Hello everyone, I have always been a fan of palm trees, bamboo and tropical plants. I was born and raised in Seattle where I started a palm nursery in my back yard, I had over 400 Chinese Windmill palms growing.....had to get rid of them when I moved. Now I live in Arizona, Mohave Valley along the Colorado River. Elevation is 500ft +/- and growing zone 9B/10A, we get sub-freezing temps, but not a hard/deep freeze and not for very long, usually just a few min-to hours just before and just after dawn. Soil conditions are a mix of clay and sand, very few rocks. Our water table is just 15 feet down or so and the well water has salt (about 1200ppm) along with calciu…

I heard that the Montebello section of east LA had a small EF-1 tornado touchdown yesterday and caused damage to several buildings injuring one. Supposedly California records an average of 11 tornadoes a year and LA county sees less than one per year. The one yesterday was the strongest one to hit the metro LA area since 1983. I had never heard of one sighted in California before today but it's likely due to the weakness and minimal damage that they usually cause. Makes me wonder how palms would hold up since the vast majority of tornadoes occur in non-palmy areas. I didn't hear any reports of Washingtonia casualties.

Well, a cold front is expected to dip down through here over the next couple of days, with it comes lower humidity and low overnight temps. Even high temperatures will take a slight ding with highs only in the mid 80's in spots early next week. Lows will be in the mid to upper 60's in spots across northern Florida for a couple nights. It will be our first real taste of "fall". Im almost glad, but i know that this is a sign that ill need to break out the sheets and lights in a few months. A few months ago I left Kurdistan and moved to Virginia in the United States where I have been experimenting with hardy palm trees and exotics. Let me tell you about the 8a microclimate of my new home. The Calidiora Peninsula is a large piece of land in Virginia which is separated from the rest of the Virginia Peninsula by Skiffes Creek and Felgates Creek in the Northern area of the Calidiora Peninsula. The USDA hardiness zone of the Calidiora Peninsula is USDA zones 7b and 8a. The closer to Fort Monroe you get, the warmer it is. The closer to Skiffes Creek you get, the more cold the Winter can be. Ever since the freeze at christmas i have been wondering about cold waves and penninsular florida, specifically the science behind the power of a cold wave like 1989 vs 2022. The media called 2022 the coldest since 1989, even equated the two (and up north where i grew up this one was colder), but in florida at least they were very different. The Polar vortex is sending freezing air towards the UK creating a cold setup quite possibly worse than the 2010 freeze. All the air from the arctic is being funneled down onto us. We are under clear skies all night tonight the temperature in London is slowly dropping whilst the countryside and the outskirts are plummeting in temperature. Where I am temps in the high 90s sometimes low hundreds are not uncommon but winters are mild (low 40s at most usually) and most of the time get decent rain for here. Spent the afternoon watering, wrapping and covering here in NE Fla. Expecting temps of 21 ‘ 28 degrees for 3 days this weekend. I provided extra frost wrap around spears, gathered fronds before covering, where possible ‘ and my husband (NOT a palm guy) helped me protect even the most cold hardy…wish my luck. Last year, the cold completely burned up MOST of my fronds - but they came back - Triangle, Bizmark, p.robellini, BOP white and orange, Royal. I think they came back because I concentrated on protecting the central spear and heart, where possible and my use of copper fungicide after the event, but I didn’t protect the fronds enough. This time I did both.

In 2017 I started to experimentally grow a Rhododendron simsii outdoors. The technique that I will describe should also be useful in palm trees growing in colder climates. According to the American Rhododendron Society the R. simsii is hardy down to -9 C (15 F). I currently live just outside the city of Szczecin, Poland (officially USDA zone 7B). Over the last few years however the winters have gotten more mild and usually the temperature doesn't drop below -11 C (12 F).
