The rapidly disappearing ice 1 2 3

This is a great article worth a read for those interested in the empirical evidence of the disappearance of ice around the globe. http://www.npr.org/blogs/krulwich/2014/01/31/268356264/a-hunk-of-planet-dissolves-before-our-eyes Greenland and Antarctica are very remote, and were considered to be big ice boxes that responded not very fast to climate change. We never developed a mechanism to observe them until we had satellites and lasers. Now we see some surfaces lowering up to 50 meters per year." He repeated that number, to make sure Craig heard. "Fifty — five-zero — meters per year." That's a vertical drop of about 150 feet. In two years, that's 300 feet. Then 4…

So, its winter and some are nervous. Well, you should be, always. Here are some historical references. From: http://www.raingardens.com/psst/articles/artic03.htm by Richard Travis San Antonio, Texas A History of Severe Freezes in the Lower Rio Grande Valley -- Part III by Richard Travis San Antonio, Texas (This is the last in a 3-part series on a history of hard freezes in the Lower Valley. This part covers the two severe freezes in the 1980's, with a comparison of the severity of these two freezes versus previous freezes in the Valley.) After 1962, it would be 22 seasons until the next severe freeze. The seventies saw a number of cool to cold winters…

Potentially cold week for Florida next week 1 2 3

The European forecast model had been showing temperatures as low as 15F in Atlanta next Wednesday morning. It doesn't sound like a big deal but that type of cold that far south is pretty rare. The GFS model was showing less cold but it has started to agree with the European model. I'm not crying wolf here but keep an eye on the weather Floridians. Either way, at least part of next week will be well below normal.

We are so hosed tonight 1 2 3
by Justin- 93 replies

Unless something miraculous happens this afternoon, I can't fathom how we don't get a hard freeze tonight. As I write this, it's 40 degrees outside, during lunchtime. We had sleet an hour ago. Now, to make matters worse, it is clearing, and we're not supposed to have any cloud cover tonight to hold in all of the "warmth." Fingers crossed.

Low Humidity 1 2 3

Summer is here in South Florida. The Gulf Stream is about 90 degrees. Our low temperatures are angling towards the low 80's.The most difficult aspect ,however, is the relative humidity. When my wife and family travel West, one of the most enjoyable features is the lack of humidity. 110 degrees F feels like 85 degrees F here. My question is : Do you realize how nice it is when you live year round in that environment? How does it feel when you come to Florida? Is there anything bad you can say about the lack of humidity?

Tropical Cyclone Dorian 1 2 3
by palmsOrl- 89 replies

Okay, so it appears that Tropical Storm Dorian will pose a significant threat to peninsular Florida this weekend, Labor Day Weekend. Currently, the storm is forecast to make landfall on the coast of East Central Florida. This is, of course, subject to change, but track forecasts have improved dramatically in recent years. What is more uncertain is the strength of Dorian. While previously believed that the tropical cyclone would pass directly over Hispaniola, the computer model consensus now has Dorian passing between Hispaniola and Puerto Rico or directly over Puerto Rico. This would cause far less disruption to the storm's circulation and would leave the storm m…

2018/19 Winter Low Temps 1 2 3

About this time every year someone starts a thread about Winter Lows in the Northern Hemisphere. Such a thread is somehow therapeutic for PTers anxious about how cold may affect their palms - at least we know we aren't alone. So, I'll kick off this year's discussion. This morning was the lowest temp since last March: 48.4F Predicted: 46F Current temp: 56.3F at 10:30 a.m. Tomorrow's predicted low: 43F Then a warming trend until the next cold front. I am making no attempts to move/protect palms at this time. After sunup, temps rise quickly.

Technically its our second cold front of this season. The last one was very mild that never impacted South Florida. This one will have high 40's F in Southern Miami Dade County. Still mild but we are overdue for another cold winter. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

There is alot of discussion on this Board about Zone 11. The definition of Zone 11 seems nebulous at best when it discusses "an average minimum temperature of 40 degrees F."What does that mean? The last time I remember it dropping below 40 degrees F. in this area was 1989.(Palm Beach)At anyrate, the National Arbor Day Foundation completed an extensive revision of this map ,which is available on the Wikipedia Hardiness Zone article. This article also lists the Hardiness Zones for numerous American cities. In California,San Diego,Los Angeles and San Francisco are identified as Zone 10. The only American cities designated Zone 11 are Miami,Florida and Honolulu,Hawaii. As it rel…

What have you heard about this winter's forecast for the Gulf Coast from Texas to Florida? 1 2 3

I am curious, what have you heard about the long term forecast for this winter for the Gulf Coast from Texas to Florida? I have heard conflicting things. A couple of sources I have heard from or read said that this winter will by warmer and drier than normal, and a couple of sources said it will be chilly and wet. So, what have you heard? John
