As Yesterday was the 120th anniversary of the 1899 arctic outbreak I thought I would link to this 1988 abstract detailing the event. It also touches on the arctic outbreaks of Jan 1982 and Jan 1985 at the end of the paper. Obviously it was written a year to early to include the outbreak of 1989 that I remember witnessing the aftermath of that February while visiting the Stuart area during my winter break in high school. Current Winds - San Diego

My dad found this link to a graphic of the current winds, updated every 10 minutes. We're up in Alpine right now and it's pretty darn windy with and Easterly Santa Ana wind. If you know the topography of San Diego it's interesting to link the terrain with the wind. Like you can see how the East wind comes down the San Pasqual valley in Escondido and hits the mountain by Lake Hodges and really roars. Or how the flat, low desert of Imperial Valley suddenly raises up to the mountains and it really ramps up. Current Winds Link

Drought Broken, Darwin

The 1st of October is the official start of the Wet Season in the Top End of the Northern Territory. And as if it was scripted, we had a beautiful little downpour about 9.00am this morning. This was the first rain in the Leanyer ( my suburb ) gauge since 28th April, ie; 5 full calendar months without rain. Without checking official records it would be right up there with the longest droughts recorded. We have an extreme Wet/Dry monsoonal climate that is hard on man, beast and palms. Last 'wet' I recorded 100" until the end of April and not a drop since until this mornings welcome rain. I shudder to think what my next water bill is gunna read.....I have been pouring it on t…

Its been a really dry summer here and we finally are getting one day of rain, all day that is... this will be the third time it has rain this whole summer the other two time was only for a few hours but today its 90% and that should really help make the garden grow now. Cordylines, Melianthus, Abutilons and cool growing palms will start to take off.

How does this Winter
by bubba- 0 replies

The Palm Beach Post reports that if Winter ended today, the average temperature recorded at PBIA would be 64.3F. This is based upon the fact that most forecasters define Winter as Dec.-Feb.Accordingly, that would make it the 11th coldest Winter since record keeping began in 1888.This assumes an average remainder for Feb.I do not know about you but I am ready for this to be over. The story goes on to say that this is the coldest Winter since 1981.The average for Dec/2009 was 70.8F; the average for Jan/2010 was 60.6F and the the average through Feb.15, 2010 was 61.5F.The coldest ever Dec.-Feb. period occurred in 1957/58 with a three month average of 61.6F.Accordingly, if…

Coachella Valley / Deep Canyon Winter Lows

If you follow this link and click the historic data for “Boyd Center,” which is a research station up the hill south of Palm Desert, you will see that - far from the heat island - winter lows average 51 degrees Fahrenheit! https://deepcanyon.ucnrs.org/weather-data/ This is the location of the research station: This is situated in topography similar to La Quinta, although the valley in La Quinta is a little wider and lower and is not at the mouth of a canyon. However, it may help explain the presence and survival of the La Quinta coconut palm. I don’t think there’s another place in the U.S. with the same combination of average summer highs around 105,…

Luckily nothing to worry about yet, though my Baobab (Adansonia grandidieri) is about to go dormant by this point. Good idea to take it inside before it rains and gets a fungal attack... Otherwise here's to hoping we get another mild winter!

Not possible of course but thats no hoax - honest guys- unless someone is real cute they dont easily make a fool outa your friend Jon. Explanation: apparently they were collected as pets on ship in the Antarctic and released in Alaska later. Plausible I suppose and published in a respectable newspaper. Aint nature wonderful at adapting? "Holy caped crusader there will be millions of Penguins advancing along 5th Avenue any time!" Not sure if this is new to all, but it is to me. I found out the iPhone weather app has a nice averages chart. Apparently, it uses average data from 1970. “Monthly averages reflect daily highs and lows since 1970. For example, the January monthly average uses January 1 through January 31 for every year since 1970.“ Here is mine for Santa Ana, CA. I know averages aren’t always our best gauge for what to plant, but it is interesting and helps get the imagination going.

The 8a microclimate of the Calidiora Peninsula
by Muslim Gardener- 0 replies

A few months ago I left Kurdistan and moved to Virginia in the United States where I have been experimenting with hardy palm trees and exotics. Let me tell you about the 8a microclimate of my new home. The Calidiora Peninsula is a large piece of land in Virginia which is separated from the rest of the Virginia Peninsula by Skiffes Creek and Felgates Creek in the Northern area of the Calidiora Peninsula. The USDA hardiness zone of the Calidiora Peninsula is USDA zones 7b and 8a. The closer to Fort Monroe you get, the warmer it is. The closer to Skiffes Creek you get, the more cold the Winter can be. This year, it got only down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit on a late Decemb…

Howdyall, especially our contingent of newbies in the San Fern Valley. Driving into DT LA to the Dark Tower and the trees were shakin' their thangs' (or having them shook) by the wind from the Valley. This is what we're warning you about. Put your tender stuff behind a windbreak AND GIVE THEM A DRINK OF WATER EVEN IF THEY DON'T APPEAR TO NEED IT. Especially the tropicals from the jungles, understory dypsis, etc. Let us know how it goes, and happy holidays! dave

Winter in the subtropics of South America
by Sabal_Louisiana- 0 replies
Of the the three major humid subtropical regions of the World: The southeastern United States East Asia (central and southern China, southern Japan, etc) The Pampas of South America (northern Argentina, far southern Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay) The last one listed is the least affected by severe cold waves and is also favored biologically since it is contiguous with the Neotropics. Even so, I am mildly surprised that the subtropical latitudes of South America are not immune to moderately low temperatures, even brief freezes. For instance, at the end of June 2021, a cold snap brought temperatures down to 0.8C at Asuncion and -1 at the airpor…

New Toy Sunlight and Temp Logger

I was looking for a way to get accurate light measurements for fun and for just nerding out on palms . I found these pretty cool data loggers from Onset/HOBO They have some expensive serious stuff but they have these little pendant loggers that you can just bluetooth to your phone as well. The little device can log once a minute for 37 days or so. It exports to .csv .xcel or .png. I got a light and temp pendant MX2202. $80 isn’t cheap but not too terrible either. This data is for a B. condopanna living under a banana plant. I’m logging data for a C. nucele this week to see how much light its taking.
