INCREDIBLY wet August, Bone dry Sept 1 2
by gsytch- 63 replies

After over 21" of rain in August, where nary a day went by without a downpour or deluge, Sept has been bone dry! Except for a few showers, nothing - nana - nada - no rainfall to speak of. If the ground under a tree is not wet, it doesnt count! Logged .10" that is 1/10 of an inch despite daily 90+ heat and mostly clear skies. Humidity has been moderate, but that also is drying. The palms are growing better now that it is drier. Everything is. I can see Bromeliads saying "thank you" to drier roots. Unfortunately, it is getting too dry because the non-likeitdrystuff (like that?) is not happy anymore!I am starting to see weeds wilt some now. Who'da thunk it a month ago? Oh w…

United States Severe Weather 1 2

I got bored and started thinking, what if i create a thread specific to severe weather events? I thought about this partly because of the event that has occurred across portions of Texas and Oklahoma today, this activity is spreading over Arkansas as i type this. If you do not know, the Storm Prediction Center has 5 severe weather risk categories. Marginal (1/5) - 5% severe threat Slight (2/5) - 15% severe threat Enhanced (3/5) - 30% severe threat Moderate (4/5) - 45% severe threat High (5/5) - 60% severe threat So what do the percentages mean? Well, say you are under a Slight Risk, this means there is a 15% chance of seeing severe weather within a 25 …

Early Start to the Rainy Season? 1 2
by kinzyjr- 62 replies

There was a significant downpour here yesterday, and weather.com reports 0.37 inches of rain. Some of my potted plants were drenched and it was raining when I got home again today. At least we won't have to deal with as bad a drought as we had last year at this time.

A New Cold Front Sweeps Through 1 2
by _Keith- 61 replies

Another quickie front will bring ours lows to 38 tonight in So. Louisiana. This is colder than normal for us, but not severe. These early cold snaps start the harden off process for us, so I don't mind them at all. It is back to the 80s again in a few days, but I was out eating some Citrus off the tree and all I can say is brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Long and Lat 1 2
by wendisplantation- 61 replies
- 4.1k views
Hello all! I have a question re long and lat. Is it reasonable to expect that if I have a friend that is the same basic distance from prime meridian and equator, but opposite (me in the Northern hem and they in the southern) , that we could grow similar things, altitude being similar as well? I realize there is a lot more to it than just that, but I am curious if one could use long and lat to judge whether or not to TRY a particular species. There are so many plams that I want to try, but I have to pick and choose wisely because my makeshift greenhouse is fills up fast when 'winter' is coming.... Thanks ???

January 2010 - Possible Arctic Outbreak 1 2

Hi all. I'm an avid weather watcher, I have been for many years, and this is a topic I feel deserves a new thread. There are not many times when I see an event depicted on the computer models that have me truly concerned about my garden. We see these horrific scenarios show-up all the time, only to drop off a few model runs later. It's not easy to get my feathers ruffled. To put things into perspective, since we moved to Houston in 2005 the first time I got really concerned was January of last year. And for good reason - I had a low of 19 and stayed below freezing for almost three days straight. Onto my point: the models are showing a potentially devastating cold…

Wal, Daryl, Clayton and all the other Queenslander's, just wondering how you faired in the cold snap. Just read that it only got up to 11 yesterday, coldest in 90 years with some pretty strong winds. We must have been about the same up in Childers as Bundy also only got up to 12. Bruce

This is one for the aussies. With all the cold weather threads flying around I thought it would be nice to discuss Oz weather somewhere. Of course others from other areas are welcome to join in. We've had some crazy weather this year so far, so let us know how you're going? Over here in the wild west it's been amazingly humid from about mid January. It's rare to see a day even in the high twenties. This morning I woke to a 23C min with a 22.2C dewpoint or 94% relative humidity. The sun is up and there's a humid haze everywhere. It's going to be an incredibly sticky 38C today. Best regards Tyrone

Early January Freeze. 1 2

I got up a little earlier this morning and looked at Wunderground, this is what I saw. http://www.wunderground.com/wundermap/?lat=27.04283905&lon=-82.35276031&zoom=8&pin=Venice%2c%20FL I did not know how to save the page, but at 445am, it was 60F in Venice, and the Suncoast from Bradenton to Sanibel Island were all sitting between 57-62F. Oddly enough it was around 50F in Tampa, 48F in Naples, upper 30s to low 40s everywhere inland and south of Orlando, and mostly low 50s from West Palm to Miami. Even the northern Keys were colder than the Southwest coast here. I thought it was a misread temperature, so I went outside, and even with 30mph winds, I was no…

Where does it start looking tropical for you? 1 2
by philinsydney- 56 replies
- 7.2k views
We are lucky on the east coast because we have tropical-looking vegetation at least as far as 35S. the Illawarra district south of Sydney has fertile soils and a high rainfall, meaning there are large figs, bangalow palms and fan palms, flame trees and stinging trees growing wild. But when I am travelling north the landscape doesn't really resemble the tropics until I reach Grafton and the Clarence valley. Here all of a sudden there are sugarcane plantations on the river flats overlooked by timber houses on stilts, and some enormous Moreton Bay figs in the paddocks. There is nothing quite like this south of Coffs Harbour. Where do the pseudo-tropics start for you?
