Global Warming 1 2 3

I guess as palm enthusiasts those of us outside of the tropics cannot get tired of this topic. Yesterday in the local paper was a feature story on how California's wine growing regions are in perile, that they did a new computer model study and found that the warming of various microclimates in Northern California will decimate the wine country areas. Of course the wineries interviewed were optomistic, saying they'd alter their growing practices, but none denied the probable warming trend. They did agree that the wine growing regions will be moving Northward up the Pacific coastline. And as I've posted before, my microclimate has warmed by 10 degrees F in the last 5…

Our September has been almost ideal from the plants point of view. Quite a few days very windy, which is not ideal, but a reasonable amount of rain. Daytime temperatures have been average or just above, but night time temperatures have been consistently above or well above average, which is great for keeping the growing season going, as long as we don't have a rapid change. The considerable amount of cloud cover that has been keeping the night time temperatures up will have reduced light and hence growth rate (along with the effect of reduced temperatures), so hopefully the transition to dormancy will be fairly smooth. This month has been very similar to last October …

9A versus 9B
by ruskinPalms- 32 replies

Hi all, I think that I live a 9B area. I used to live in a 9A area in Tampa Palms/New Tampa area. Pretty much looks the same in 9B as in 9A. Queens, Dates, washingtonia, Butia etc. What grows in 9B that won't grow in 9A? It seems to me that if you can grow it in 9B then you can probably grow it in 9A and even 8B...Things don't start to seem too different to me until one is in a true 10A area. Maybe I am missing out on some wonderful 9B and up palms? I suppose that the issue is that palms for 9B must be just as frost and freeze hardy as palms that live in 9A/8B. Any thoughts?

New USDA Map Soon? 1 2

Anyone know when the new USDA cold hardiness zone map will come out? I've seen a few articles about them making a new one a while ago, but haven't heard anything else on the matter. Anyone want to guess at what the changes will be? How far north would 11 go on Florida, or 10?

Microclimate/sub zone
by Walt- 21 replies

Up until 2003 the USDA rated my area (Lake Placid, Florida) zone 9a. While the USDA qualifies their rating(s), saying there are microclimates that can run warmer, thus raising one's zone, I feel they are in error to a large extent, as many of these warmer areas are just too large to be referred to as a microclimate, at least in the context of the county's size in area (and by definition of microclimate). For lack of a better term/word, I think some of these areas are actually sub climates, as they comprise, in some cases, many square miles of area. In any event, the photos below show some of the coconut palms growing here, which indicate a higher zone rating than z…

Having been commenting on how appauling our August has been, the statistics are now out. Temperature above average, contributing to the second warmest summer on record. Oddly enough, I thought last August was really nice and yet the average temperature was exactly the same as this year. I think there are two contributory factors, firstly this August was somewhat wetter than normal and our levels of sunshine were the second lowest since 1987. Secondly, we had our hottest ever July with abundant sunshine, so by comparison August with an average temperature 3.2°C/5.8°F lower, over 50mm more rain and over 48% less sunshine seemed worse than it in fact was. My statist…

Need To Find a Raingauge
by Jeff Searle- 4 replies

Now is our rainy season here in South Florida. And often, I think to myself that I would like to measure how much rain we get in my area for the entire year. I know we get more rain here at my place than on the coast. I am due west of Fort Lauderdale. But I can't find a nice rain gauge that will hold more than 5" at a time. Anyone have a sugestion on where I might find a nice one?

The Price We Pay
by Neofolis- 21 replies

On another thread it was mentioned that in the US a cold winter often follows a good summer. I noted that it is often the other way round here, i.e. the cold winter preceeds the hot summer. Having just had our hottest July ever, we now have the worst August I can remember, at least for many years, whether or not that is reflected statistically remains to be seen. This morning when I left work at 6:00am it was 6°C/43°F, a temperature that I would normally associate with mid-late October. I just wondered what experiences people recall of frustrating changeable weather, I'm thinking more long-term rather than daily changes. I realise the UK has a fairly stable clima…

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK
by happ- 20 replies
- 2.2k views
Larry Cosgrove - WxAmerica - Sunday, August 13, 2006 TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK I have had quite a few emails recently proclaiming "bust" in a "dud" tropical cyclone season. With only three named storms so far, and none of them hurricanes, this rush to judgment might seem understandable. However, the old adage that "there is a reason why NHC does not quit giving advisories until November 30" is a valuable consideration. After looking at computer forecasts, SST charts, and satellite images, I suspect that some of you storm enthusiasts are in for a real treat. And in a fairly short amount of time. First of all, upper level wind outlooks show nearly contiguous heat r…

Hottest July Ever
by happ- 30 replies
- 2.8k views
Interested in how hot July was nationwide and if any records were broken. July 2006 was the hottest July ever in Los Angeles. Suburban San Fernando valley recorded an all-time maximum of 119F/48.3C. I've been a "weather watcher" for National Weather Service for 26 years. JULY 2006 [elevation 910F/227M AveMax: 94.7 NormMax: 88/31C AveMin: 71.4 NormMin: 66/19C Hot and quite humid with isolated thunderstorms much of the month but nothing more than a trace on several days at my station. Ocean temps have been warmer than normal nearly all summer but periodically spike into "El Nino"-like readings of 80F+ increasing mugginess at night. Haven't noticed …

Nice Tornado pic
by MattyB- 2 replies

This was emailed to me so sorry if this is an old pic that's been floating around the email world. I just thought it was really spectacular! Here's the text that came with it: Awesome.... night time photo of Lightning and Tornado This is a spectacular "Night" picture of the Tornado that went thru portions of Sedalia, MO on March 10, 2006. If it hadn't been for the Lightning at the same time as the pic was shot, you would never have seen the massive tornado funnel already on the ground. When you hear a nighttime tornado warning for your area, take cover because most of the time you will never see it coming.

Flooding ?? Water tornado's ?
by Exotic Life- 16 replies

After a very heat July the first 4 day's of august are very wet for here. Some parts of the netherlands have got 150 mm/5.90 Inch of rain, and that in 4 day's. Normally there fell in the hole month august 60 mm/2.36 inch of rain, so this gonna be a very wet month. I recorded in my own garden so far 97 mm/ 3.81 inch of rain. Because the heat the ground is closed en hard, so the rain comes so much in a short period the rain can't directly go into the ground, you get little floodings on the streets gardens and houses. The picture's are from a part in the east of the netherlands. Also the last few days there are some water tornado's, i don't know how you called them. Be…
