Average First Frost 1 2

Based on data from 1981-2010, the first frost in my area on average comes around November 6th. Here we are approaching December within the next couple of weeks with no temps in the 30's anywhere in the forecast! Looks like first frost maybe the very tail end of November or early December. Forecast models are hinting at maybe a frost coming on December 5th, which is literally almost a whole month past the average date.

California November Weather Thread 1 2
by osideterry- 47 replies

November is a month where our all time record highs are well into the 90s and our lows have seen 29F (Oceanside Airport). We have more sunshine days in November than any other month of the year. At 11:45am my sensor is reading 88.2F, and it was 47F at 7 this morning. It's too hot to do yard work, and so dry you keep dehydrating which can lead to a nasty headache. Loving the heat though, and living with the lows.

El Niño is a periodic natural warming of ocean water in the tropical Pacific that impacts weather in the U.S. and around the world. The Cold Weather blues 1 2
by PalmGuyWC- 47 replies

It happens every year about this time. Around Nov 15th we get our first frost and it was a few days late this year, but now it's quite chilly. I was just outside for a garden walk and it's so chilley I'm back here at the computer. Just darn uncomfortable to work outside. The low last night was 32F and there was a white frost this morning. Worst, they are forcasting a low of 28 later in the week. I always panic when I see a forcast near 32 F degrees. I should get used to it because it happens every year here. I know at 28F the cannas will be burned to the ground, the bannas, etc, but the palms will still stand untouched. All of my tender palms in pots are under a…

UK Spring/Summer 2025 and wildfire season 1 2

The first half of March is done and it has been VERY dry here. I have registered 0.8mm / 0.03 inches of rain so far this month, but many places have been even drier. Some places as little as 0.1mm / 0.003 inches. Temperatures have been a bit below average with some rather chilly nights due to all the clear skies, hence all the sunny dry weather this month... On the Environmental Agency network, there are multiple stations in Devon and Somerset that have only recorded 0.1mm / 0.003 inches of rain this month so far. Presumably that is the driest first half of a March on record for these places, since this area isn't even generally renowned as being a 'dry'…

With winter coming to a close, I thought it would be interesting to know how cold it got in some of our member's yards. That's a hard question for those on hilly properties so maybe give us an average of the lowest temps. recorded on your probes. My lowest this winter was 34F.

Tampa, St. Petersburg, FL weather archives 1 2

Hello, I am hoping someone can guide me to a source of free weather archives specifically for the Tampa / St. Petersburg, Florida areas. I have the monthly average temperatures and record highs and lows from weather.com, but I was hoping for an archive of daily temperatures dating back to about 1948 (which I think would be the earliest for St. Pete). I have data like this for Galveston, and it is really great to have. Thanks in advance for your help. -Brian

July in California 1 2

Somebody has to start the Calif. July thread, so hear it is. June in N. Calif. was well below normal in temps. (at least 10 degrees or more) until the very end, then last weekend we had a sizzler with highs around 106 to 109. Temps. have returned to "normal" with nightly lows in the high 50's to low 60's and daytime highs in the upper 80's. I expect there will be more heat waves ahead as July through Sept are our warmest months. Dick

Here we go again in Florida !!! 1 2

The cold weather is starting a whole month earlier than last year. This morning I woke up to 41 degrees in Miami beach. Next week I heard there is supposed to be an even colder blast. The coconut palms took a beating here last winter. They just started to look good again. I fear that many palms that were weakened by the cold during the winter of 2010 will not survive if we have a repeat performance.Someone told me that 50% of the Coconuts in SW Florida were killed last winter. It breaks my heart.

florida Florida Freeze and Weather Station Data 1 2
by kinzyjr- 1 follower

NOAA makes weather records from the Florida stations available to download for free. Out of the 1,700+ stations, 358 contain at least some temperature data. If one were to download all of these records, import them into a database, and use some crafty SQL queries to generate sheets for each of the impact freezes it would provide a really good side-by-side resource to compare the microclimates in each region of Florida. That is exactly what has been done with the 0000_202011040720_F_SQL_v2.xlsx spreadsheet attached to this post. Each tab in the spreadsheet contains records for one of our unfortunate cold events. The records come sorted first by the TAG column, whi…

PNW - Summer Weather 2022 1 2

Well I feel like its officially time to start the summer topic. I've had a few days just below 100F so far, and some pretty decent weather going forward. Even though we had a late start I'm seeing some good growth, and the heat lovers have really started moving. Currently sitting at 90F and the forecast is looking pretty toasty.

26 degrees this am in Punta Gorda,FL 1 2

Temps hit 26 early this morning. It is currently 29 degrees. It is not yet winter. Given the extreme cold of the past two years, I think my zone needs to be changed from 9 to a lower number- maybe 8a. So much for Kentiopsis oliviformis and Satakentias. What happened to the global warming theory? Any ideas?

Similarities between S Fl and Hawaii 1 2
by displaced_floridian- 1 follower

I'm a native Floridian (hence my name) and have always been a weather buff. When I look at weather in HI and S Fl I notice a lot of similarities. Temps are similar with highs in the upper 70s to upper 80s. Lows are generally in the 60s and 70s--except for the FL cold snaps . Also, the wind in both places seems to be from the E to NE a good part of the time. In Hawaii they are called Trade winds. Are not these perisitent E-NE winds in S Florida also Tradewinds--even though they are more frequently interrupted by cold fronts in Winter?

Why so cold? 1 2
by gsytch- 45 replies

Perhaps someone can shed some light. I've been here long enough to see quick cold snaps, but this year has me confused. There is little snow cover up north, and the land is relatively warm. The Gulf is warmish and yet tonight I am not getting any influence. The AO is not negative, yet this looks as cold as anything we had last year. I knew this arctic air was sitting in Alaska weeks ago, and I always worry when it gets that cold there...but how did this dip occur? It looked cold last week, but not this! I never went above 47F this afternoon and the wind was awful. Anyone chime in? How did this happen? Thanks!
