USDA Hardiness zone is not a good way to have a abstract view on minimum temperatures 1 2

USDA hardiness zone is calculated by the average annual minimum. I know that temperature is not the only factor that kills palms in the winter.... but lets take extract only the temperature factor. I consider is a bad way to calculate someones minimum climatic temperature. let see the following example year 1: -4C year 2: 3C year 3: 5C year 4: 4C year 5: 4C so this would mean that the average annual minimum would be 2.4C or hardiness zone 10b If someone plants a 10b palm would be fine for a couple of years until that one cold year will strike back (in our example -4C which would correspond to hardiness zone 8b) and the palm will fry! As many palm lovers have se…

An Early Rain Season for California? 1 2
by happ- 52 replies
- 5.1k views
The dying remnants of Hurricane Hilary began moving into California yesterday w/ scattered showers over Los Angeles though most areas stayed dry or just very light rainfall [uCLA picked up 0.14]. Possible thunderstorms thru Sunday. But the real news is the approach of two wet storm systems that will move ashore next week that could produce widespread showers especially in northern California. Our first taste of fall! Hopefully this rain season will be as bountiful as last year.

Signs of Autumn 1 2
by happ- 52 replies

After unrelenting heat, California will experience a significant cool down for a few days. And next week an even cooler airmass should invade the Southwest from the Gulf of Alaska. None of this means anything in October except maybe some nights in the 50's If it were winter, these polar fronts could cause damaging frost.

Texas Cold 1 2

Much of south Texas had its first freeze this morning. Deep south Texas remained above freezing and maybe about 20 mile from the coast on up to Houston. Houston stayed above freezing while the western and northern suburbs were near freezing. I had 36 in SE Houston this morning with frost on the roof. Also there seems to have been a a cold spot in deep south central Louisiana around Morgan city with the lows in the upper 20s. Ed in Houston

NOAA proved it.Using Dec./2009 thru Feb/2010, the following locations in South Florida checked in as follows: Miami(1895)/67.21F/-2.8/34th coldest Ft Lauderdale(1912)/66.47F./-1.9F./15th coldest West Palm Beach(1888)/64.1F./-3.2F./10th coldest Naples(1942)/63.08F/--2.2F./6th coldest Miami Beach(1927)/65.17F/-5.6F./2nd coldest Moore Haven(1918)/60.38F/-3.3F./8th coldest South Florida may be most adversely effected in the State simply because so much tropical stuff grows here.It has taken a lick and my bet is we are all ready to wrap this one up and move on.

The furthest eastern point in the state of Florida is located at Palm Beach Shores, Florida (26.7/80.0356) while Palm Beach, Florida (26.7/80.0364) is nearby. Presently, the Gulfstream/Florida Current is approximately 5-10 miles of from PB and likely closer to 5 miles based upon Miami- So. Fl. NWS Marine Zone forecast. The postulate is that land closer to the Gulfstream/Florida Current experiences substantially higher winter minimum temperatures. A relatively new WeatherStation has been located in PB near the old Blossom property. It is KFLPALMB357 (hereinafter “PB Station”) and is located on the intracoastal side rather than the ocean side. A winter climate comparis…

World Weather in May 1 2
by amazondk- 51 replies

It seems there is not much interest in the weather in May around the globe. At least not being expressed in a monthly weather thread. Here in Northern Brazil the rains continue, the rivers are at record level. And, the damage is increasing as houses and cropland go under water. dk

Accuweather is wacked. 1 2
by Palmy- 51 replies
- 3.6k views
I check forecasts all the time on several different websites. But Meterologists at Accuweather are screwed up in the head, at least I hope. Accuweather has this forcasting system, where they reach out 15 days, which seems a little crazy if you as me. They seem accurate for the first 5 days, and sometimes the next five days. But between 10 days and 15 days, they are seriously wrong. They say that we are suppose to have snow and rain all the way out. It says that we will have temps in the mid to low 40's for highs and temps near 30 or lower for the lows. With snow and rain. They have to have some issues. Are the forcast models doing everything at this website? This cant…

More El Nino news 1 2
by John Case- 50 replies

I suggest that we all post our readings on El Nino here so we can get the best feel for the predictions that are coming faster (and furiouser?) as we begin weather that precedes the CA winter rainy season. I, for one, am unconvinced that there are a guarantee that there will be a bevy of gullywashers to save the state and cure the drought, but am hopeful that we will have more rain than what is considered normal. https://baynature.org/articles/today-in-el-nino-advice-dont-worry-about-the-blob/

Howdyall: I note that last night we were all yakking about how cold it was going to get, as I felt the temps at Ken Johnson's place here south of Miami fall and fall and fall. But, no evident cold damage, though more cold weather is expected for this evening/morning. But . . . Tampa, Orlando, JAX, Tallahassee, YIKE, it got cold there. So, how'd you all fare? Sounds like you were getting prepared . . . . Our joint crying towel is out and ready. dave

Winter 23/24 in UK & Europe with an early freeze! 1 2
by UK_Palms- 50 replies
- 2.2k views
After the crappy winter last year, it seems we are going to be starting this winter with below average temperatures as well. Far from ideal. Thankfully it won’t be too extreme as it is quite early on, limiting the extent of cold, but it is still quite a significant cold wave either way. And this appears to be effecting almost the entire continent too. This is coming down from Scandinavia and the Siberian arctic. Any cold will be heavily moderated / watered down by the seas around the British Isles, before it arrives on these shores. Here are the ECMWF and GFS runs. They are very similar looking now… both rather cold and wintry. I don’t …

S. FL freeze !!??!? 1 2
by surgeon83- 49 replies
- 3.7k views
As I have mentioned before, I am hoping to move to FL next spring, but the question is where (and it partly depends on where I get interviewed). Anyway, althought my first choice has been Tampa (or perhaps commute from St. Pete), I am again considering Miami but I started looking into real estate in outlying towns to save money and get out of the ghetto. Tamarac, FL seems like a pretty clean place from the pictures I've seen BUT.... Weather.com says it got down to 21 there in 2/1995- and froze two other nights (at LEAST that were record-breakers) in that same month!!! Then in 2/1996 it froze three more nights that were record-breakers (low ->23). Pic…

Anyone know when the new USDA cold hardiness zone map will come out? I've seen a few articles about them making a new one a while ago, but haven't heard anything else on the matter. Anyone want to guess at what the changes will be? How far north would 11 go on Florida, or 10?

Accumulating Snow 1 2

I know that it has snowed in Florida before, supposedly all the way down to Miami. What is the greatest accumulation you have ever seen in your area (Areas that you are trying to get palms to grow that is) including FL, TX, CA, Other states, Australia, South Africa, Other nations??? I remember seeing some pics on here of pretty decent snow on palms in Brownsville, TX. Sorry to sound stupid if it does not even snow in South Africa or Australia...
