looks like there is a chance Florida could get hit hard. check National Hurricane center for details (that mo-fo is taking a super low track with a dramatic swing to the north - if it moves just alittle to the west of the spaghetti models - worse case it could transverse south to north the entire state....jast sayin

CURRENT COOLDOWN 1 2 3 4

The cold snap coming is expected to last thru the weekend, with frost and freezes expected, though not record cold. It appears that all forecasts are targeting inland, rural areas as calm, cold conditions exist - but I am seeing another cold shot next week. Anyone see longer range? My data only goes out 7 days. It appears like Thurs and Sat mornings will feature freezes for inland Tampa Bay/Orlando with watches up for inland South Florida. Then, next week more cold? Watcha thinking?

February Freeze? 1 2 3

The long range for Feb is below normal in the eastern 2/3 except for the far upper midwest/rockies where above normal is expected. Precip is to be above normal. Here in Tampa Bay it is CHILLY yet again, today. In the 50's, overcast (el nino overcast) and breezy, so it is COLD~ The rains of the past week have largely missed me, thankfully, and about an inch fell total while some areas to my north got 3"+. In freeze recovery, heavy rains are not a good idea. While no arctic banger is to be expected, consistenly chilly air is. I hope some warm air gets by in between. I've been here well over 20 years and I have never seen back to back winters like these! Freeze damage is eve…

UK Worst Freeze Since 2010 1 2 3

The Polar vortex is sending freezing air towards the UK creating a cold setup quite possibly worse than the 2010 freeze. All the air from the arctic is being funneled down onto us. We are under clear skies all night tonight the temperature in London is slowly dropping whilst the countryside and the outskirts are plummeting in temperature. This freeze has practically appeared out of nowhere after a long hot summer and warm autumn/fall. It was supposed to be just above freezing however the last week the forecast got worse and worse until we ended up with this, an arctic air mass and clear skies at night. This is the worst possible scenario whilst snow might also be bad the…

Southern hemisphere summer 1 2 3
by Tyrone- 116 replies

I thought I'd get the ball rolling. Here in the west of Oz, the start of summer has been a cool one with no need for any air conditioning yet. Nights have been dry and blowy from the east and due to the lack of moisture cool to cold. But that's soon to change. At the moment it's blowing a gale from the east and the mins are in the mid teens celcius. Today we're going for 32C, but when the heat trough forms and moves inland the humidity should rise for a short time and the wind will blow from the west and we'll be getting mins in the high teens to low twenties. Next week we don't really drop below 30C during the day. We're still in our first phase of summer. Th…

April Weather Thread 1 2 3

...hemispheres that is... Anyway, what is going on where you are? California? Australia? England? South Africa? New Zealand? Anyone? A summertime pattern of daytime heat and humidty followed by evening thunderstorms is in place right now. Last day of March and first 2 days of April have seen widespread showers and thunderstorms across the southern 2/3 of FL. Actually kinda' strange to have this pattern so early. Could the weather be forshadowing a nasty hurricane season ??? Palms are loving this spring so far and I like this weather as long as it lasts but I am sure we will have an extended dry spell coming before the real summer rain pattern sets in.

Countdown to disaster part 2 1 2 3

Well, time for another fitfull night. NWS has offered up this little tidbit to make us all feel better: MINIMUM TEMPERATURES TONIGHT ARE EXPECTED TO FALL TO THE LOW TO MID 20S WITH A FEW UPPER TEENS POSSIBLE AT THE COLDER LOCATIONS. TEMPERATURES AT THE COLDER LOCATIONS COULD FALL BELOW 32 DEGREES SOON AFTER SUNSET WITH THE LOWEST TEMPERATURES OCCURRING AROUND SUNRISE. DURATIONS OF TEMPERATURES OF 32 DEGREES OR LOWER COULD BE AS MUCH AS 12 TO 13 HOURS. Adding to all this BS, my fireplace insert(which I heat my house with) is belching smoke into the house everytime I open the door. Must be some kind of inversion going on...

After a HUGE soaking May 2nd, nothing measurable since but sunny skies. We missed the rains from the last cold front (.02 doesnt count) so its been 3 weeks and counting since a decent rainfall. The hose it getting a workout! Feels like California with highs in the 80's lows near 60F and RH below 50%. No rain forecast for another week YET temps near 90F......

Future USDA Map 1 2 3

Unfortunately my computer crashed last year and it looks like I have lost a few things. I had a USDA map of 2012 and a (NOAA I think) simulation of what the map was predicted to look like in 2035 or 2040. I scoured the internet tonight trying to find it but I came up empty. Does anyone happen to have this map or a link to where it is found? Thanks

Hello, I am curious about the big freezes that have hit traditionally subtropical areas like central and south Florida, south Texas and southern and coastal California. For example, how bad was the freeze in '89 here in Florida? Did the native Royals see damage in thier habitat in south Florida? Thanks, Bill

December 2009 Weather Thread 1 2 3

Starting off the month cold and wet in Louisiana. Drizzled all day yesterday, woke up to rain and 40 degrees. Will top out today around 55. Its been a wet fall and early winter here. Reminds me all too much of those cold wet winters that were common back when I grew up. You could wear all the layers you wanted and an over coat, but the moisture just went right through them the minute you walked out the door. Used to make my teeth chatter. The last two warm decades have hardly given us the opportunity to wear winter clothes here. But I just got this gut feel this one is gonna be different. I sure want to be wrong.

Polar Vortex on the Way? 1 2 3

Saw this article in the news this morning. Haven't read it yet but am already shivering. If there is any good in this news, it's that the vortex won't arrive until mid-February. Maybe the effects won't be as severe by then. polar-vortex-may-be-on-the-horizon-scientists-warn Note: I'm reading article now. Polar vortex to start end of Dec. and inflict "one of the harshest winters in years." Yikes! I remember the last one not too many years back.

Record Cold 1 2 3

What a winter it has been so far. We have had some of the coldest weather in recorded history. We are experiencing yet another cold snap here, with more to come. The strange thing is that our local airport has recorded both the warmest July day ever and the coldest minimum as well. This is a location about 1 kilometre from the ocean. Lucky for me so far my temps have not been as cold as the airport. Here are some stats for the month up to yesterday. Last night the airport minimum temp was 0.0C!!! regards, Daryl.

Hi Everybody Does anyone have any good suggestions for planting cool looking fast growing trees that would provide canopy in a few years to avoid frost and radiational freezes. I'm trying to build a micro climate for my Vista property. ALL SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED below are some trees that I've done a bit of research on myself some tree species I have researched: Tipu trees (fast grower) Australian bottle tree (fast grower) Ice cream bean tree (fast grower) Chinese elm tree (fast grower) Rainbow eucalyptus tree (fast grower) schizolobium parahyba (fast grower) fast growing palms I've researched: Brahea clara roystonea bor…

January Weather Thread 1 2 3

I thought a January weather thread was already started, but I can't find it. Of course the main thing on my mind is the expected hard freeze on the night of Jan 2. I have protected my most exposed landscape bed in the front of the house, but it seems that most of my palms are just too big for me to realistically protect unless I want to erect several "palmscrapers". The rest is just going to have to ride it out. My forcast lows for Jan 2 at the time of this post (zip 33570): NOAA/NWS: 28F Accuweather: 29F TWC: 29F Wunderground: 35F ???
