The Blizzard of 08'
by JakeK- 18 replies

We are currently in the middle of a snow storm that's has dropped our highest snowfall in several years in about 24hrs. I have at least 11" on my deck with another 3-4 inches still to fall. People in Cincinnati should be mowing their lawns now, not digging out of white death. Even the Bockfest parade was canceled.

Zone Changes
by BobbyinNY- 11 replies
I usually like to see a pattern before I say that I really think zones are changing, but for the past 3 years in a row, we've had some of the warmest winters on record.. Last year the temps didn't get below 8f (and only 2x) and this year so far they haven't gotten below 11f - and most of the nighttime lows have been in the high 20's - low 30's - which would technically put us in a zone 8. Today it's a balmy 59f, and all the flowers are poking out of the ground. I'm just wondering if other people across the country are noticing the same thing.

Comparing Climates
by osideterry- 39 replies
- 3.8k views
I've been on this forum just over a year now, and it's been an education in learning about what others here experience. It's interesting finding people on the other side of the world with a similar climate. Our Southern California climate seems to be mirrored most by New Zealand, Southern Australia, Greece and maybe Spain. I wish there were more Mediterranean folks posting to compare notes with. Anyone else find people a world away with a similar climate?

Celsius and Fahrenheit Conversion
by John in Andalucia- 3 replies

Having joined the IPS recently, I thought I'd offer everyone my rendering of a very useful Celsius and Fahrenheit converter! I didn't write the script myself of course, that was done by Dr. Gene Davis, who gave me permission to use it. Apparently, his company are part owners of several ranches in Mecca, CA, of which one is a date palm ranch. Small world then, that his script - which I know will be useful to many, should find its way to the IPS forum! (Oh, and you can visit my site to!) Looking forward to a lifetime of palmtalk! John Celsius and Fahrenheit converter: It's here!

What a strange year this is turning out to be...
by Jeff in St Pete- 10 replies
- 1.5k views
It started raining around 4 pm today and we are having some very hard rains right now. Any other time of the year, I would expect this, but not February. February is usually sunny, hot and dry. We have had thunderstorms or just plain rain every afternoon for the last 4 days. It's been great not watering my plants in the shadehouse, but this is very strange for this time of year. In fact some friends of mine were just here and they chartered a small plane to fly back to San Jose. The flight was cancelled because of bad weather and they had to spend another night here. That is almost unheard of this time of year.

Flooding in Queensland
by Walter John- 21 replies
- 2.3k views
Whilst we may be complaining about the cold or whatever , spare a thought for the residents and farmers of many Queensland towns and those of Northern New South Wales who have suffered major loss due to flood. How ironic, half the state of Queensland flooded the other half in drought, wow, Australia, she's tough. No wonder we like our footy, no helmets thank you. I wonder how some of our native palms went or will go with the iminent flooding of Rockhampton areas.

Heavy rains hit many parts of Hawaii
by Al in Kona- 30 replies

How are the rest of you Hawai`i guys doing from the heavy rains (thunderstorms) hitting our islands? How much have you recorded? For us in Kona the day started out very nice, then mid day I began to hear thunder rumbling and dark clouds appearing mauka (upslope). Thunder increased and by late afternoon we were having a deluge at times. Probably the heaviest rain I've seen here falling in such a short period of time. I recorded 83.5mm (2.5 inches) so far. The forecast says we can expect continued heavy showers at times thru tomorrow. Let's see how accurate they are on this one. I hope it clears out by Friday (Feb. 1) for the HIPS annual BBQ dinner and palm auction …

Holy Moly! Todays high was 64 degrees! It felt like april. March is usually or snowiest month, but it's unlikely that we will see temps dip below 5 degrees again this winter. Here are just a few shots taken from the backyard. The sun is out for the first time in weeks! Photo taken from back patio. The snow is finally melting from my backyard. Here in colorado winter is far from over, but things are finally starting to warm up!
