Just curious.... I know that Sabals and Butias (capitata & eriospatha) are grown up there, but what else? Any crownshafted palms, or does it get too cold? Thoughts? There's a botanical garden there but I'm not sure of its name - something like Kanapaha ? - near Gainesville, right?

Hurricane Center director out

The Herald says he quit or was ousted. Not merely "temporarily reassigned." This possibly brings an end to calls for his ouster by some 20 of the 50 staff. What an unusual in-the-office storm for a fairly staid agency!

Today its been raining with a high of 12C in the garden, lots of rain! Lost my Pinanga caesia of 8 years, the first casualty. The last several weeks its been unusually wet and cold, bad mixture for many tropical palms. Expecting lots of black spotting this winter, can only hope for few deaths. Not a Cheerfull Mike

La Nina or not?

A strong/persistent westerly flow in the upper atmosphere has delayed/sheared tropical activity [even at the equator Good news for hurricane weary & drought concerns. Excerpt from WxAmerica Also of interest is the Madden Julian Oscillation, which could have impacts on both extent of hot air in North America (unlikely) and tropical cyclone development (possible). In summer, the effects of the MJO are usually most pronounced in the southern hemisphere. But if a Kelvin wave is strong enough (and the signature most recently seen along the eastern coast of India and Sri Lanka certainly is), two shifts in the atmosphere can occur above the Equator. One is str…

It is really raining this afternoon here at my house in The Acreage area of Palm Beach County. It rained yesterday as well. Glad I got fertilizer out. Everything should really start growing. I cold dance out in it. I hope the Kissimmee River Basin is getting some so Lake Okeechobee will get some more water in it.

Jan.2007 freeze in Arizona

A tremendous amount of information regarding the California freeze has been deciminated on this site. I am very interested about the effects of this freeze on Arizona and the numerous grower's personal experiences. I am particularly interested on the effects on the numerous Royal Poinciana's and Ficus specimens. Also, what were the duration and low temperatures experienced?

Typical summer evening in Florida

I love the weather here in florida in summer. Here are a few pictures of what can be expected any given summer evening: Outflow boundary approaches from the northeast generated by the rain cooled air of some big storms that were raging inland: Sometimes, these boundaries can fire off some new storms in thier wake. Darkening clouds approach from behind the boundary:

Not possible of course but thats no hoax - honest guys- unless someone is real cute they dont easily make a fool outa your friend Jon. Explanation: apparently they were collected as pets on ship in the Antarctic and released in Alaska later. Plausible I suppose and published in a respectable newspaper. Aint nature wonderful at adapting? "Holy caped crusader there will be millions of Penguins advancing along 5th Avenue any time!" Global Climate Change & Palm Selection
by Keith N Tampa (ex SoJax)- 4 replies

OK, I'm not wishing anything bad to happen to anyone, but IF I had the power to adjust my climate just a little, I'd put an end to those nights that drop just a smidgen below freezing. It seems that, except for the lows that occur about 2-10 nights per year, I could grow a Coconut palm in my yard (without protection). I just can't see how those 2-10 nights would have much of an impact on the Polar Bears (& I really want them to be around forever ). Of course my satisfaction would be short-lived because once I had that Coconut then I'd want the sligtly less cold tolerant Veitchias, then the much less cold tolerant Cyrtostachys & Piggies. Goodness, can a palm a…

Melbourne (population 3 million) the capital city of the state of Victoria had an average temp of 16C well above the long term average of 12C and the highest since records began 150+ years ago. A similar story in Adelaide (population 1 million) the capital city of South Australia the average minimum temp was 12C well above the long term average of 10C and the highest since records began . The average maximum was 2C above normal although not a record. These trends were repeated throughout the region.
