A great deal has been written about the advent of the new Supercanes resulting presumably from Global Warming and other forces linked to mankind's destructive tendencies. It is interesting to note that the most prolifically destructive Hurricane ever in the Western Hemisphere was experienced from October 10-18,1780.Few details regarding wind speed, tidal surge or other specifics were recorded but it's effects speak for themselves. The first landmass effected was Barbados, where the entire Island was defoliated and all dwellings were knocked down. The fury of the Storm was such that the survivors did not feel the shocks of an earthquake that accompanied the storm. It was sai…

3 Turbines in Katakolo...
by Kostas- 0 replies

I always thought Western Peloponesse is more like Florida climate-wise than California, with which other Europeans try to parallel their climates. Short freezes, frost with above 0C temperatures, lots of ground water, high humidity, good growing weather up till the last day before a freeze and thus lots of damage afterwards, and of course, tornados and turbines! 3 were reported within 15 days in January: http://www.metar.gr/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2568:2015-01-21-15-36-16&catid=37:kentrikiselida http://www.patrasevents.gr/article/149329-ileia-neos-idrostrovilos-sto-katakolo-video You may remember 3 years back two passed by a property of…

Palm growth in the fall/winter
by Ben F.- 1 follower

Hi all, I was curious about palm growth in the fall/winter. I'm in Southern California, zone 10a/b, it doesn't get much colder than upper 30's in the late fall/winter, typically not warmer than lower 70's during the day. I was curious about how palm trees grow during this season, specifically Queen palms. From what I read, they are still growing, but once the soil gets colder, not as much? I've noticed more palms around this area, including mine, seem to be doing the nutrient pulling from lower fronds (more yellowing), while still growing new fronds. Is there something about this time of year that makes palms use more of their own fronds, rather than nutrients/fertil…

North America Monsoon 2023: The unknown, & Stranger Things... Pt #1

It's that time of year again when the Southwestern U.S and N.W. Mexico enters the best season here.. The heat, towering walls of dust ..Lightning filled evenings, and humid, Hawaii-esque mornings.. That time of year when somewhat boring dry and thirsty landscapes are magically brought to life and can resemble places far wetter than one would assume.. Unlike prior years, i'm breaking this year's Monsoon thread into 2 parts: ....The here and now, and some personal thoughts on what may lie further out on the horizon.. Some interesting insight on what plants can tell us about weather patterns at certain times of the year as well.. Starting things off... …

Peculiarities of the Brownsville Climate
by ahosey01- 0 replies

Since moving here about a year ago, I have really paid close attention to the way that things here are climactically, and I have found things interesting. First - this may be one of Earth's wildest climates in terms of extreme temperature swings when the cold fronts make their way down off the plains. It is the only place that I have been able to find where even the hardier natives are frozen to the ground with some regularity (every 50-100 years). Presumably this could also be true in central FL but I haven't found any conclusive proof that it has happened. Would love to hear from some people who have been there for decades. This includes Lucaena pulvirulenta an…

Storm Season is here!
by Daryl- 0 replies

Well, first round of storms here in quite a while. We do get storms all year round, but Nov/Dec is the period of highest activity, with daily afternoon storms and sometimes three or four a day. We certainly need a few good storms as it has been very dry here, and despite a decent week of rain about a month ago, we have not had a drop since.... The storms here can be quite severe with torrential rain, very frequent CG lightning and high winds, along with hail, so we always hope for the 'milder' storms that just bring rain and thunder... Looks like this approaching storm is just rain and a few rumbles...perfect! Here's an example of h…

The Wild Enigma of Wickenburg Weather
by ahosey01- 0 replies

I had some questions about what temps would look like here in Wickenburg after moving in June. My house is at the bottom of the Hassayampa River valley in the center of town - about the lowest point you can go without actually being in the river. It's also on a slope, so the backyard is 10+ feet lower than the front yard, further away from the house and without any tree canopy. Been measuring temps since moving in from front yard to back yard, and also morning to mid-afternoon. What I have found - at least in my spot - is striking. 40+ degree temperature variations are the norm, and 50+ swings are not uncommon especially in fall. In the summer I saw a particular…

New coconut with root rap
by Yunder Wækraus- 0 replies

A month ago I purchased a young coconut that had been grown in a grocery bag. It had terrible root wrap, and I had to sever its thicker roots, which had fused with the bag. It looked yellow and sick, but it’s putting out a new frond now. Do you think it’s going to grow out of the root-wrap stage? (I’m also including pics of my other palms, which came with the house.)

" ON SUNDAY...THE TAIL END OF A PACIFIC WEATHER SYSTEM NOW LOOKS AS IF IT`LL STILL BE JUST STRONG ENOUGH TO BRING A CHANCE OF SOME RAIN TO ABOUT THE NORTHERN THIRD OF THE DISTRICT. THEN IN THE MONDAY TO MONDAY NIGHT TIME FRAME...A MUCH STRONGER STORM SYSTEM IS PROJECTED TO SPREAD WIND AND RAIN ACROSS THE DISTRICT WITH COOL AND UNSETTLED WEATHER CONTINUING ON TUESDAY...AND SNOW LEVELS POTENTIALLY LOWERING DOWN TO THE 2500-3000 FT RANGE. ALSO...GIVEN THE MODEL PROJECTED STRENGTH OF THIS SYSTEM AND ASSOCIATED COLD AIR ALOFT...ALONG WITH LATE MARCH DIURNAL HEATING...WILL NEED TO CAREFULLY CONSIDER POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT CONVECTIVE ACTIVITY AS WE GET CLO…

Tropical Storm Force Winds!
by Paul The Palm Doctor!- 0 replies

An interesting weather change is in store for all Florida Regions. A very strong & far to the south Jet Stream has caused a very strong pressure gradient to set up over the central & lower Florida Peninsular areas. Tropical storm force winds of from 45-57 MPH have been recorded at my weather station in SW Broward County (Miramar-Pembroke Pines-Weston-Southwest Ranches-Davie.) The device also recorded a 60 MPH gust at 3:07 PM today. After the cold front passes sometime this early evening, slightly cooler (but drier) air will filter in. The temperatures will drop a notch of two (from today's) 92 F. in SW Broward County, Fla. The real chill down is t…

A rainy day in Daytona Beach- video
by Bill H2DB- 0 replies

There's several more days of rain expected . I've had about 5.6" here since last Friday , including one burst of 3.2" in a little over one hour . That caused some localized flooding here in Holly Hill . During that one , some water got into the garage , which unfortunately sits below the elevation of the house and driveway . You may need to right click the video , to make it run . Rainy day in Holly Hill... by Bill H, on Flickr

So, So-Callians how much are you getting? I'm in the Dark Tower and it's coming down hard, since early morning. Forecasters call it light rain. Bring on the heavy. (Hope it's over for the PSSC meeting. Rain or no rain, I'm going!)

Here's some videos that I made on Sunday morning . About 30 minutes before High Tide . The first one is on the mainland side of the ICW , about 480' east of my house . The rest are directly on the beach . There is a lot of flooding of streets , particularly along the west side of the Halifax River , aka ICW . It is a tidal estuary , open to the sea and the NE winds back the water up , so that the tides can't get back out , as normally . I have received about 6" of rain so far .
