San Fernando Vallians!

Howdyall, especially our contingent of newbies in the San Fern Valley. Driving into DT LA to the Dark Tower and the trees were shakin' their thangs' (or having them shook) by the wind from the Valley. This is what we're warning you about. Put your tender stuff behind a windbreak AND GIVE THEM A DRINK OF WATER EVEN IF THEY DON'T APPEAR TO NEED IT. Especially the tropicals from the jungles, understory dypsis, etc. Let us know how it goes, and happy holidays! dave

Winter in the subtropics of South America
by Sabal_Louisiana- 0 replies
Of the the three major humid subtropical regions of the World: The southeastern United States East Asia (central and southern China, southern Japan, etc) The Pampas of South America (northern Argentina, far southern Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay) The last one listed is the least affected by severe cold waves and is also favored biologically since it is contiguous with the Neotropics. Even so, I am mildly surprised that the subtropical latitudes of South America are not immune to moderately low temperatures, even brief freezes. For instance, at the end of June 2021, a cold snap brought temperatures down to 0.8C at Asuncion and -1 at the airpor…

New Toy Sunlight and Temp Logger
by D. Morrowii- 0 replies

I was looking for a way to get accurate light measurements for fun and for just nerding out on palms . I found these pretty cool data loggers from Onset/HOBO They have some expensive serious stuff but they have these little pendant loggers that you can just bluetooth to your phone as well. The little device can log once a minute for 37 days or so. It exports to .csv .xcel or .png. I got a light and temp pendant MX2202. $80 isn’t cheap but not too terrible either. This data is for a B. condopanna living under a banana plant. I’m logging data for a C. nucele this week to see how much light its taking. by bubba- 0 replies

DewPoint’s of note around the Continental United States ranged from 82°F in Miami Dade near Kendall with most of Florida in the mid to lower 70s. Lower Louisiana averaged approximately 67°F. The lower Texas coast at Laguna vista had the highest at 75°F but had dropped to 46°F by Rio Grande City. The Texas coast through Houston averaged lower 70s° Fahrenheit to San Antonio, which averaged lower 60°F to El Paso at 7°F. Moving westward, Tucson was 15°F, Phoenix was 28°F, Yuma was 41°F, La Quinta was 33°F, Santa Monica/LA was 49°F and San Diego was 51°F. Honolulu was 63°F and Key West was 77°F. Brief sweep globally, I saw 81°F at a Brazilian location in th…

Bright lights in the Sky
by Silas_Sancona- 0 replies

As someone who has studied weather about as long as i have all things green and leafy, i have always been fascinated by the countless ways the sky can offer up something interesting at any moment. From the look of frost on the ground at sunrise on a cold winter morning, to how menacing the sky can become while storm casing, and avoiding an approaching tornado and softball- sized Hail, there is always something worth looking up for. When it comes to some of the more"optical" things that appear above our heads, some, like Haloes and Rainbows are pretty common, others are rare enough that you'd have to be in the right place at the right time to observe. Some are so uncom…

Plant Wax signaling Wetter Monsoon seasons for the Southwest ..and Southern California... ahead??
by Silas_Sancona- 0 replies

We may be a month into N.H. Winter ( I use the meteorological definition ) but, as always, always looking ahead to the best of seasons here in the Southwest. Sometime ago, i'd mentioned how the UofAZ was involved in undertaking a large study to get a better grasp on what the North American Monsoon cycle might do in a warming world, and see what clues warmer episodes in the region's climate past might offer. checking in for winter weather- related info from a couple local climatologists, i stumbled upon an article related to recent findings that study is tarting to shed light on, which follow thoughts i myself have had, and go against some other wisdom on what driv…

Any recommendations for thermostatically controlled 110v switches? Last year I left my heating lights on a day/night timer, but that wastes a lot of electricity. Looking for something preferably programmable, or that turns on at 38F or so. Should be outdoor rated.

The freeze cycle
by chris78- 0 replies

I have always like studing climate since I was in grade school.... And I like reading the topic "Looking Back at the Great US Freezes" What I learned is that freezes in subtropical climates come in cycles... I was esps interested in freeze that occured in Florida as a kid and it effect on tropicals.... I was unsure why these cycle occured but that they did and mostly in groups of 3 or 4 years..... As I got more into climate I always saw these cycles come with decrease in solar intensity or activity..... For me the sun and oceans are what really controls the climate on earth (and also the hole in the ozone..... which I feel is control by solor activity and the solo…

Snowing in Oz for Xmas
by Cycadcenter- 0 replies

FROM SMH TODAY YOU will not often see a summer snow report, but Thredbo issued one yesterday after that most unseasonal Australian sight: a white Christmas. In a day of wildly contrasting weather, four centimetres of snow fell on the NSW alpine town, Victoria was hit by hail, five centimetres of snow fell on the summit of Mount Wellington, behind Hobart, and high temperatures sent Queenslanders to the beach. As Sydney enjoyed a top temperature of 27 degrees - the near-average for December - Melburnians endured their coldest Christmas Day on record. Melbourne could muster only a maximum of 14.5 degrees and a minimum 8.5 degrees as snow, hail and thunderstorms s…

California Fires 2016
by WestCoastGal- 0 replies

I took a look at the wunderground map with the Fire button activated and was surprised to see all the fires ongoing in the State of California right now. We have been occasionally impacted by the Soberanes Fire's smoke here for a few days at a time (Big Sur State Park) since it started but fortunately have been spared much of the dense smoke. Heard that San Francisco could even smelled the smoke the other day. Looking at the latest CalFire/USFS maps I have to wonder if the whole park is going to burn. Found this blog a few weeks ago, bigsurkate, published by Kate Woods Novos with nice updates of general info, fire maps, personal stories and photos if you're interested: ht…

All, Prepare yourself for a week of sub-30's (with a potential low of 23) starting Friday. I am hoping that the Arctic dip is held off by what remains of a Pacific High that has been dissapating more slowly than predicted. Maybe we need some hot air from Sacramento to ward this off. Is the assembly in session?
