. CA and AZ. While there has been a bit of hymn and haw back east regarding the weather pattern sparing the west much of the brutal cold everyone else has been enduring, keep in mind it isn't all rosy glasses in t-shirts here either. While the recent stretch in the 70s and 80s (in a few spots) this time of year is obviously great for people and plants, there's an unfavorable side to the coin. Keep in mind that alot of our water going forward comes from winter…
