Although this is still a little over 2 weeks out. Looks like the latest models have put virtually all of California, and Northern Mexico, into a pretty significant freeze (especially this late in the winter). I wonder if this an outlier, or a serious concern on the horizon?

European winter 2016/2017 1 2
by Exotic Life- 72 replies

What will this winter bring in Europe this time? Please post what is happening over at your place this winter. The last few winters were really mild for us here in northern Europe, so hard to get even milder winters. Winter 2013/2014 was even frostfree for me, last two winters had some frosty moments but mostly around -1C for a few hours exept, beside a few nights which were colder. This november has been quite average and had some frost as well, last weekend I recorded -3 and -4 and also this weekend looks a bit frosty. Long term is evolving again to a mild episode with temperatures in the double figures, it is however impossible to beat the last year mediter…

Warming Up!

The lows and the highs are finally starting to rise in temperature as spring approaches! Today it was 81 degrees F and was sunny, a few of my (non palm) plants are starting to come up. Now the lowest lows are in the high 20s and low 30s. How is your weather?

Winter Slam

Well ... Old Man Winter has delivered a punch to my area. It's rare to see such an occurrence, but when it does happen you never quite know what the end result will be. I heard a cracking sound after mid-nite and thought a tree limb broke under the weight of heavy wet snow. Stepped on out and found a 60' Eucalyptus urnigera down. Lucky it landed right where I wanted it to. (3' concrete retaining wall for reference) The thaw is on and looks like my chainsaw is in for a workout when the weather picks up. How did others fair in the latest PNW blast?. Cheers, Barrie.

Jealous of Europe's Weather 1 2 3

Can you imagine what palm-growing conditions would be like in the American South if we had a tall range of east-west mountains (like the Alps) separating Texas through to the Carolinas from south-driving arctic blasts AND if the gulf stream warmed America's coast the way it now warms Wester Europe? Check out this map that shows where European cities are situated relative to American locations of the same latitude. They're growing palms and citrus in Spain, parts of France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, etc., but Jacksonville Florida, which is across from Africa, is too cold for commercial citrus production! 'Tis unfair. http://mapsontheweb.zoom-maps.com/post/125519562883/map-of-…

Possible Florida Freeze - December 1 2 3 4

It's that time of year again, crazy how time flies. My coastal city just finished removing Hurricane Matthew debris (vegetation & fences) from my area this week and now we are talking about old man winter. This is a week out so can't take it too seriously, but it's good to be prepared. Saturday morning, December 10th looks like our first shot at much colder weather. Especially for north Florida.

Freeze warning for CA 1 2 3 4
by enigma99- 2 followers

So it is interesting how just a couple days ago the models showed California being protected from the arctic air and now there is a strengthening of a high over the Atlantic, protecting the east coast. If this model holds, it is going to get bad. Probably upper 20s for some areas. Forecast lows are still 32-34 for most areas for central/northern ca but I wanted to put a warning out there just in case. I am going to start now with prep work to make sure all my stuff gets protected. Maybe it will push east or there will be some cloud cover to limit damage. Good news is January is coming soon when this crap starts pushing eastward.

Atmospheric river will blast California with heavy rain and snow ‘measured in feet’ By Angela Fritz January 3 at 2:45 PM A river of atmospheric moisture will flow over California through the weekend. (pivotalweather.com) California is getting the rain and snow it needs this week thanks to a shift in the weather, and the region’s meteorologists are finally calling it “normal” for winter on the West Coast. Through the weekend, up to two feet of water could rain down …

Houston, New Orleans, Jacksonville Climate
by Ed in Houston- 17 replies

The thread detailing Royal Palms growing in Jacksonville made me wonder how Jacksonville, New Orleans and Houston compared in their climates. There were a few Royals growing around Houston up until the cold spell of 2010 hit when Hobby Apt. recorded 21F. Comparing the climates using this resource, http://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/InteractiveMap.aspx showed the following average temps for the years of 1976-2005. Jacksonville Mayport Navel Station - 24.8F Jacksonville Downtown - 23.5F Jacksonville Craig Apt - 23.6F Jacksonville Royal palms off Goodby's Creek- 23.7F New Orleans near downtown - 25.5F Houston near downtown - 24.5F Houst…

Deciduous Trees in the South
by AnTonY- 2 replies

I've read through lots of discussions in another forum about how deciduous tree-heavy the South is compared to other subtropical regions. Just one of the many examples here: http://www.city-data.com/forum/weather/1789938-why-does-inland-us-south-look.html Such discussions inspired me to do my own research on the matter. As a result of such research, I am now coming to the conclusion that the presence of deciduous trees in the South has nothing to do with climate, but rather, is a result of geographic/geologic technicalities. For one, places in East Asia at similar latitudes to the South are entirely broad-leafed evergreen, even southern South Korea, which sees a…

PNW freeze
by Las Palmas Norte- 19 replies

Cold air has moved in to most areas of the PNW. Some folks got some snow two days ago, although none fell here. That's supposed to happen before the week is out, probably Thursday evening. Recorded a low of 27°F / -2.7°C early this morning. Forecasts are calling for colder overnight temps in the next while, somewhere around 20°F / -6°C Any other NW'ers shivering? Cheers, Barrie.

FLORIDA DROUGHT 1 2

It has been about 6 weeks since it last rained here. A long dry spell, even for Florida standards in fall. The forecast for the next 10 days - zero chance of rain. I have lived here a long time, and this is a long time to go without appreciable rainfall. We need some rain here badly yet long term says dry. I believe we may be in for some serious trouble if it doesn't begin raining soon.

Funny (not really) that just a couple weeks ago our highs and lows were 20°f warmer. Now our days are in the 60s and nights here down to the mid 40s. And rain. My palms don't know it is winter yet. I was out of town for a week. When I got back today I noticed growth on several of them. But I am sure that will change as soon as the cold rain accelerates the cooling of the soil. 2016 was fun while it lasted. As the garden gears down I will be working hard to prepare for next year along with Winter survival. All goes well over the winter I plan to... - Add SulPoMag to my palms in the next couple of weeks - Finish my irrigation system by moving h…
