ElHoagie was right

ElHoagie - we had disagreed over drought tolerance of St. Augustine grass. Unfortunately, I was only speaking from personal experience with the stuff in my yard. I've been doing a lot of reading on warm-season grass for our area - I ran across a field study done in (I think) TX. They studied drought effects on St. Aug grass varieties - the difference was quite large. 8 varieties tested, some failed miserably. Floratam was outstanding. Isn't this variety used a lot out West? My grass is just the common St. Aug, not one of the better varieties (certainly not Floratam). So you're right - the better varieties are drought-resistant. And I shouldn't have judged …

wind chill
by JBa3Fan- 2 replies

I have done a search on wind chills here and came up with a bunch of results. and nothing what I was wanting to know. This is a really bad picture of my back yard last month. I am looking north while taking this pic. I guess my question is what kind of wind effect will I come across in the (heat) of the (cold) battle come the January/ Feburary freezing months here in Central Virgina? I am a tick more on the 7a side of the 7a/7b zone boarder. There is a low sloping front porch on the north side of the house that isn't pictured here ... on the east side of the back porch are a row of ummm 12-15 ft toll hollies , just past that richicidy (sp) …

Rain in Wai'anae, Elevation 300' Way back in the valley say 1 or 2 miles and a 1000' higher there has been light rain off and on for months and the "rain forest" there looks good with a few streams still running as of last Wed. Winter in your neighborhood

An index devised for the estimation of energy demands for cooling and heating is referred to as Cooling and Heating degree days. The number of degrees that the mean temperature for the day falls below 65 degrees F.are heating degree days; the number of degrees that the mean temperature is above 65 degrees F. are cooling degree days. I selected some locations for the month of January (Winter) to compare neighborhoods. Those in the Southern Hemisphere can use July. Key West (h) 49 © 164 , Miami (h) 76 © 141, West Palm Beach(h) 92 © 99 ,Lakeland (h) 198 © 74. How do your neighborhoods compare to these numbers?

Commencement of Fall in Florida
by bubba- 14 replies

Morton Weisberg in his book "Florida Weather" states that Fall commences when a location has two back to back minimum temperatures below 60 degrees F.Weisberg did a 30 year study, from 1956-1986.He found with this criteria Miami had it's earliest Fall on Oct. 27 ,1957 and it's latest Fall on Jan.5,1986.In the Palm Beach area we recorded 54 degrees and 57 degrees F. on Oct.24,2006 and Oct.25,2006 respectively.Does an early Fall portend a cold winter?

WXAmerica - October 15, 2006 "If you know anything about how to read numerical model output, you have probably realized that the longer term forecast for most of North America is more than a bit bizarre. It is unusual to get one intense blocking ridge at high latitudes in October. But if you buy into the line of thought provided by the most recent, there are TWO impressive blocks present: a thumb projection complex along the West Coast of the continent and a regressive lateral Rex signature in the vicinity of the Davis Strait and NU. Even if the 0z GGEM (a clear outlier with its presentation of no PNA-styled ridge) turns out to be correct, near-record cold will be p…

Plant Heat Zone Map 1 2
by chris78- 41 replies
- 4.6k views
In 1997 the American Horticultural Society came out with the "AHS PLANT HEAT ZONE MAP".... It has 12 zones, and are based on the Average number of days per year that the temperature were 86F or above. It was developed because plants have heat requirements to grow, flower and fruit successfully. As we all know, zone 10 in Florida is a different animal than zone 10 in California. Many of the zone 10 palms that grow like weeds in Florida, struggle in zone 10 in California if they live at all. Lets face it, there are more zone 10 plants growing in zone 9 in Florida than than there are growing in zone 10 or 11 in California. The map places South Florida in zone 11 or 12.…

Cilmate in Australia
by Walter John- 6 replies
- 1.8k views
A few people ask me about our weather here in Australia. I found these points from our Bureau of Meterology quite good. With a smaller continental area separated from polar regions by the Southern Ocean, Australia escapes the harsh outbreaks of true polar air which invade northern hemisphere continents during winter. Northern hemisphere continents have a greater temperature contrast between summer and winter. The most notable feature of Australia's climate is its high year-to-year rainfall variability. This is influenced by the Southern Oscillation which is driven largely from the tropical Pacific Ocean and overlying atmosphere. The phenomenon known as El Niño is pa…

Definition of "tropical"? 1 2
by spockvr6- 55 replies
- 6.4k views
Regarding different geographic locales around the globe, one is often left to wonder "is that place "tropical" or not"? Is it purely by latitude (i.e. if one is between the Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn then the location is by default, regardless of climate, considered in the "tropics")? Or, does one take a less strict approach and look at climate data and use certain rules of thumb (such as if the difference between daily highs and lows is more than the difference between highs in summer and winter, then the location is "tropical")? How do you define tropical?

Any recommendations for thermostatically controlled 110v switches? Last year I left my heating lights on a day/night timer, but that wastes a lot of electricity. Looking for something preferably programmable, or that turns on at 38F or so. Should be outdoor rated.

Global Warming 1 2 3

I guess as palm enthusiasts those of us outside of the tropics cannot get tired of this topic. Yesterday in the local paper was a feature story on how California's wine growing regions are in perile, that they did a new computer model study and found that the warming of various microclimates in Northern California will decimate the wine country areas. Of course the wineries interviewed were optomistic, saying they'd alter their growing practices, but none denied the probable warming trend. They did agree that the wine growing regions will be moving Northward up the Pacific coastline. And as I've posted before, my microclimate has warmed by 10 degrees F in the last 5…

Our September has been almost ideal from the plants point of view. Quite a few days very windy, which is not ideal, but a reasonable amount of rain. Daytime temperatures have been average or just above, but night time temperatures have been consistently above or well above average, which is great for keeping the growing season going, as long as we don't have a rapid change. The considerable amount of cloud cover that has been keeping the night time temperatures up will have reduced light and hence growth rate (along with the effect of reduced temperatures), so hopefully the transition to dormancy will be fairly smooth. This month has been very similar to last October …

9A versus 9B
by ruskinPalms- 32 replies

Hi all, I think that I live a 9B area. I used to live in a 9A area in Tampa Palms/New Tampa area. Pretty much looks the same in 9B as in 9A. Queens, Dates, washingtonia, Butia etc. What grows in 9B that won't grow in 9A? It seems to me that if you can grow it in 9B then you can probably grow it in 9A and even 8B...Things don't start to seem too different to me until one is in a true 10A area. Maybe I am missing out on some wonderful 9B and up palms? I suppose that the issue is that palms for 9B must be just as frost and freeze hardy as palms that live in 9A/8B. Any thoughts?
