Snowing in Oz for Xmas
by Cycadcenter- 0 replies
FROM SMH TODAY YOU will not often see a summer snow report, but Thredbo issued one yesterday after that most unseasonal Australian sight: a white Christmas. In a day of wildly contrasting weather, four centimetres of snow fell on the NSW alpine town, Victoria was hit by hail, five centimetres of snow fell on the summit of Mount Wellington, behind Hobart, and high temperatures sent Queenslanders to the beach. As Sydney enjoyed a top temperature of 27 degrees - the near-average for December - Melburnians endured their coldest Christmas Day on record. Melbourne could muster only a maximum of 14.5 degrees and a minimum 8.5 degrees as snow, hail and thunderstorms s…

This could get worse than expected...it's 8 PM Tue night, and already 31f in my lower field. If this holds up, I'll be below freezing for 11-12 hours...It looks like I'm gonna be the CRDB poster child this year. In this field I have, in ascending order(lowest/coldest first) Yucca Rostrata(they should be ok) Cham Hum Cerifera, Jubaea, Butia x Jubaea, Sabal Uresana, Dyp Decipiens, Parajubaea Torallyi Torallyi, Ravanea Xerophila, and at the top, Rav Glauca and Sabal Mauritiaformis. Over 2,000 plants at risk...yikes...help me Mr. Wizard !!!!

San Fernando Vallians!

Howdyall, especially our contingent of newbies in the San Fern Valley. Driving into DT LA to the Dark Tower and the trees were shakin' their thangs' (or having them shook) by the wind from the Valley. This is what we're warning you about. Put your tender stuff behind a windbreak AND GIVE THEM A DRINK OF WATER EVEN IF THEY DON'T APPEAR TO NEED IT. Especially the tropicals from the jungles, understory dypsis, etc. Let us know how it goes, and happy holidays! dave

Accuweather is wacked. 1 2
by Palmy- 51 replies
- 3.3k views
I check forecasts all the time on several different websites. But Meterologists at Accuweather are screwed up in the head, at least I hope. Accuweather has this forcasting system, where they reach out 15 days, which seems a little crazy if you as me. They seem accurate for the first 5 days, and sometimes the next five days. But between 10 days and 15 days, they are seriously wrong. They say that we are suppose to have snow and rain all the way out. It says that we will have temps in the mid to low 40's for highs and temps near 30 or lower for the lows. With snow and rain. They have to have some issues. Are the forcast models doing everything at this website? This cant…

FREEZE DAMAGE (early indications)
by ghar41- 2 replies
I realize it is early, but I have seen the dark splotches and curled frond edges before... I don't think I lost any but most of my A. c. "Illawarra's" will likely need to replace a lot of their crowns after this last weather event. It appears there is enough damage to the leaves that they will look very untidy in the spring. Also, small dark spots on Wodeytia but if that is the extent of the damage I will be thrilled. Some of others with dark spotting include P. rupicola, R. rivularis and Caryota urens. All Parajubeas (TvT, Sunka and Cocoides) look untouched. C. gigas still without a spot on it. Bismarkia's are turning more purple, not sure what's going on t…

Being as how it's REALLY gonna be cold the next few nights here in SoCal, I got to wondering: what type /brand of thermometers and / or weather gauges / stations does everyone use? Also: Given that the wife is asking "so what do you want for Christmas"....I'm thinking of asking her to pick me up one of the wireless weather stations with the remote sensors...anyone got any suggestions? Brands, model #'s, any pics you have of yours in action and prices would be greatly appreciated!

Cold blast in N. Calif.
by PalmGuyWC- 37 replies

Hey Folks, The nightly lows will be in the 20's the next few nights. Upper twentys, the forcasters say but I don't believe them. It's only 43 F now and it's mid day. It was 31 here this morning and a white frost. To cover them, or not? I don't know. I think my Bismarkia will be cold tested in the next few days. I'm not covering. Damn, why didn't I move to Hawaii 30 years ago when I could have?? I HATE winter!!! Dick

Warm season, Southern Hemisphere
by Tyrone- 28 replies
- 1.8k views
I just thought I'd start a weather topic that is about the warm season in the Southern Hemisphere, but if your up in the North, feel free to take part too. We just had the warmest night so far of 23C after a day of 31C, but no thunderstorms mentioned actually came. They are predicting a humid 30C today, and at 8.30am it's already past 28C. I watered like mad last night, so things will start to get into overdrive in the garden with this. My little R oleracea is now about as tall as me and is pushing about 3cm of spear a day. Going at this rate it will have pushed 7 or 8 new leaves by the time winter arrives. This isn't bad weather for us this early in the season. La…

The Cold Weather blues 1 2
by PalmGuyWC- 47 replies

It happens every year about this time. Around Nov 15th we get our first frost and it was a few days late this year, but now it's quite chilly. I was just outside for a garden walk and it's so chilley I'm back here at the computer. Just darn uncomfortable to work outside. The low last night was 32F and there was a white frost this morning. Worst, they are forcasting a low of 28 later in the week. I always panic when I see a forcast near 32 F degrees. I should get used to it because it happens every year here. I know at 28F the cannas will be burned to the ground, the bannas, etc, but the palms will still stand untouched. All of my tender palms in pots are under a…

Plants in Garage - How Long?
by KatyTX- 11 replies
- 1.3k views
Here in s.central Texas we've had 2 weeks of off/on light freezes - the lowest night was 29F. For the last 4 nights, I've had some of my sensitive plants (bottle/spindle palms, vetchia merrilli, + a couple of cycads) in the garage. No time to construct a greenhouse this year... How bad is it to leave these 'in the dark' for 4-5 days? Thanks, Matt

TWISTER CAPITAL OF THE WORLD!
by Bilbo- 6 replies

Who would have believed it - its none other than the UK! The other day we had a bad one in North London and one along the coast from me in Southampton. Until I read the facts in a sensible newspaper I would have guessed the Carribean. The police have said that its a miracle no one was killed or seriously injured. Roofs have gone and entire house walls are down so you can see right into the rooms. The scientific explanation it seems is due to our latitude which means that arctic cold weather gets sucked down from the North and can collide with warm weather from Southern Europe. How curious that you can get both at the same time indeed a few years back we had a mini to…

After a warm October, this morning it was 2°C/36°F, but many places were predicting a freeze here, so I guess I should be happy with that. It is probably the end of the growing season for this year, although it will be interesting to see if my Musa sikkimensis stops straight away, as it has still been growing at a reasonable speed until now. We are forecast sub zero temperatures for the next two nights, so I would be surprised to see anymore growth, especially as the daytime temperatures are also supposed to be quite low. I mulched most of the outside plants yesterday, due to the forecast, so hopefully everything will cope OK, although it may come as a bit of a shock…

Accumulating Snow 1 2
by ruskinPalms- 49 replies

I know that it has snowed in Florida before, supposedly all the way down to Miami. What is the greatest accumulation you have ever seen in your area (Areas that you are trying to get palms to grow that is) including FL, TX, CA, Other states, Australia, South Africa, Other nations??? I remember seeing some pics on here of pretty decent snow on palms in Brownsville, TX. Sorry to sound stupid if it does not even snow in South Africa or Australia...
