http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/25/science/earth/25cold.html?_r=2&hp=&pagewanted=all Interesting article that points out how for the past 2 winters, Arctic air has descended well into the middle latitudes while the North Pole is experiencing record warmth. The AO [Arctic Oscillation] created unusual cold last winter and again this winter in the Southern U.S. and a summer that broke all-time records for coolness along the U.S. West Coast. Maybe this is something we will be dealing with year after year.

Cyclone Marcos, Darwin. Northern Territory.
by greysrigging- 2 replies

Back in March 2018 Darwin suffered a direct hit from a small ( Cat 2 ) Tropical Cyclone. Winds peaked at 140klm/h and really only blew for about 3 and half hours. Rain for the event at my place was less than 100mm. Whilst the City was spared from any major structural damage, the vegetation and trees copped a severe beating throughout the city and suburbs with literally thousands of mature trees felled and some suburbs were without power for nearly a week. My garden, which I have nurtured for nigh on 30 years was pretty well trashed.during the event and my bac kyard jungle is no longer a jungle....oh well, luckily plants grow fairly fast here in the Top End.... …

Weather Underground web site // software problem?
by Bill H2DB- 2 replies

Over the years , I've had a few problems with WU , but they usually get it straightened out eventually. Beginning a week or so ago , using my long used Bookmark , It did not go to the usual , start page . The bookmark has been there for several years . Now it goes to a maps selection page . Formerly it went to a page with a large USA composite map , with smaller maps underneath that , and we could select maps for different data maps that we wanted . Each one of these had a button to select various area of the World etc to focus on . I like(d) it . I have tried various other addresses at WU to try to find that original page , but can't…

"Cold Air Shots Are Not A Pattern Change Wednesday, January 03, 2007 I DON'T SEE A MAJOR PATTERN COMING YET, ONLY SHOTS OF COLD AIR, AND THAT REALLY IS NOT A PATTERN CHANGE IF IT WARMS UP AFTERWARDS.... Video will be on when I get in the office...Snow map is coming today for the storm in the Plains and Great Lakes... I know, I know, I know ... the talk out there amongst many meteorologists that a major pattern change is coming, but I just don't see it yet. Below are the graphs of the Arctic Oscillation (AO), North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the Pacific/North America Oscillation (PNA). Notice that the AO is forecasted to tank negative which is what people are…

SE Pre Winter Forecast.

I tend to keep on eye on what Joe Bastardi says when it comes to patterns. He has pretty organic forecasting in this regard IMO. He's calling for a pretty cold and wet(snowy ) winter for the those of us in the SE. If you planted some marginal stuff this year thinking it's gotta be better then last year's brutal winter might get ready to do some winter protection: These are all from Joe Bastardi's Twitter Page

Orange, CA climate
by enigma99- 2 replies

I was looking at weather underground here in the state of California and noticed something odd happening down in Villa Park currently at 11:15PM. Some areas are 78F and within walkable distance it's 18-20 degrees cooler. Obviously some compression heating up the air, but it's it combining with marine air and thus the temp drop?

Different microclimate questions

Alright, I know I've made a lot of posts about microclimates and what to plant there. But, since it is officially spring, I thought I'd do one more, and I don't think I have posted pictures of some of the microclimates I've talked about in the past, so here they are. So, in the picture of the Phoenix sylvestris, you can see more green grass underneath it as opposed to the surrounding area. No, that isn't green grass that was left over from the past summer, it actually emerged first. Could this be a little warmer microclimate or some other factor (obviously, I wouldn't plant anything there, I just want to know for fun)? Then, here is a few places I was thinking about plant…

Why Do Belem And Manaus Stay So Warm
by Rick Santos- 2 replies
- 1.4k views
What are the biggest reasons Manaus and Belem are always warm, compared to latitudes right at the Tropic of Cancer ? Is it the sun intensity? Or is it that they much too far away from the temperate latitudes that air might not be able blow down there? I imagine sun intensity has something to do with it also.

1985 in Florida
by Bill H2DB- 2 replies

Here are my records from 1985 . While the '83 freeze was quite bad ,this seems to me to have been more devastating in total effect . This set the ALL TIME low in Daytona Beach , and then matched the previous All time low on the following day . About 95% of the Queen palms in this area died , and about 75% of the Washingtonias as well. There were no green Citrus trees visible along US27 ( which passes down through the heart of the industry), until well south of Frostproof . Virtually every Australian Pine , Silk Oak ,Mangrove etc , regardless of size died.

The city of Mohe in the extreme north of China reached a record all-time low for the country (-63F) in modern times: https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2023/01/23/china-record-low-temperature-mohe/ Elsewhere in the region: Beijing dropped to -16.7C (1.9F) extraordinary but not as cold as that of 2021 when it reached -3F, the coldest since 1966. Shanghai fell to -6.6C (20F), preceded by light snow. The all time record low stands at -10C (14F). This less than a year since it set an absolute heat record of 41C in July 2022. Tokyo has dipped to -3C (27F), with a light snow shower, but may get even colder over the next couple of days. Temperatures…

Some of you guys will be well aware that following our last Bi in the DR a few members secided to go on to Cuba. I was tempted but did not go for two reasons 1) I dont like Fidel or his brother and 2) I dont like communism. Apologies moderator but that is about the only "political" thing I have ever said and it will be my last. Something positive now! Apart from all the many Royals all over Cuba the Jardin Botanico Nacional boasts of at least - wait for it - 162 species of palm. Now I know why those guys went: Temptation and good botanical intentions! The road to hell etc. Regardez Juan

A strong/persistent westerly flow in the upper atmosphere has delayed/sheared tropical activity [even at the equator Good news for hurricane weary & drought concerns. Excerpt from WxAmerica Also of interest is the Madden Julian Oscillation, which could have impacts on both extent of hot air in North America (unlikely) and tropical cyclone development (possible). In summer, the effects of the MJO are usually most pronounced in the southern hemisphere. But if a Kelvin wave is strong enough (and the signature most recently seen along the eastern coast of India and Sri Lanka certainly is), two shifts in the atmosphere can occur above the Equator. One is str…
