The Bahamas and Cuba
by bubba- 1 reply

Using the Wunderground product to check around some other locations. Obviously,it has been cool in Florida for this time of year. However, that coolness is not limited to just Florida. Prowling around with the Wundermap,I see many spots in the Bahamas are only in the high 60's and even Habana and much of Cuba is in the lower 70's during the afternoon. That is Cool stuff.I bet they are loving that!

I planted one in 94 and its nearly 7' tall. Roughly when will it flower? I appreciate that will depend on many factors. It is in a warm, sunny position. I have certainly seen a few in flower at 10' and once in Spain at only 8' or so. Any opinions or is that an impsosible question? Many thanks for your help guys. Regardez Juan

01/30/07 Freeze Damage
by Tag- 1 reply
- 1.1k views
Well, I thought that I had gotten out of this unscathed, but apperantly not. My two king palms are showing around 35 - 40 % leaf damage. This is very surprising to me. They survived 26 last year with frost and similar damage. We only got down to 30.2 last night, there was visible frost on the ground, but I did not notice any on these two palms. There was definitely frost on a C. Ochlandra, Pigmy Date, and Foxtail, but there is no noticaeable damage on any of those. I know that they'll pull through and look fine in a few months because they grow like weeds, but I thought they would be undamaged after last year. I am worried about the damage getting worse too, there …

San Diego area microclimates
by displaced_floridian- 1 reply
- 1.7k views
When looking up climate statistics, San Diego appears to have about the best climate for human comfort in the continental US. Jan. (coolest month) avg. 65/49, and Aug.(warmest month) 76/67. This seems almost ideal. But, these temps are only in a very small area of extreme coastal SD. Go inland just a few miles and you have a very different climate, with much higher highs and lower lows. Go North 20 miles and you also have lower lows and higher highs. Valleys and ridgetops also have a big impact. San Diego hasn't had a freeze since 1950, I think, but El Cajon, only about 15 mi. inland, freezes about every < 10 yrs with a January avg of 68/42 and August avg of 88/64. Som…

Today marks the end of the Solar Winter for the Southern Hemisphere. (I.e. the 3 months making up the 6 weeks either side of the shortest day...) Farewell. I noticed this at Hagley Park last week. Looks like spring has already sprung. (mind the repost).

Even with the recent cold outbreaks that have happened this season thus far, many areas of the Italian South still have yet to go below 50F, especially in areas of Sicily, Apulia, and Calabria. That means that all the mentioned areas in winter will (and are) going t…

It's all in the microclimate!

This Morning there is a light offshore breeze under a pretty strong inversion layer, the strongest I've seen this year. With crystal clear skies, even though it was in the mid 70's yesterday, this Morning, low lying locations in the Santa Cruz Coastal Mountains are as low as 24F at 300 feet to 55F at 1,000 feet. That's a massive difference in temperature!

Hurricane Kathleen CALIFORNIA 1976
by DoomsDave- 1 reply

I thought we didn't get 'canes here in Cali. Turns out I was wrong. There was a hurricane, Kathleen that reached the California and Arizona deserts in 1976. Didn't make the news that I can recall. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Kathleen_(1976) Anyone have memories? "Hurricane Kathleen was a tropical cyclone that caused destructive impacts in California. On September 7, 1976, a tropical depression formed; two days later it accelerated north towards the Baja California Peninsula. Kathleen brushed the Pacific coast of the peninsula as a hurricane on September 9 and made landfall as a fast-moving tropical storm the next day. With its cir…

La Nina Autumn 2020
by Tracy- 1 reply
La Nina patterns or cooler equatorial sea surface temps from the Central Pacific through to the Easter Tropical Pacific are occurring right now. These patterns often lead to dry and clear Autumn and Winter weather patterns here in Southern California where I live. The west coast just experienced a typical La Nina weather pattern last weekend with an inside slider storm coming down the coast with strong winds and leaving us now with cool dry nights and no marine layer. I hope that this isn't a sign of what is to come as we get deeper into Autumn and enter Winter. With clear skies, I bottomed out at 39 degrees last night, and even the weather station at Moonlight Beach …

Was lucky to see the "Ring of Fire" eclipse on Saturday morning.. It made beautiful and striking shadows that shimmered.. here are some pictures I took of the shadows.. coming off my Washingtonia Filiferas and Eucalyptus.. It was really fascinating..the weather was perfect for it..not a cloud in the sky. Im also attaching some of my weather station data which recorded a temperature drop! I figured Id share because from what I understand it won't happen here for another 300 years!

Off Season California Rain?
by Jubaea- 1 reply
In June we picked up over 3/4" of rain, which is really unusual for Santa Barbara for the normally dry month of June. This was a 1 day rain event that lasted most of the day. Now they are predicting tropical moisture and a cold front to pass by here this weekend/early next week and . I'm wondering what we may get here with this other unusual situation. I hope this materializes and that it is the precursor for the rainy season.

While reading through the local discussion I came across this and thought it was worth posting.... needles to say it was a long discussion and pay attention to the last sentence Problem 3: one of the very few times I hope a forecast busts...but it appears southeast Texas could see some significant ice problems early in the week as colder air filters in and overrunning moisture and disturbances prolong the precipitation into midweek. Threat appears to begin late Monday afternoon across northern portions of the County Warning Area as temperatures fall below freezing. Then as the remainder of the area falls below freezing Monday nt...threat expands to almost …
