UK Winter 2022/23 & rainy season

I figure I better do a thread for this coming winter so that I am not clogging up the 'what is your current yard temperature' thread again. So far it has been incredibly mild and almost summer-like at times. The rain and unsettled windier conditions have arrived though as the Atlantic oceanic influence has reestablished, taking over from the high pressure, subtropical ridging associated with the Azores high and Csb conditions in southern England. No sign of any cold potential though yet, assuming we even get any this coming winter. ECMWF has temps pushing 26-27C / 80F on Halloween in London and southeast England. A far cry from the weather that we used to experience …

Who's gettin' wet out there from TS Erin? It's pouring in Houston right now. Unfortunately, I have to get on an airplane for Austin in a few hours - it's socked in the whole way from here to there. Steve http://www.wunderground.com/radar....D=HGX19

Hurricane Nicholas

I know it formed right before landfall, and it only made it to Cat 1. What concerns me about this storm is the stall. Its going to stall probably tomorrow for at least a few days. The cone turns into a circle indicating a stall. This could be catastrophic. I guess we will find out, but after what we saw Harvey did, this is a definite concern.

Yesterday we had a few hours of sunshine here around noon, that means in the last 60 days I have had 1.5 days of sunshine, lol! Maybe in January this poor Kangaroo Paw will get some of its color back.

Honolulu cool October temps
by CLINODAVE- 1 reply

I posted this in another weather thread some weeks back: "Regarding Hawaii's recent temps, I checked nearby Wunderground stations and other NWS stations close to HNL where I think the main NWS station is located, and none of them showed lows below the 70sF on 24 Oct, when the airport was in the 50s supposedly. To add to the weirdness, Kaneohe observations (windward Oahu) went from 72 at 1:57 a.m. to 55 at 2:57 a.m. and back up to 75 at 3:57. Seems like a short time for such wild swings. I emailed NWS Honolulu to get their take. Last time I noticed a local temp anomaly and contacted them, they told me I was correct and their equip had malfunctioned." I emaile…

Tropical monsoon

Hi all! Just curious about this map I pulled from Wikipedia about tropical monsoon climates. I’m surprised (but maybe not totally surprised) to see parts of Florida shaded in on the map. I guess that explains why so many tropical palms do ok here until the big freezes 🤷♂️

Flirting with the Monsoon ..and some thoughts on summer 2018

On another hot Saturday evening, it is interesting to think that at the same time just last week, it was cloudy, humid and only 78F, compared to 95F out atm. That coming after a very good ( and unexpected) downpour earlier in the day, thanks in part to the squeeze play between the remnants of former Hurricane Bud, and an approaching upper level low moving N.E. from northern Baja. While most of the valley ( inc. Phoenix proper ) completely missed out, and thus continue the streak of rainless days since March ( 102+ and counting) we received a healthy .50-.75" which, in other places, might not seem like much.. but is practically un-heard of here, esp. in June. Rain duri…

Man Made Urban Heat Island

Tonight’s GFS forecast is a good illustration of the impact of urbanization. Take a look at forecast for DFW and Austin tonight. DFW airport is expecting 25F, rural areas in the low teens to single digits. Downtown Austin 25F as well, rural area low/mid teens. Whenever I get asked if climate change is real, I say ask yourself if you have ever laid on asphalt in the sun. Yes, it’s real for anyone in a very urbanized area like Dallas, Houston, Phoenix for example.

Supposedly a really amazingly cold front is coming to Southern California that might eclipse the horrendous freeze of two years ago. Not again! http://www.venturacountystar.com/news/2008...sets-sights-on/

If we don't get a substantial amount of rain in Feb-Mar, this coming summer is going to be a disaster. Temps on the other hand have been quite mild in San Diego. These are readings so far in January from a place just down the hill from me: http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstation...mp;yearend=2010

I didn't see any posts on the impacts of the volcano eruption and evacuation of Leilani Estates, and know that some folks who post are either in Leilani Estates or nearby. I was wondering how everyone is doing while hoping for the best? Volcanoes are sort of weather.

What the hail?
by Hillizard- 1 reply

Strong storm with lightning, thunder, rain and hail passed through interior NorCal this afternoon. Temperature dropped from low 60sF to mid 40sF in a few minutes. Doesn't look like it damaged most of my palms as the hailstones were small. Events like this happen almost every winter here, but once a season is enough!

SOUTH FLORIDA COLD - RECORDS
by Cristóbal- 1 reply

From weather underground: Public Information Statement Statement as of 12:00 PM EST on January 11, 2010 ... Historic cold weekend in South Florida... Temperatures over the weekend and early Monday morning plunged to levels not seen in 20 years over South Florida in the wake of the Arctic cold front which blasted through the region early Saturday morning. Temperatures remained at or below 50 degrees for more than 48 consecutive hours, finally rising above 50 during the late morning to midday hours Monday. Although no records are kept of consecutive number of hours at or below 50 degrees, it is likely that this streak is among the longest on record…
